Today we will review… Comparing Ordering Rounding Multiplying Dividing Estimating Word problems
What is a decimal? A decimal is a fractional number and is indicated by digits after a period which is called a decimal point.
COMPARING AND ORDERING Line up the decimals. Fill in the empty spaces with zeroes. Compare from the left.
Work these! 3.45 _____  .4591 .432 ;  .3128 ;  .4219 ; 1.2 .562 ; .2891 ; 2.34 ; 2.1
ROUNDING!!! Find the rounding place. Look to the right of the rounding place. If the number is five or greater, round up. If the number is less than five, your rounding place stays the same. Numbers behind the rounding place turn to zeroes in FRONT of the decimal. Numbers behind the rounding place fall into the water BEHIND the decimal
Work these! Round to the tenths:  3.2678 Round to the hundredths:  125.6728 Round to the ten thousandths:  2.387198
MULTIPLYING!!! Line up the numbers. Count the number of digits behind a decimal point Multiply the numbers like you would whole numbers Put the decimal at the end of the answer and move it the number of places you counted in step two.
Work these!!! 34.56  x  6.5 8.973 x 7.6
DIVISION!!! Move the decimal to the end of the outside number. Move the decimal the same number of places on the inside number. Put the decimal on the roof. Divide like you would with whole numbers. If you have a remainder, add zeroes behind the decimal and continue dividing.
Work these!!! Round Quotients to the nearest hundredths! 56.789  ÷ 4.5 2.3866 ÷ .73
ESTIMATION!!! Round to the highest place value!! Then work the problem!

A large cargo plane can carry 87.5 tons.  Tanks weighing 4.5 tons are being loaded onto it.  What is the maximum number of tanks it can carry?
