Private industry employers reported nearly 45,800 fewer nonfatal
workplace injury and illness cases in 2017 compared to a year earlier,
reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some 2.8 million nonfatal
workplace injuries and illnesses were reported in 2017, or 2.8 per full-time
equivalent worker. Only manufacturing and finance / insurance sectors
showed significant injury rate changes in 2017.

New OSHA Crane Operator Rule Now in Effect
OSHA issued a final rule that clarifies certification requirements for crane
operators. Under the final rule, employers are required to train,
certify/license and evaluate operators to safely perform crane activities.
Most requirements became effective on Dec. 9. Evaluation and
documentation requirements will become effective on Feb. 7, 2019.

59,000 Firefighters Injured in 2017
The NFPA estimates that on-duty firefighters suffered 58,835 injuries in
2017, a decrease of five percent from the previous year – and the lowest
number since NFPA began analyzing this data in 1981. Of these firefighter
injuries, 10,155 (17 percent) resulted in lost time from work. These are in
addition to the 60 firefighter deaths while on duty in 2017.

OSHA Launches Trenching Hazard Initiative in Southern States
OSHA area offices in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi, are reaching out to excavation employers,
industry associations, equipment rental organizations, water utility suppliers and plumbing companies to educate
them to identify trenching hazards. Compliance assistance specialists will also remind employers of requirements to
implement methods to prevent collapses. Learn more.
NIOSH Releases New Respirable Silica Monitoring Software
Mines can now monitor worker exposure to hazardous respirable crystalline silica more effectively with beta version
software developed by the NIOSH Mining Program. The "FAST" tool works with commercially available FTIR
analyzers to determine a worker’s exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust, providing detailed results
immediately following a worker’s shift. Learn more here.
PHMSA Issues New Plastic Piping Rule
The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration published a final rule on Nov. 20 that amends
regulations for plastic piping systems used in the transportation of natural or other gas. The updates allow for
expanded use of plastic pipe products and allow or require use of certain materials and practices. Effective date of
the amendments is January 22, 2019. Get details.
New NFPA Standard for Public Safety Drone Operations
NFPA 2400 is an all-encompassing standard that applies to all public safety departments that operate drones,
referred to as Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). The new standard underscores the need for an sUAS
coordinator and the importance of knowing airspace requirements, weather conditions, crew readiness benchmarks,
resource needs, incident command systems, regulatory requirements and communication strategies. Read more.
OSHA Proposes Revised Beryllium Standard for General Industry
OSHA has issued a proposed rule to revise the beryllium standard for general industry to clarify the standard and
simplify or improve compliance with the standard. The proposed rule would amend selected paragraphs of the
standard and replace Appendix A with Operations for Establishing Beryllium Work Areas. Comments on the
changes must be submitted by February 9. See more.
