This document provides a summary of a Bible presentation on death and what happens next. It discusses various views on death from dictionaries, churches and philosophers. The Bible presentation argues that the Bible depicts death as the permanent end of life functions and teaches that souls can die, in contrast to ideas of immortal souls from Greek philosophy. It asserts the first lie was that humans would not die if they ate forbidden fruit, and warns against traditions that make God's word ineffective.
Death and What Happens Next: the Bible's Honest AnswerDayan Boyce
There is a lot of speculation about what happens when we die. People have many ideas. Which ones are true? Does the bible tell us what other people say it tells us about death and the afterlife? This public bible presentation was given in London, Ontario and Hye, Texas in 2013 and 2014.
Dr. John Oakes taught a class on the commonly-held doctrine known as “Once Saved, Always Saved”, also known as Perseverance of the Saints. The class was taught in San Diego Nov. 6, 2014 at the Mission Center of Hope. The outline of the class was: I. Where did this doctrine come from? II. What proof-texts will the believer in this doctrine use? and III. What does the Bible teach on perseverance/falling away?
Dr. John Oakes taught a class titled Christianity in a Postmodern World at the 2013 ICEC at San Diego State University. He proposes a rational Christian response to both the good and the bad which comes with postmodern thinking. The class covers the history of modernism and why it was replaced by postmodernism, as well as a brief bio of the major influences in the movement as well as suggesting both the strengths and weaknesses of the postmodern mood.
The Apologetics Research Society, along with the South Florida Church of Christ put on a Christian Evidence weekend in Miami/Dade and Broward County, including at Florida International University Sept. 18-20, 2015. The audio and some of the power points and outlines are attached.
Dr. John Oakes is taught a class on Answering the Hard Questions at the 2015 International Christan Evidence Conference at York College in York, Nebraska, June 19-21. He gave a brief overview of the Christian world view before launching into the Christian answer to the questions both believers and non-believers often struggle with, such as the Trinity, the problem of evil, the problem of suffering, the problem of violence in the Old Testament and the problem of Hell. Notes and power point are here:

This document summarizes the key points made in a speech about the supposed immortality of the soul. It discusses that the idea of an immortal soul originated with ancient Egyptians and Greeks, not from the Bible. While some early Christian thinkers incorporated Platonic ideas of the immortal soul, the Bible depicts the soul as mortal and returning to dust at death. The Bible teaches of a future resurrection opposed to the immortal soul concept, and that ultimately all will be in God.

Ratzinger understanding of intermediate state of the soul by borgjie disturaborgjie distura
This document discusses Joseph Ratzinger's perspective on the intermediate state between death and resurrection. Ratzinger criticizes the idea of "resurrection in death" proposed by some theologians after Vatican II, arguing it does not do justice to the Church's teaching of bodily resurrection. He asserts the Thomistic understanding of the relationship between body and soul, informed by Christian faith, best resolves the issue. According to Ratzinger, the soul does not leave behind its relationship to the body after death, and bodily resurrection will occur on the last day.
Christian and Other World Views: A Power Point. A lesson on world views, including the Christian world view, and the world views of naturalism, postmodernism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jaina, Sikkhism, Confucianism and Islam. First taught by John Oakes in Manila 1/16/2010.
This is a presentation given by Dr. John Oakes in Hong Kong 1/11/2012. John acknowledges that, although all the notes and power point are his, many of the thoughts come from a similar presentation by Dr. Douglas Jacoby at the 2011 ARS Christian evidences conference. Christian Apologetics: Answering the Hard Questions: Notes and Power Pointevidenceforchristianity
Here are 3 key passages that show Jesus is fully God:
1. Jesus is called God. In Hebrews 1:8, God says to the Son, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever."
2. Jesus possesses the divine attributes. In John 1:1-3, Jesus is identified as the eternal Word who was with God in the beginning and through whom all things were created. This shows Jesus shares in God's divine nature and attributes.
3. Jesus claims full equality with God. In John 10:30, Jesus declares, "I and the Father are one." His Jewish opponents understood this as a claim to full deity, which is why they tried to stone Him for bl
The document discusses the concept of providence and its relationship to creation and preservation. Providence refers to God's control and direction of the world. It is described as personal, thoughtful, careful, universal, particular, effectual, and supernatural. The document also discusses views on whether God's providence is general or particular, and provides biblical support for the view that it is both general and particular. Finally, the document outlines several views on the "days" of creation in Genesis and theories on the origins of life.

