A large-scale study was carried out to assess the benefits of a new drug for preventing fractured necks of femur in post-menopausal women with osteoporosis. The study used a treatment group that received the drug and a control group that did not. It reliably measured the number of women who sustained fractures in each group. The results showed that 400 women would need to receive the new drug to prevent one new fracture.
