This document discusses Catholic teachings around death, the afterlife, and resurrection. Some key points: - At death, the soul is separated from the body and awaits reunion with the glorified body. dead] in the clouds to meet the
Lord" (Cf. 1 Cor 15:51).

9. Jesus’ own death “has transformed the curse
of death into a blessing” (CCC 1009;
Rom.5:19-20).
He conquered death and opened the
possibility of salvation for all (CCC 1019);

10. An end to the earthly life.
To a Christian, death has a positive
meaning:
•“For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
(Phil 1:21).
•Through Baptism, we die with Christ,
Sacramentally, in order to live a new life.
•If we die in Christ’s grace, physical death
completes this “dying”, - incorporating us
eternally with him;

19. Purgatory is defined as a state of
being, the continuing process of
purgation or purification of the
soul after human death.
For those who when they die are
guilty of less serious sin [venial
sin], where they will undergo
purification.
Purgatory is a sign of God's mercy
on those who have honestly sought
to know God and to do His will in
this life and yet die in some degree
of bondage to sin or the effects of
sin.

dead are unnecessary in

state of eternal damnation

31. CCC 1035 - The teaching of the Church affirms
the existence of hell and its eternity.
Immediately after death the souls of those
who die in a state of mortal sin descend into
hell, where they suffer the punishments of
hell, "eternal fire.“ The chief punishment of
hell is eternal separation from God, in whom
alone man can possess the life and happiness
for which he was created and for which he
longs.

32. CCC 1037 - God predestines no one to go to
hell; for this, a wilful turning away from God (a
mortal sin) is necessary, and persistence in it
until the end. In the Eucharistic liturgy and in
the daily prayers of her faithful, the Church
implores the mercy of God, who does not want
"any to perish, but all to come to repentance"

these resurrected bodies as having the
characterics of ;
• Identity;
• Entirety; ( body with a dominant soul);
• Immortality . (eternal)
• These characteristics will also be present in bodies of souls
condemned in hell.

for suffering the eternal punishment of hell, but not the
glorification of the Lord shared by those in Heaven.

“transcentdent qualities”;
• Impassibility; ( freedom from physical evil,
death, sickness and pain)
• Clarity; ( freedom from defects and
endowment with beauty and radiance);

• Subtility; (body is completely spiritualised
under the dominion of the soul)

51. • The Bible tells us, “But I say unto you, That every idle
word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof
in the day of judgment." (Matthew 12:32-36);
• The Bible says: “For there is nothing covered that shall
not be revealed: nor hidden that shall not be known. For
whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness shall be
published in the light: and that which you have spoken in
the ear in the chambers shall be preached on the
housetops.” [Luke 12:2-3]
• "The dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are
alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in
the clouds to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thes 4:16-17). This
is what some call "The Rapture".

58. GLORIFIED BODY
The dead shall rise and those souls who have
died will be united again to their bodies. All
will have a glorious, transformed, spiritualized
body as St. Paul said, "He will give a new form
to this lowly body of ours and remake it
according to the pattern of His glorified
body..." (Phil 3:21).

59. Sacred Scripture and Catholic theology teaches
that our glorified resurrected bodies will
experience four properties as an outflow of
the beatified soul enjoying the vision of God’s
essence:
1) Impassibility – the glorified body will no
longer suffer physical sickness or death, as
Saint Paul teaches regarding the glorified body
in 1 Corinthians 15:42, “It is sown in
corruption, it shall rise in incorruption.”

60. 2) Subtlety meaning that we will have a
spiritualized nature in the sense of a spiritual
body as did our Lord as we learn at 1
Corinthians 15:44: “It is sown a corruptible
body, it shall rise a spiritual,” i.e. a spirit-like,
“body.” We see that Christ’s glorified body
was able to pass through closed doors.

61. 3) Agility – the glorified body will obey the soul
with the greatest ease and speed of movement
as we read in 1 Corinthians 15:43: “It is sown
in weakness, it shall rise in power,” that is,
according to a gloss, “mobile and living.” Saint
Thomas Aquinas says, “But mobility can only
signify agility in movement. Therefore the
glorified bodies will be agile.” We discern
agility our Resurrected Lord’s ability to
bilocate and travel great distances in an
instant.

62. 4) Clarity – the glorified body will be free from
any deformity and will be filled with beauty
and radiance as we read at Matthew 13:43:
“The just shall shine as the sun in the kingdom
of their Father,” and Wisdom 3:7: “The just
shall shine, and shall run to and fro like sparks
among the reeds.” Here clarity refers not being
“clear” but to being “bright.”

63. St. Thomas Aquinas at Summa Contra Gentiles, IV,
86 summarized: “thus also will his body be raised to
the characteristics of heavenly bodies — it will be
lightsome (clarity), incapable of suffering
(impassible), without difficulty and labor in
movement (agility), and most perfectly perfected by
its form (subtlety). For this reason, the Apostle
speaks of the bodies of the risen as heavenly,
referring not to their nature, but to their glory.”
It is worth noting that the Virgin Mary has already
received her glorified and resurrected body. Hence,
she has the four gifts of the resurrection.

64. "Are you saved?" asks the
Fundamentalist.
The Catholic should reply: "As the Bible
says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph.
2:5–8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor.
1:18, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the
hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1
Cor. 3:12–15). Like the apostle Paul I am
working out my salvation in fear and
trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful
confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom.
5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11–13)."