This document discusses the relationship between science and religion, specifically Christianity. It makes three main points:
1) The development of science historically took place within the Christian West, and many early scientists were religious believers, including clergy.
2) Christianity provided the worldview foundations for science by positing a rational, orderly universe created by God to be understood by rational humans. Other religions did not generate a "full-birthed" science.
3) To reconcile the estrangement between science and Christianity, both communities need to re-examine their views - scientists should better understand Christianity's actual claims, while Christians should reject equating evolution with atheism. Without Christianity, there would be no history of
The document discusses three primary views on the origin of creation: materialism, pantheism, and theism. Materialism believes matter is eternal and there is no God. Pantheism sees God and creation as the same substance. Theism is the Judeo-Christian view that God created all things from nothing. The document also examines biblical support for creation, analyzing the origins of matter, living things, and humankind. It explores debates on the timespan of creation and compatibility with evolution.
Who Said Jesus is a Myth? A class by Brian Colon from 2012 ICEC at UCLAevidenceforchristianity
Brian Colon taught a class at the 2012 ICEC at UCLA refuting the oft-heard accusation that the Jesus of the New Testament is principally a myth. Brian both presents hard evidence for the reliability of the New Testament picture of Jesus and explains why the Jesus myth arguments are extremely weak.
The Resurrection of Jesus - A Miracle in One of Three WaysRobin Schumacher
The resurrection of Jesus is considered a miracle that can be explained in one of three ways: as a biological miracle, psychological miracle, or theological miracle. The biological and psychological explanations are seen as unlikely due to issues like Jesus' clear death by crucifixion, the empty tomb, and appearances to believers and skeptics. The theological miracle explanation of a divine resurrection aligns best with the historical evidence, including the core undisputed facts accepted by scholars, eyewitness testimony that transformed lives, and the foundation this provides for Christianity. Most rational evidence-based analyses find the theological miracle option to be the best supported.
A power point by Dr. John Beggs, professor at Indiana University for 2010 ICEC on his research in neuroscience and the philosophical and theological questions of the existence of the human soul.
The document provides an overview and outline of the book of Hebrews. It discusses the purpose of Hebrews, which was to encourage early Christians experiencing persecution. It examines key themes in Hebrews like the superiority of Jesus and exhortations to remain faithful. The document also explores the concept of predestination and whether believers can fall away from faith. It analyzes passages in Hebrews about falling away and God's assurances of salvation. Overall, the document summarizes the major topics and themes discussed in the book of Hebrews.

WCF Chapter 32 - The State of Men After Death, and the Resurrection of the Deadsandiferb
The document summarizes sections of the Westminster Confession of Faith regarding the state of men after death and the resurrection of the dead. It discusses that after death, souls immediately go to Heaven or Hell while awaiting the resurrection. On the last day, all people will be resurrected with their bodies, which will be changed but still connected to their souls. For believers, their bodies will be made perfect and glorious, while unbelievers will face eternal punishment. The document rejects ideas like purgatory that are not found in Scripture.
The document provides an overview of Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Christianity. It discusses key ideas such as:
- Stoicism emphasized rationalism and rejecting emotions. Stoics believed nature is governed by rational principles.
- Epicureanism believed in atomism and that death meant the cessation of existence. Epicureans sought to enjoy life and avoid pain through moderation.
- Christianity built upon Jewish foundations of monotheism and the idea that humans are created in God's image. It taught that evil came from disbelief and disobedience to God. Jesus emphasized internal transformation and loving one's enemies.
This document discusses what happens to both Christians and non-Christians at death based on biblical teachings. It states that when Christians die, their souls go immediately to be in God's presence while their bodies remain in the ground until resurrection. Non-Christians go to eternal punishment after death. The document also addresses what will happen on the day of resurrection when Jesus returns, stating that Christians will be raised with perfect, immortal bodies to be reunited with their souls for eternity.
This document provides a summary of a Sunday school session on sex, drugs, rock and roll, and moral relativism from the 1960s counterculture movement. It discusses Woodstock and the real truths behind it, then covers current news topics about church/state issues, euthanasia, and health care. Biblical perspectives are presented on the sovereignty of God over life and death, the sanctity of human life, and suffering. Guidelines for confronting death from a Christian viewpoint are also mentioned.
This document discusses Catholic teachings around death, the afterlife, and resurrection. Some key points:
- At death, the soul is separated from the body and awaits reunion with the glorified body. For those not fully purified, there is purgatory to undergo further purification.
