3. Davitamon brand was founded in 1928 at the factory
of Organon in Oss. The Davitamon brand name
originates from the following: Vitamin AD (That
became DA) VITA means life, ON comes from
"Organon", the company that developed Davitamon.
The first products introduced were Davitamon vitamins
AD, Davitamin 5 and Davitamin B complex.
Over the years the brand has grown into one of the
most well-known and highly trusted vitamin and
mineral brands in the Netherlands and in Belgium.
Davitamon offers a wide range of products that are

needs. By continuing to do continuously conducting
R&D Davitamon regularly introduces new and

4. Organon was a large pharmaceutical company founded in Oss. The history of the company
dates back when Arnold van Zwanenberg descendent of a family of livestock owners and
meat traders started a slaughterhouse in Oss called Zwanenberg Slachterijen en
Fabrieken in 1887. This slaughterhouse expanded with numerous additional activities for
the processing of by-products such a bacon curing, fat melting, sausages, margarine
production, refinery for animal oils and fats as well as production of ice-cream, soap and
canned foods. The margarine, oil, fats and soap were subsequently sold to a predecessor
of Unilever.
Meanwhile at the slaughterhouse they were investigating how to use make optimal use of
the offal from the Zwanenberg production plants. At the beginning of the 20th century,
discoveries in the field of medicines indicated that there might be a number of medically
useful substances that could be extracted from animal protein. For instance, how to extract
insulin from the pancreas from animals.
In order to conduct further research in this relatively new field, Saal van Zwanenberg
founded Organon as a subsidiary of Zwanenberg. In collaboration with chemists Ernst
Laqueur and Jacques van Oss, Organon discovered a way to extract insulin from the
pancreas of pigs slaughtered on an industrial scale. This was the first product introduced
by Organon thanks to its uniqueness it was sold highly successful around the world. In
1924 Organon introduced 'Ovarnon' to the market, which has been recovered from ovaries
of horses. These contain the hormone estrogen which were used for the development of
fertility enhancers and for prevention of menopausal symptoms.
In the following years a range of products were developed by Organon, including raw
materials for the manufacturing industry, chemicals for cleaning and household care
products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Including of course also the introduction of
Davitamon vitamins in 1928.

5. After the Second World War, Zwanenberg Organon (as the company was more known
internationally) was represented in over 40 countries worldwide and was growing rapidly in
becoming a reputable multinational. This also included various acquisitions among others
self-care medications company Chefaro. Following the acquisition all self-care medication
products from Organon were combined with Chefaro including the brands Davitamon and
Azaron.
In 1967, the business merged its activities with Koninklijke Zout Ketjen (salt company) and
the merged entity became known as Koninklijke Zout Organon. In 1969, Koninklijke Zout
Organon was acquired by Dutch multinational AKZO. Under the wings of AKZO the
pharmaceutical division continued with new innovations and revolutionary product
introduction contraceptive pill Marvelon in 1981. Chefaro also continued with its growth as
a specialist in self-care medication. By the early 70s Predictor the first pregnancy test for
home use, was introduced. From the beginnings, this launch became a great success.
Within two years, this product was sold in twelve countries, including the USA.
In 1994, AKZO Nobel was formed following the acquisition of Nobel Industries by AKZO. A
few years later, in 1999, AKZO Nobel decided to divest Chefaro (together with its brands
Azaron, Chefarine, Predictor and Davitamon)and was subsequently acquired by Belgian
company Omega Pharma in 2001. In the year therafter Omega Pharma also acquires
Samenwerkende Apothekers, Tendem, Biodermal and Bional in the Netherlands and put
these businesses under the responsibility of Chefaro. Chefaro became the largest
organization within the Dutch healthcare market and following the acquisition of Biodermal
it is also became a leading a player in the Dutch cosmetics market. Chefaro was renamed
to Omega Pharma Nederland BV in 2011.
