Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

We are living in a time of turbulent change, putting pressure on businesses of all sizes and across all industries. The world is also changing, in other fundamental ways. It is becoming smaller, flatter and smarter. As a result, leaders across all types of enterprises are faced with new challenges in order to remain successful. Those organizations who address these challenges are best positioned to outperform their competitors. The signs of a smarter planet are all around us. Data is being captured today as never before. It reveals everything from large and systemic patterns—of global markets, workflows, national infrastructures and natural systems—to the location, temperature, security and condition of every item in a global supply chain. At IBM, we want that intelligence to be infused into the systems and processes that make the world work—into things no one would recognize as computers: cars , appliances , roadways , power grids , clothes , even natural systems such as agriculture and waterways . Since 2008 , we've talked about what it takes to build a smarter planet. We've learned that our companies, our cities and our world are complex systems-indeed, systems of systems. Advancing these systems to be more instrumented, intelligent and interconnected requires a profound shift in management and governance toward far more collaborative approaches.
It is clear that in this new era, companies are faced with unprecedented IT challenges as they have to meet demands for new applications and services, while their IT budgets are flat or growing on average by less than one percent per year. There is an explosion that’s occurring in the industry especially around servers, storage and data. New internet connected devices are growing rapidly, from smart phones to iPads and tablets. Ubiquitous computing & sensory devices – like eMeters – are shifting computing outward from the datacenter and driving new workloads. And data is going to continue to drive profound opportunities for innovation and integration, especially considering that we see multiple copies of data being stored, which increases needs for data integration, management and governance.
Smarter Computing is delivered through a combination of three characteristics of an IT infrastructure. The key point is that this is an IT infrastructure that actually enables a Smarter Planet. As clients want to seize the opportunities that are presented by a Smarter Planet they need to think differently about their infrastructure. Why? Why do they need to design for the data, all the data that they need, not just the data that they traditionally use of new forms of information? Because companies are challenged to harness all this information. In fact 89% of CEOs actually say that they want better insight through business intelligence. This is a challenge of the IT department to design their infrastructure for all of this data. Tuned to the task, this is really about leveraging optimized systems, systems that are optimized for specific workloads to drive greater performance and improve IT economics. Why? Because today we have the ability to reduce total cost per workload by up to 55% and drive tremendous savings by matching the right system to the workload, the applications that need to be supported, the data that needs to be used. It’s a tremendous opportunity. Why do we need to manage with cloud technologies? Because cloud actually gives the opportunity to reinvent IT and transform service delivery. 60% of CIOs plan to use cloud technologies which is up almost two fold over a year ago. 55% of business executives believe that cloud can enable business transformation. The business is demanding a new approach to IT; they want it managed differently to be able to deliver service delivery, better quality the way they want to consume it.
DB2 Web Query provides analytics for IBM i clients and is focused on business intelligence and reporting solutions for small and midsized companies. The primary capability of DB2 Web Query is provide simple-to-use but advanced tools to create formatted and interactive reports. Its advanced capability for parameter driven reports simplifies report management by significantly reducing the number of report definitions required. DB2 Web Query enables executives to monitor the business by build simple dashboards or compound reports to provide Key Performance Indicator (KPI) views. It also provides the foundation for high performance analysis through OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing), with interactive analytics for slicing and dicing and drill-down. DB2 Web Query makes it very easy to extend enterprise-wide reporting, with scheduled report execution and automatic distribution. Reports and analysis can be delivered to in multiple formats, including directly into spreadsheets, in high-quality PDF format, or viewed in a browser. It’s also easy to integrate DB2 Web Query reporting functions into IBM i line of business or customized applications, whether they are run in a browser or on traditional ‘green screens’. To provide business users a better understanding of their data through interactive data visualization capabilities, DB2 Web Query provides capabilities such as matrix reporting, ranking, color coding, and drill-down. And for the growing number of users with smart mobile devices, DB2 Web Query’s active technologies enable reporting without having to be connected to the server while providing ability to filter, chart, and visualize data relationships.
Rational Developer for Power provides rich desktop Integrated Development Environments to create, maintain, or port applications to IBM Power Systems. Provides a rich family of tools integrated into an Eclipse workbench for IBM i, AIX, or Linux. Take full advantage of industry leading compiler optimization technology when used in combination with IBM Power Systems compilers. Realize developer productivity gains by moving from older text-based – green screen -- command-line development tools, to a rich integrated development environment. RPG Open Access. To further modernize the language and allow RPG-based applications to interface with the wide range of new devices and resources, enhancements have been made to RPG IV in IBM i 7.1 and 6.1 to open up the file I/O capabilities, allowing anyone to write innovative I/O handlers to access other devices and resources such as browsers, Mobile devices, XML files etc. After feedback from IBM I clients and ISVs, we have now made RPG Open Access no charge, so everyone will be able to take advantage of the capability in new or modernized applications. Application Management Toolset. COMMON is a great place to give us feedback on product requirements. Last year in Minneapolis for example, I met with a group of IBM i clients from Sweden. One of the companies needed a subset of the Rational Application Development Toolset for what they called their ‘super users’. After that meeting we delivered a solution to that company, and we have just made the same option available to all clients with the Rational Application Management Toolset.