- Jesus conquered death through his own death and resurrection. For Christians, physical death completes the "dying" to sin and incorporation with Christ for those who die in his grace.
- There will be a universal resurrection of the dead and the last judgment, where souls will receive eternal life in heaven or eternal damnation in hell based on their works.
- The resurrected body will be
The document discusses the distinction between eternity and time. It states that eternity cannot be defined as an endless extension of time, as time involves succession and measurable units, while eternity is immutable and non-sequential. It provides illustrations from philosophers and theologians to clarify this distinction, such as eternity being "the whole thing at once" rather than a gradual progression. The document emphasizes that as creatures of time, humans have difficulty comprehending eternity, but it is important to properly distinguish the two concepts.
The document discusses different definitions and perspectives on life and death from physiological, philosophical, and scriptural views. It then summarizes perspectives from the Bible on three types of resurrection: (1) the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (2) the resurrection of the just in the last day, and (3) the resurrection of the wicked who will be judged. The document also examines four facts or perspectives about death from scripture and discusses the Christian view of life after death according to Jesus' promise in the Bible.

Christians believe that after death, people go to one of three places: heaven, purgatory, or hell. Those who have lived good lives go to heaven, those with sins go to purgatory to work them off, and those who have lived bad lives or don't work off sins go to hell. The Bible describes heaven as a place without pain or suffering where God will look after people. Christians believe in life after death based on the story of Jesus, who was resurrected after dying. There is no scientific proof of an afterlife, but most religions involve beliefs about what happens after death.
The document discusses different views on religious pluralism and exclusivism. It argues that while religious pluralism says all religions can lead to God, exclusivism says only one true religion leads to salvation, and inclusivism says one religion is true but people of other faiths can still be saved. The document provides biblical quotes and examines arguments for why Christianity claims to be the exclusive path to God.
Residential Bible School: Apologetics & Basic BeliefsAlwyn Lau
The document discusses the basics of Christian apologetics and addresses common questions about God, Christianity, and Jesus. It covers topics like the existence of God based on design in the universe, the problem of evil, who Jesus claimed to be, evidence for the resurrection, and what happened on the cross. It also examines the temptations of Christ in the wilderness and common threads in how the devil distorts our identity, purpose, and means of finding meaning, peace, and protection.
The document discusses Catholic teachings on death, judgment, heaven, hell, and eternal life. It provides biblical support for the beliefs that:
1) Upon death, the soul is separated from the body and awaits reunion with the glorified body in the afterlife.
2) All people will face particular and general judgment after death, where they will receive eternal rewards or punishments.
3) The righteous will attain eternal life and communion with God in heaven, while those who reject God will face eternal damnation in hell.
The document discusses the spiritual world and its relationship to the physical world based on various religious and spiritual teachings. It provides three main points:
1) The spiritual world exists and coexists with the physical world, with humans having both a physical body and a spiritual self or soul.
2) God speaks through dreams, visions, and spiritual experiences rather than directly, as humanity has become too engrossed in the material world.
3) The purpose of life is to achieve mind-body perfection and conquer evil in both the spiritual and physical realms in order to receive blessings in the future.
This document discusses ancient Greek, Roman, Jewish, and Christian views on abortion. Some key points:
1. The ancient Greeks and Romans generally viewed the fetus as belonging to the father and permitted abortion for various reasons like concealing adultery or avoiding health risks. Their views were "indifferent to fetal and early life."
2. Jewish texts like Exodus prohibited harming a fetus. Early Christians unanimously condemned abortion as destroying God's creation and violating love for one's neighbor.
3. By the 4th century, abortion was clearly viewed as a sin by both Eastern and Western Christians for similar reasons. Debate continued on when the soul entered the body.
4. The concept of "quickening
The document discusses key Bible passages about death and what happens when people die. It argues that, contrary to popular belief, the dead are truly dead and do not go to heaven, hell or purgatory. When people die, their souls cease to exist and their bodies return to dust while their spirits return to God. Satan deceives people into thinking the dead are alive in order to pose as spirits himself. The only reliable information about death comes from the Bible, not mediums or those who claim to contact the dead. Ultimately, death will be destroyed forever when God resurrects the righteous dead and brings them into eternal life.
This document discusses end of life decisions from a Christian perspective. It outlines what the Bible says about death being natural and humanity's finite lifespan due to sin. It describes common ailments faced by the aged in Scripture. It advocates allowing God to be in control of the end of life rather than humans intervening through euthanasia or assisted suicide. The Christian view is to accept death as part of God's plan and take comfort in the resurrection through Christ's victory over death.
