3. Complexity around identity…
‘’ on one hand identity is something unique to
each of us, yet on the other hand identity also
implies a relationship with a broader collective
or social group’’
this explains how Buckingham sees identity, in a
nutshell it is basically suggesting that identity is
complex yet can be shared with many others
and imply relations.
5. Mandem on the wall
Using the case study of the Mandem on the wall
shows that teenagers are aware of the
stereotypes created by the dominant ideology
about the London riots however are trying to
challenge it by creating a more positive picture
of themselves.
6. What web 2.0 is used for…
Buckingham believes teenagers use blogs for 2
types of reasons…
1) Create their own identity
2) Self express
Through this they challenge the representation
created by mainstream media.
7. ‘Nice shiny me’
Buckingham suggest that blogs provide the
opportunity for a ‘nice shiny me’ which suggest
some teenagers use blogs and personal websites
to present a facet and facets of themselves that
they may not be able to do in real life
8. Youth authors
• Youth authors are able to represent teens on
their personal sites in public.
• Versions of themselves that may be stifled in
other settings.
• They gradually create images they want others
to see.