With Power Systems and PowerVM, we have a secure and scalable foundation for you to implement a private or public cloud. We have been strongly investing in cloud technologies for all three of our operating environments on Power, and this chart shows you the progress we have made with IBM i. We actually first introduced logical partitions on the AS/400 in 1999, which gave us the option to consolidate virtual images. In 2001, we had a major leap forward with micro-partitioning (VMs could be less than one core) and dynamic resource sharing between partitions. This really increased the effectiveness and cost benefits of virtualization, and is one of the major reasons that we see over 80% of clients using PowerVM today. In recent years, we have been focused on more advanced virtualization and cloud provisioning, including supporting Virtual I/O Server (VIOS), to share I/O resources across VMs. We have also focused on virtual image management, with capabilities like network install of VMs, suspend resume of VMs, and the capture and provisioning of VMs. Now, we just announced in April one of the final pieces of the puzzle, with Live Partition Mobility for IBM i. This enables you to take a running partition and move it to another server. LPM is delivered in IBM I 7.1 Technology Refresh 4, which will be available May 2012.
The time has come for a new breed of systems. Expert integrated systems are systems with integrated expertise that combine the flexibility of a general purpose system, the elasticity of cloud and the simplicity of an appliance tuned to the workload – fundamentally changing the experience and economics of IT. Of course, the concept of integrated systems has its roots in the AS/400, but this takes that concept to a different scale across all of IBM’s software and systems technologies. The time has come for a new class of systems: systems with integrated expertise and built for cloud that combine the flexibility of general purpose system, the elasticity of cloud and the simplicity of an appliance Built-in expertise. Think of expert integrated systems as representing the collective knowledge of thousands of deployments, established best practices, innovative thinking, IT industry leadership, and the distilled expertise of business partners and solution providers. Captured into the system in a deployable form from the base system infrastructure through the application. Integrated by design. All the hardware and software components are deeply integrated and tuned in the lab and packaged in the factory into a single ready-to-go system that is optimized for the workloads it will be running.. All of the integration is done for you, by experts. Simpler experience – from the moment you start designing what you need to the time you purchase – to setting up the system – to operating, maintaining and upgrading it over time. Management of the entire system of physical and virtual resources is integrated. And all this is done in an open manner enabling participation by a broad ecosystem of partners to bring their industry optimized solutions to bear.
On April 11, we announced first two members of the IBM PureSystems family – IBM PureFlex and IBM PureApplication Systems. Each member is integrated by design with built-in expertise – delivering a truly simplified experience. IBM PureFlex System Expert at sensing and anticipating resource needs to optimize infrastructure Factory integrated and optimized system infrastructure Integrated management Automation and optimization expertise Support AIX, IBM i, Linux and Windows IBM PureApplication System Expert in optimally deploying and running applications for rapid time-to-value Expert designed, integrated and optimized application aware platform Workload patterns of expertise Simplified management with a single console
We announced Power Systems at COMMON Nashville in April 2008. We said then that we would continue to enhance IBM i, and provide support for IBM i on day 1 on all of our new Power Systems servers. We have followed through on those commitments, with IBM i 6.1, 7.1, multiple technology refreshes, with POWER7 and now the new PureSystems. Over time IBM clients have requested fewer major operating system releases and longer support cycles, since major release upgrades can be disruptive for a business. Interim technology refreshes (TRs) provide faster access to new capabilities, they are simpler to install on a current release and less disruptive to the business. Clients should expect IBM to continue to deliver regular TRs through 2012-2013, before we introduce our next major release in 2014. IBM i live partition mobility is a good example of how clients can access technology faster with the new TR strategy. Live Partition Mobility was originally planned to be included in a major new release, but delivering it in the more accessible TR4 will substantially accelerate its adoption. IBM has announced that IBM i 5.4 will be supported through September 2013. For clients that need additional time to migrate to a supported release of IBM i, IBM intends to announce a fee based extended service offering for IBM i 5.4. Hardware maintenance is not affected by this announcement.
This chart shows the IBM developerworks web site which we are using for more and more valuable technical information about IBM i. IBM i operating system (OS) levels and related software products are frequently enhanced via PTFs. Prior to the existence of this wiki, IBM did not provide an easy way for customers to become aware of off-release enhancements. This wiki will be used by IBM i to provide a centralized location for communicating IBM i enhancements. The enhancements come in different forms. Some enhancements are PTF'd into all or a subset of in-service releases. In other cases, we take enhancements provided in a base OS and PTF the support back to a previous release. In all cases, we use customer value, cost and risk to guide our decisions regarding off release enhancements. The technology update material has been organized by subject matter and category of enhancement. As with other wiki's, you are encouraged to enable self notification of future changes by selecting the Notify me of Page Changes option.
I want to talk to you now about our IBM Champion Program IBM Champions are recognized leaders and experts in their technical communities Champions are outside of IBM and represent IT professionals, developers, business leaders, educators and more Champions participate and lead user groups, they blog and tweet, participate in forums and online discussions, write technical articles and much more