The document discusses the Christian doctrine of resurrection. It begins by defining resurrection as bringing back to life or raising from the dead. It then makes three key points:
1) Jesus was resurrected after dying, demonstrating God's power over death. His resurrected body was immortal.
2) All humankind will be resurrected, but the righteous and wicked will be resurrected at different times and not all will receive salvation.
3) The myth that souls go directly to heaven or hell upon death is not biblical. The document aims to dispel this myth and explain what the resurrection truly means according to the Bible.
The document discusses several Catholic teachings regarding life after death:
- Heaven is believed to be a place of paradise where God rules and souls go after being purified of sin.
- Hell is thought to be a place of punishment where souls who die without repenting for sins are sent.
- Purgatory is considered a temporary place for souls to be cleansed of venial sins before entering heaven.
- Belief in the immortality of the soul and resurrection of the body on Judgement Day are core Christian doctrines.

The document discusses several Christian doctrines related to life after death such as the immortal soul, heaven, hell, and purgatory. It analyzes the biblical support for each doctrine and concludes that:
1) The Bible teaches that humans are mortal and the soul can die. It does not support the idea of an immortal soul.
2) Hell is described as an eternal fire, but the Bible uses "eternal" to also mean something that has a beginning and an end. Hell fire will end after all sinners are destroyed.
3) Neither the Bible nor reason support the doctrine of purgatory or the idea of souls dwelling in heaven in an incorporeal state.

The document discusses how the French Revolution was precipitated by the centralization of wealth and power among the few, which led to vast inequality and oppression of the poorer classes. It draws parallels between the economic conditions prior to the French Revolution and trends in the late 19th/early 20th century of monopolization by wealthy corporations and unions, increasing the power of the few over the many and sowing the seeds of social unrest. Bible prophecies are presented as having foretold these events.
This document discusses how the French Revolution fulfilled Bible prophecy about the two witnesses being killed and lying dead for three and a half days in Revelation 11. It provides historical context about France banning the Bible in 1793 and the reign of terror that followed. During this time, atheism and licentiousness spread as the testimony of God's witnesses was silenced. However, the Bible was then tolerated again in France after three and a half years, just as the prophecy foretold. The document examines various events of the French Revolution through the lens of different Bible prophecies.
This document discusses biblical prophecies related to the two witnesses and the beast from the bottomless pit. It suggests that the two witnesses represent the Old and New Testaments, and that their 1,260 day prophecy period ended in 1798. At this time, the papal power fulfilled the role of the beast from the bottomless pit by oppressing the Scriptures. The document explores various biblical passages to support identifying the papacy with the beast from the bottomless pit and linking its rise to divine judgment for not accepting biblical truth.
The document discusses several Bible passages from Ezekiel that describe Ezekiel's vision of God's likeness appearing as fire from the waist down and brightness from the waist up. It provides the text of these passages from several Bible translations. It also includes commentary distinguishing between the literal translation and other translations that use terms like "figure" or "form" instead of "likeness".
The church in Laodicea was complacent and thought they needed nothing, but Jesus saw they were wretched, poor, blind, and naked. Jesus calls on them to buy from him true treasure, righteousness, and knowledge through repentance. He stands at the door and knocks, hoping they will hear his call to turn away from their self-deluded ways and toward him in zealous faith.
The document discusses the four compartments of the Hebrew sanctuary: 1) the encampment, 2) the courtyard, 3) the holy place, and 4) the most holy place or ark of the covenant. It provides descriptions of each area from Bible passages and explains their symbolism, such as the courtyard representing reconciliation between God and man. Personal applications are given, like how the seven golden candlesticks represent how Christians should shine forth Christ's light. The overall message is about sanctification and glorification through understanding Jesus' work in the heavenly sanctuary.
The document discusses the importance of health and following the eight natural laws for physical and spiritual well-being. It notes that poor health habits like lack of exercise, poor diet, and substance abuse can lead to disease and death, just as breaking moral laws can lead to spiritual death. Committing fully to obeying God's health laws is necessary to receive blessings of health, as it is to obey His moral laws and receive salvation. Health reform is meant to prepare God's people for translation and the time of trouble.
Lord Palmerston, the premier of England, was petitioned by Scottish clergy to appoint a day of prayer and fasting to prevent a cholera outbreak. However, Lord Palmerston replied that the clergy should focus on sanitation measures like cleaning streets and houses, promoting public health, and ensuring good nutrition for the poor. These preventive measures, he argued, would eliminate the need for fasting and prayer, as God would not listen to prayers when basic preventive steps were ignored.
