Androcles, a runaway slave, takes shelter in a cave where he meets a lion with a thorn in its paw, which he removes. Androcles is later captured and sentenced to fight in the arena, where he is surprised to see the same lion, which remembers and refuses to attack him. The emperor hears their story and frees them both.

Augustus reigned from 27 BC to 14 AD and brought 40 years of peace and stability known as the Pax Romana by ending the civil wars. He transformed the declining Roman Republic into a more solid monarchy and ensured minimal expansion and peace for two centuries. Augustus also established an effective taxation system that increased Rome's revenue and relationship with its provinces. Additionally, he created the Vigiles Urbani firefighting and police force to maintain order and protect Rome.
Julius Caesar
Gaius Julius Caesar came from a prominent Roman family and was known from a young age for his speaking abilities and popularity. As a young man, he served as a priest but was stripped of his position due to his relation to Gaius Marius who was an enemy of Sulla. He joined the army and had a suspiciously long stay with the King of Bithynia before returning to Rome and making a name for himself in law and politics. His life and career continued to be impressive and controversial.
Marius and Sulla
Gaius Marius was a highly successful Roman general who held the consulship an unprecedented 7 times. However, his reforms granting citizenship and land to soldiers caused opposition. Meanwhile, Lucius Cornelius Sulla also rose to prominence as a general. A rivalry developed between the two that plunged Rome into civil war. Sulla eventually defeated Marius and his supporters, and established himself as dictator with broad powers, though he used brutal tactics like proscription lists against his enemies.
Participle Review
This document discusses participles in Latin grammar. It covers present active and perfect passive participles. Present active participles in Latin end in -ns, -ntis and modify nouns, like "vir currens." The case of the relative pronoun depends on its role in the relative clause, not the main clause.
Imperfect tense
The document provides a quick review of the imperfect tense in Latin. It explains that imperfect verbs will have "ba" in all conjugations except for irregular verbs like sum. Examples are given of the imperfect forms of cenare, pugnare, and spectare, along with their English translations using "was/were verbing," "used to verb," or "kept verbing." Practice with demonstratives

- 2. Once upon a time there was an old couple that lived in a little old house. They were named Baucis and Philemon.
- 3. One day while outside they came upon some travelers and let them in as guests into their old cottage.
- 4. They set up cushions and made some food for the travelers.
- 5. Something was unusual when the wine pitcher kept refilling and was always full. The old couple realized that the travelers we actually heavenly guests.
- 6. The old couple offered the gods a special duck but they refused and then they flooded the village and built a grand temple.
- 7. After the temple was finished the gods asked what the old couple would wish for. The old couple wished to be the priests and guardians of the temple and also that they could die together at the same moment. The gods granted this wish.
- 8. The couple grew even older together and later died beside one another and at the same moment passed away happily.
