13. SKILLS GAPS
Blog – Digital Skills and Labor Shortages are the #1 issue facing Businesses
Canadian businesses are struggling to find workers with digital skills as the pandemic continues to
accelerate technology adoption and automation, a new survey has found.
The KPMG business outlook poll released on Aug. 31 found the inability to find and retain talent was
identified as the No. 1 threat to the growth prospects of businesses across the country.
Nearly 80 per cent of businesses polled said the pandemic changed the way they work, and they now
need more workers with IT skills.

16. HOW TO ADDRESS PRODUCTIVITY
ISSUES
• The federal government needs to re-think it’s job cluster approach to innovation. There needs to better support for small to
medium-size businesses as part of supporting taking ideas from incubation to market. This means all post-secondary schools
should be incubation centers.
• Canada has struggle with productivity issues for better part of 30 years. More needs to be done to address areas like tax and
regulatory reforms or building of resilient supply chain within Canada or addressing issues with innovations or better
programs/policies that support the circular economy or addressing the skills gaps or changes to capital cost allowances.
• All levels of government need to work together as part of protecting the environment as part of growing the economy in a
sustainable way.

17. CYBERSECURITY THREATS
Despite the increased threat of cyber-attacks during the pandemic, almost half (47%) of Canadian small businesses
surveyed say they do not allocate any portion of their annual operating budget to cyber security. This marks an
increase of 14% from 2019, when one-third (33%) said they do not allocate any budget to cyber security, according
to a new Leger survey, commissioned by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC).
In 2021, 41% of small businesses that ever suffered a cyber-attack reported that it cost them at least $100,000, up
from 37% in 2019. However, fewer than half of the businesses surveyed (46%) said they have implemented defenses
against possible cyber-attacks, and only a quarter (24%) say they plan to purchase cyber insurance within the next
year.

19. CYBERSECURITY
The new challenges
facing Canada's small businesses.pdf
Cyber security concerns are rising to the top of business risks as ranked by Canadian small business
owners, according to a new survey commissioned by RBC.
The RBC 2021 Cyber Security Poll shows that nearly half of Canada’s small business owners report that
they anticipate becoming a victim of a cybercrime in the next 12 months – a percentage significantly
higher than seen among the general population (34 per cent). Forty per cent of small businesses identified
that having devices infected by a virus or malware is now perceived as their biggest threat, ranking higher
than falling victim to an online scam or fraud (24 per cent), or property damage (24 per cent).
