The document discusses challenges with existing corporate data sources for journalists and introduces OpenCorporates as an alternative. OpenCorporates aims to create an entry for every corporate legal entity in the world based on official identifiers rather than proprietary IDs. It provides tools for journalists like simple search across multiple jurisdictions, additional linked data for entities, and reconciliation of company names to legal entities. The database is open and user-contributed, allowing searches by officer name. However, more work is still needed as coverage is not fully comprehensive.

SharePoint BCS, OK. But what is the SharePoint Business Data List Connector (...Layer2
The Layer2 Business Data List Connector for SharePoint makes it as easy as possible to connect native SharePoint lists to almost any external data source, codeless and bi-directional. The app closes many issues and overcomes limitations that still exist with SharePoint out-of-the-box data integration today.
To configure simply:
1. Enter connection string
2. Enter select statement
3. Enter primary keys.
Fast background updates (changed data only) via timer job. Alerts and workflows can be used to take business actions in SharePoint, when external data records are changed. Optionally write-back changes to data source.
Take advantage of FME Server’s capabilities for real-time integration and change data capture. Learn about workflows for monitoring and updating your data as it changes. We’ll look at what data sources/systems are monitored out-of-the-box and how you can enable change data capture for other data sources/systems.

Facebook recently came under fire for the discreet international roll-out of its photo facial recognition feature. This feature automatically identifies and suggests tags for individuals appearing in photos posted on Facebook. At first glance, this seemingly innocuous feature appears to quietly augment online social lives. At second glance, the rollout of this feature as a defaulted-to-on setting with no explicit user consent raises many privacy concerns. As a site with extensive power driven by the quantity, quality, and kind of data it collects, Facebook’s decision to step into the world of visual recognition of its users without formal user consent is a big no-no—or is it?
Join us for this month’s eBoost Consulting Brown Bag Lunch Webinar to explore this and other cases that raise internet privacy concerns. Learn the ins, outs, and nuances of internet privacy to determine where to draw the line on data collection and usage.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