Cholesterol can come from both exogenous (dietary) and endogenous (produced by the liver) sources. Dietary cholesterol is found in foods like eggs and animal fats, while the liver produces cholesterol endogenously. Oxidized cholesterol is especially harmful and can damage blood vessels. High levels of homocysteine in the blood can also damage blood vessels and increase heart disease risk. Homocysteine levels are affected by nutrients like folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. Caffeine intake should be limited as it can raise blood pressure and homocysteine.
The document discusses the biblical parable of the ten virgins from Matthew 25:1-13. It provides commentary on various aspects of the parable from the writings of Ellen White. Key points include:
- The parable applies to Adventists in the last days as they await Christ's second coming.
- The lamps represent the Word of God, while the oil represents the Holy Spirit.
- The wise virgins study the scriptures intensely and receive the Holy Spirit, while the foolish neglect studying the Bible and do not receive the Holy Spirit.
- At the midnight cry, when Christ returns, the foolish virgins realize they are unprepared without the Holy Spirit.
The document discusses the effects of sugar consumption on health. It notes that sugar intake has risen significantly since the 1900s with the advent of food processing. Several studies are cited showing links between higher sugar intake and adverse health outcomes like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. High blood sugar is noted to aid cancer growth by providing extra energy for cancer cells, increasing insulin and acidity, and impairing the immune system. Maintaining a diet low in added sugars and refined carbohydrates is recommended for optimal health.
William Miller was a Baptist preacher who, through intensive study of the Bible, concluded that Jesus Christ would return to earth between 1843 and 1844. He began preaching this and gained many followers known as Millerites. When Christ did not return on the predicted dates, it caused the Great Disappointment and the Millerite movement dissolved. Some Millerites went on to form the Seventh Day Adventist Church, believing in the imminent second coming of Christ and observance of the Sabbath on Saturday. Ellen White emerged as an influential leader through her prophetic visions which helped shape Seventh Day Adventist beliefs and practices around health, education, and missions.
The document provides information about the ten plagues of Egypt in Exodus and compares them to the seven last plagues described in Revelation. It summarizes key points about the plagues, including who or what was affected by each plague, biblical references, and short explanations. It also addresses questions about God's mercy during the plagues, who will be protected, and the need to prepare one's heart before Christ's return.
Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and the ability of cells to invade other tissues. Normal cells grow and divide in an orderly way, while cancer cells continue growing and dividing instead of dying. Cancer develops due to damaged DNA that is not repaired. Lifestyle factors like tobacco use, pollution, diet, obesity, and ultraviolet radiation exposure can damage DNA and increase cancer risk. Antioxidants from fruits and vegetables help neutralize free radicals that damage cells. Exercise, nutrition, and staying at a healthy weight can help prevent cancer development. Cancer treatments include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, but prevention through lifestyle is most effective.
This document discusses the health benefits of a plant-based diet and the risks associated with animal product consumption. It provides several studies that show vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Cancer risks are higher with diets high in fat, meat and dairy. Plant foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes contain antioxidants and other beneficial compounds that protect against disease initiation and promotion.
This document discusses Ellen White's warnings about the "alpha" and "omega" of dangers facing the faith, with the "alpha" being represented by Dr. Kellogg's book Living Temple and theories in 1904. She warned that a "omega" would follow with a more startling nature. It provides historical context for Kellogg promoting pantheistic views and unsound policies, with White providing counsel and warnings. The nature of Christ and sin are also discussed, with the importance of not departing from the faith or teachings of the Bible.
The document summarizes the fulfillment of the 6th trumpet judgment as described in Revelation 9:13-19. It describes how in 1449 the Ottoman Empire gained control of Constantinople, marking the end of the 150 years of torment on the Greeks and the loosing of the four angels. The four angels represented the four principal sultanates of the Ottoman Empire located along the Euphrates River that were previously restrained but became unleashed to conquer the territories of the Eastern Roman Empire. The document provides historical context and quotes from sources identifying the armies of the Ottoman Empire under Mehmed II that conquered Constantinople in 1453, fulfilling the prophecy.
