This document summarizes a survey of over 300 contributions to the field of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) from 2000-2008. It finds that interest and publications in CBIR have grown exponentially in this period, as the field has expanded to include techniques from computer vision, machine learning, and other areas. The survey reviews key approaches to CBIR, including addressing the real-world challenges of building useful image retrieval systems. It also examines related areas like evaluation of CBIR systems and applications to problems like image annotation.
