Day 1 ASSURE
Analyze Learners
This unit will be taught to a 10th grade Honors biology class that is overloaded with 30
students. There are 20 girls and 10 boys in the class. There are no cognitive/behavioral
IEPs, three of the students are diagnosed with ADD. Although this is a relatively
homogenous honors class, the students still have greatly diverse learning styles.
State Objective
The students will demonstrate an understanding of organelle function after a brief review
of the unit. They will describe the interdisciplinary implications of the invention of the
microscope. Students will show proficiency in cellular respiration after completing a
WebQuest and short quiz on the subject. They will complete this quiz with 100% accuracy.
Finally students will demonstrate their ability to respect one another and use logical
arguments as they add their input on a scientific controversy.
Select Methods, Media and Material
-YouTube/PowToon original animation
-Digital imaging: Robert Hooke
-WebQuest on cellular respiration
-Class Facebook page
Utilize Media and Material
-Students will review a previous unit on organelle functions with YouTube/PowToon
original animation
-Facilitated by a Photoshop image of Robert Hooke, we will have a class discussion on the
origin of the microscope and it’s place in scientific discovery
-Students will dig into cellular respiration with use of a WebQuest
-For homework students will comment on news video about some controversial
mitochondria on the class Facebook page
Require Learner Participation
-The class will start with an adventure through the cell where students will have to know
the function of certain organelles. The YouTube/PowToon video is an original animation.
-Facilitated by a Photoshop image of Robert Hooke, we will have a class discussion on the
origin of the microscope and it’s place in scientific discovery. We will cover the topics of the
first cell, challenges to discovery and modern microscopes.
-Students will dig into cellular respiration with use of a WebQuest, where they are chosen
to participate on a magic school bus ride with Miss Frizzle. The students must master
cellular respiration before setting off on the bus. They will be assessed by a quiz at the end
of the WebQuest.
-Recently, scientists have been able to combine DNA from 3 individuals in order to create a
baby. This is done in cases where genetic mitochondrial diseases would adversely affect the
baby. IS this ethical? For homework students will comment on news video about this topic
on the class Facebook page
Evaluate and Revise
-Depending on how well the students remember organelle functions, I may have to spend
some time reviewing those before moving on
-The WebQuest may take longer than the time allotted, if so then students will have to
complete the rest for homework
-The comments on the Facebook video could some from a place of deep personal belief, so
students will have to exercise respect for one another