The document summarizes the fulfillment of the 7 trumpets, focusing on the 5th trumpet. It describes how the fall of the Persian king Chosroes opened the way for the rise of Islam under Muhammad. After Chosroes' defeat, there was anarchy in Persia for 8 years, allowing the Arabian caliphs to conquer Persia. It then discusses how the invading Islamic armies that arose from the "bottomless pit" or wilderness of Arabia had power like scorpions for 150 "prophetic years" to torment the Roman-Byzantine world from the 7th-13th centuries AD. Their cavalry armies spread rapidly like locusts or horsemen prepared for battle, darkening
The document discusses the events surrounding the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD and the rise of papal power that followed. It provides historical context on:
1) Odoacer deposing the last Western Roman emperor in 476 AD, traditionally marking the end of the Western Roman Empire. This created a power vacuum and divided the territory among 10 kingdoms.
2) The conversion of Clovis, King of the Franks, to Catholicism in 496 AD. This alliance between the Franks and the Catholic Church supported the rise of papal authority.
3) The removal of 3 Arian kingdoms - the Heruli in 493 AD, the Vandals in 534 AD,

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

Hymns 51, 142, 158a
2. Death, and
What Happens Next
A public Bible presentation
London, Ontario

3. Where Is The Answer?
• Our own feelings or intuition?
• Anybody else’s feelings or intuition?
• The views of religious leaders, councils, synods?
• How do we know if we/they are right?
• Authority: the Bible!
4. Death, and What Happens Next
• Death
• The common idea(s)
• The word itself
• The nature of human life
• How and why death happens
• What next
• The concept of the soul
• The first and worst lie
• The Bible description of life
after death
• The true hope of the Bible
6. Death: What the Churches Teach
• "the separation of man from God ... As spiritual life is conscious existence
in communion with God, so spiritual 'death' is conscious existence in
separation from God." (Vine's Expository Dictionary of the New Testament)
• "Death is separation. A physical death is the separation of the soul from the
body. Spiritual death, which is of greater significance, is the separation of
the soul from God." (S. Michael Houdmann, gotquestions.org)
• "Spiritual death is separation from God. The scriptures teach of two
sources of spiritual death. The first source is the Fall, and the second is our
own disobedience. ... During our life on the earth, we are separated from
God's presence. Through the Atonement, Jesus Christ redeems everyone
from this spiritual death." (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
www.lds.org)
7. Death: What the Churches teach
• "In truth, however, the concept of death as used in the Bible does not
mean nonexistence; rather, it means 'separation.' ... the biblical
picture of death revolves around the concept of separation, rather
than nonexistence." (Kyle Butt, Apologetics Press)
• "For those who die in Christ, death is union with the Lord. ... death
will be an absolutely thrilling experience!" (Wayne Jackson, Christian
Courier)
8. However…
• "Death may be simply defined as the termination of life. ... It is the
dissolution of 'our earthly house of this tabernacle' (2 Corinthians 5:1)
... The grave is represented as 'the gates of death' ... Death is the
effect of sin (Hebrews 2:14), and not a 'debt of nature.' It is but once
(9:27), universal (Genesis 3:19), necessary (Luke 2:28-30)."
(M.G. Easton, Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Third Edition, published by
Thomas Nelson, 1897.)
9. However…
• "Unlike the Greeks, who largely understood a person as a soul entrapped in a body, the
ancient Hebrews depicted the person as a psychosomatic (body-soul) unity. When this
body-soul union failed in death, the Hebrews did not visualize the escape of the soul
from the body, but the actual death of the self. ... The New Testament assumed the Old
Testament concept of body-soul unity and the late Old Testament and intertestamental
concept of resurrection. Unlike Greek philosophers who downplayed the significance of
death by emphasizing the immortality of the soul, the biblical writers affirmed that death
is real. ... The doctrine of resurrection is an affirmation that even the realm of the dead
belongs to God and that death is overcome only at His gracious command."
(Butler, Trent C., Holman Bible Dictionary, published by Broadman & Holman, 1991.)
10. Death: What the original words mean
• Hebrew = ‘muwth’ (Strongs # H4191)
• Greek = ‘thanatos’ (Strong’s # G2288)
• Both mean identically the same thing as the English word ‘death.’
• Permanent end of life
• Complete cessation of all vital functions
• Destruction, termination
• Both have specific literal reference to the body
• Sometimes used figuratively: conclusion, exclusion, darkness, vanity,
meaninglessness, hopelessness, worthlessness, indifference
11. What the Bible says
• How human life began (how man was made):
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living
soul." (Genesis 2:7)
• "soul" = animals too! Anything that breathes.
