“Debbie Corbett simply can’t contain all that inspiration in a regular-sized
cranium. It’s just not possible. So, once again, she used her gargantuan
creative resources to come up with a brilliant solution: Texas-sized hair! It
disguises her oversized, idea-laden head so effectively, she hardly stands out
at all! But there’s no hiding the fact that she’s a truly standout talent.”

Art Director l Designer l Keeper of The Budgets
Building my client roster from zero to a dozen or so took...well, nothin’. Just
being me and doing my thing has seemed to work just fine. Okay, referral, referral,
referral is actually the way it’s really worked. Small and start-up business design
jobs aren’t always glamourous, but there’s nothing better than making people
happy and watching their business grow. Hearing “I love it!” and being able to
stick within a small budget is almost as great as having birthday cake for lunch
every day. Now I’m ready to get back to the challenges and excitement of the
profession I love. Working with people who are as creative as I am and not having
to resort to conversations with my dogs is just an added bonus.

I’m a big believer in brainstorming. But with a massive workload and tight
deadlines, that was not always an option. When it came to Brand Development,
a five-minute briefing was sometimes all the creative side could squeeze out of the
account service side of the agency. Having an over-sized cranium, being able to
put myself in the shoes of the target demographic, and listening to what the clients
wanted was all I needed help develop award-winning campaigns. (Keeping my
magic wand handy was very effective too.) My years with Freed also gave me the
chance to enhance my ability to organize photo shoots. Acquiring bids from
photographers, choosing models, gathering props and wardrobes, and providing
craft services out of the back of my ‘94 Explorer seemed to take less effort than
deciding what to wear every morning. One of my proudest moments was a
45-minute photo shoot with a former Houston Texan, his wife, and two young
sons which included shots from four locations at a water park, two wardrobe
changes, and one diaper change.

Awww...The Houston Post, what a sad day it was when they came in and said
“You have 30 minutes to pack your things and leave the building!” But, in my
workhorse fashion, I had to finish the job I was working on first. Come to find
out they really weren’t joking, but I still wasn’t taking a chance on missing a dead-
line. During my employment at The Houston Post, I really learned how to deal
with stressful situations and still smile. Executives popping in at 5:30 to say they
wanted a whole new campaign on their desk in the morning while walking out the
door to some posh event was pretty normal. (Say cheese!) Being thrown onto a
computer for the first time in my life without any formal training could have been
another source of stress. But I considered it an opportunity to grow and welcomed
the challenge, or maybe someone was just slipping something into my iced tea to
keep me calm and eager to please. And since newspapers are known for being...
frugal, sending files out-of-house for film output and pre-press work was not one
of our luxuries. Needless to say, I’m very meticulous about file make-ready which
has saved myself, clients, former employers, and printers a lot of time and money
on file correction, additional film output, and multiple proofs.
IN THE BEGINNING...
GOD CREATED TOP RAMEN NOODLES.
T h e A r t I n s t i t u t e o f H o u s t o n
Associates Degree l Advertising Design
Even though I attended The Art Institute of Houston when non-repro blue pens,
frisket, and amberlith were in use, I was still able to sharpen my now-spectacled
creative eye and learn the difference between kerning and leading, CMYK and RGB,
balanced and unbalanced, f-stop and shutter speed. Illustration was one of my
favorite classes, and after two years of multi-colored sneezes and walking around
with black smudges on my face because nobody would tell me, I now know what
part of a nude model I do and don’t have to get too detailed with. Staying awake
during Art History slide shows was another skill I mastered, as well as how to live
on a budget of $50 a week and still put 10% into savings.