• Translated "living being" (NIV, RSV, NASB, HCSB, )
• Translated "living person" (NLT); "living creature" (NEB, YLT)
• KJV translates the same term "living creature" (Gen. 1:21, 24)
12. What the Bible says
Process and result:
• "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat
of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."
(Genesis 2:17)
• Literally: ‘dying thou shalt die’ (Hebrew)
• Dying = process = mortality, corruption, sinfulness in nature
• Die = end result = complete cessation of all vital functions, total end
of existence, permanent dissolution of being
13. What the Bible says
Death is the reverse of creation:
• "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto
the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto
dust shalt thou return." (Genesis 3:19)
• "Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their
breath, they die, and return to their dust." (Psalm 104:29)
• "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his
thoughts perish." (Psalm 146:4)
17. Everything the Bible says
about immortal souls…
. . . . .
• "Immortal" occurs only once – refers to the Father (1 Timothy 1:17)
• "Immortality" something only God has (1 Tim. 6:16), something to
"seek for" (Romans 2:7), something to "put on" at a future
resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:50-54)
• Never with the words "soul" or "spirit" or in connection with man.
18. Where did it come from?
• Vine’s Complete Expository
Dictionary of Old and New
Testament Words –
"The Hebrew system of thought
does not include the
combination or opposition of
the ‘body’ and ‘soul’ which are
really Greek and Latin in origin"
• Jewish Encyclopedia –
"The belief that the soul
continues its existence after the
dissolution of the body is…
nowhere expressly taught in
Holy Scripture… The belief in the
immortality of the soul came to
Jews from contact with Greek
thought and chiefly through the
philosophy of Plato"
19. Where did it come from?
• Plato (428-348 B.C.) – Phaedo
• "Be of good cheer and do not lament my passing… When you lay me down in my grave, say
that you are burying my body only, and not my soul"
• "Death is merely the separation of the soul and body"
• Soul is immortal and indestructible
• Immortal soul, once freed from the body, rewarded for good deeds or punished for evil
• Tertullian (155-220 A.D.) – "I may use the opinion of Plato, when he declares
‘Every soul is immortal.’ "
• Origen (185-254) – Admirer of Plato and believed in immortality of soul
• Augustine (354-430) – "fused the religion of the New Testament with the Platonic
tradition of Greek philosophy" (Encyclopaedia Brittanica).
• Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) – soul is a conscious intellect, cannot be destroyed
20. What the Bible says
• Souls are mortal, subject to death & destruction, from which they can be saved or
delivered.
• "The soul that sinneth, it shall die" (Ezekiel 18:4)
• "Deliver my soul from the sword" (Psalm 22:20)
• "None can keep alive his own soul" (Psalm 22:29)
• "If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the King of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live"
(Jeremiah 38:17)
• "Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly
destroyed, and all the souls that were therein" (Joshua 10:28 – also 30, 32, 35, 37, 39)
• "And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed
etc…" (Acts 3:23)
• "Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul
from death" (James 5:20)
• "every living soul died in the sea" (Revelation 16:3)
• Also Job 7:15; Psalm 78:50; Isaiah 55:3; Ezekiel 3:19; Matthew 10:28
21. What the Bible says
• "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after
the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after
Christ" (Colossians 2:8)
• "making the word of God of none effect through your tradition"
(Mark 7:13)
• "The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine… They shall
turn away their ears from the Truth, and be turned unto fables"
(2 Timothy 4:3-4)
• "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except
there be a falling away first… And for this cause shall God send them
strong delusion, that they should believe a lie"
(2 Thessalonians 2:3-11)
22. The first and worst lie!
• "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not
surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat
thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall
be as gods, knowing good and evil."
(Genesis 3:4-5)
• Hebrew: ‘dying you shall not die’
23. The first and worst lie!
• "In essence, the moment we die, our spirit and soul go to be with the
Lord. … After their physical death, believers gain eternal life. … The
dead body appears to be asleep when it is separated at death from
the spirit and soul of the believer. The spirit and soul, which are
eternal, are united with Christ at the moment of the believer's death"
(Mary Fairchild, christianity.about.com)
• "We see ourselves quietly closing our eyes with a look of peace on
our face and our lips curled in a half smile. Then our serenely closed
eyes are filled with the radiance of a white light … as we effortlessly
float on a stream of light leading us into the heavenly realm." (Clifford
James, www.theearlychurch.com)
24. The first and worst lie!
• "No, the soul does not cease to exist after death. … we continue on
after death." (Matt Slick, Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry)
• "Every human being enters the world possessed with endless
existence. … Since the soul of man never dies, then we may say that
the dead are alive. … The death of the body is the gateway into a
fuller and larger life into which the soul passes. … No man is ever
dead when his body lies dead! … When we move out of this
tabernacle, the real man will leave the body and enter into the
presence of the Lord." (Lehman Strauss, bible.org)
25. What the Bible says
• Man is mortal:
• "mortal man" (Job 4:17)
• "this mortal" (1 Corinthians 15:53-54)
• "our mortal flesh" (2 Cor. 4:11)
• "your mortal body" (Romans 6:12)
• "your mortal bodies" (Rom. 8:11)
26. What the Bible says
• Man’s life is nothing:
• "Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. He cometh forth like
a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not."
(Job 14:1-2)
• "For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh
not again." (Psalm 78:39)
• "he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of
the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place
thereof shall know it no more." (Psa. 103:14-16)
• "Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away." (Psa. 144:4)
• "For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then
vanisheth away." (James 4:14)
• "All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than
nothing, and vanity." (Isaiah 40:17)
• "And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing" (Daniel 4:35)
27. What the Bible says
• The intelligent, thinking, feeling part of man does not live beyond the
death of the body:
• "For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee
thanks?" (Psalm 6:5)
• "The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence."
(Psa. 115:17)
• "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts
perish." (Psa. 146:4)
• "They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore
hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish."
(Isaiah 26:14)
• "For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down
into the pit cannot hope for thy truth." (Isa. 38:18)
28. What the Bible says
• The intelligent, thinking, feeling part of man does not live beyond the
death of the body:
• "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing,
neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished"
…
"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no
work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou
goest." (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6, 10)
29. What about heaven and hell?
• Heaven is the exclusive dwelling place of God the Father, and for the
time being, Jesus Christ
• Jesus will return from heaven to earth to reward those whom he
judges to be his faithful followers; nobody will be rewarded in heaven
• Hell is a bad translation – 'grave' is better; 'hidden place' is literal
• There is no such place as a subterranean lair of evil
• There is no such thing as eternal fiery torment; death is the
punishment for sin
30. What the Bible says
• The wicked will perish:
• "But the wicked shall perish" (Psalm 37:20)
• "so let the wicked perish at the presence of God" (Psa. 68:2)
• "For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish" (Psa. 73:27)
• "he that speaketh lies shall perish" (Proverbs 19:9)
• "By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed"
(Job 4:9)
• "All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust" (Job 34:15)
• "they that strive with thee shall perish" (Isaiah 41:11)
• "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3)
• "Thy money perish with thee" (Acts 8:20)
• "For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law" (Romans 2:12)
• "And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish" (2 Thessalonians 2:10)
• "shall utterly perish in their own corruption" (2 Peter 2:12)
31. What the Bible says
• "whosoever believeth in him should not perish" (John 3:16)
Logically then, whosoever does not believe in him will perish.
• "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth
not is condemned already" (John 3:18 - two verses later!)
• "he that believeth not the Son shall not see life" (John 3:36)
• "He that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark 16:16)
32. The condemnation
• "They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not
rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all
their memory to perish." (Isaiah 26:14)
• "Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen
him shall say, Where is he? He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not
be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night."
(Job 20:7-8)
33. Is there no hope for humankind?
• For most, no:
"I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that
God might manifest them, and that they might see that they
themselves are beasts. For that which befalleth the sons of men
befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so
dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no
preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all
are of the dust, and all turn to dust again."
(Ecclesiastes 3:18-20)
34. Is there no hope for humankind?
• What makes the difference:
"Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and
their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their
own names. Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like
the beasts that perish. ... For when he dieth he shall carry nothing
away: his glory shall not descend after him. ... Man that is in honour,
and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish."
(Psalm 49:11-12, 17, 20)
• "Understandeth not" what???

resurrection of damnation." (John 5:28-29)

the abundance of peace." (Psalm 37:9-11)
38. The true Bible hope
• "Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit
the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit
incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all
sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall
sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we
shall be changed."

42. Summary
• Only in the Bible can we find the truth about life and death.
• When our breath is taken away, we return to dust; we know nothing,
our thoughts and feelings perish, our personality is gone, we cease to
exist.
• No part of us survives death; nothing exists after death.
• Bible's message clear: there is eternal life, salvation from death, for
those who believe the truth about Christ and obey his commands
• Our only hope is resurrection and glorification when Jesus returns.
