The IBM Fellows program is a prestigious honor that has a direct correlation to the company's innovation and technology leadership. The honorees include a diverse group of IBMers with one thing in common: a commitment to tackling the world’s biggest problems with ingenuity, invention and inspiration. A common thread for many of this year’s inductees is their commitment to developing solutions and practical applications in the field of Big Data and Analytics. IBM is a leader in the space – with 1500 Big Data and Analytics-related patents in 2013 alone, and $24 billion in investments since 2005 through both acquisitions and R&D – and these fellows maintain the drumbeat of momentum that has made IBM number one in Big Data market share for the second year running.

The digital transformation time has witnessed flourishing on the internet and social media practice globally. Accordingly, companies started to depend on digital marketing channels such as websites, social media platforms, blogs, and videos, etc. Also, companies’ dependence on digital marketing channels will grow significantly in the future to be able to reach the current and the prospective customers, as customers spend longer time online more than the traditional media such as TV, radio, and printed newspaper.

To be of value, big data must often flow across national borders from one country to another. Mandated local data storage of consumer as well as industrial data can restrict or prevent these data flows. This presentation examines restrictive data trade policies and the implications for companies and countries.
This keynote presentation discusses how the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the nature of certain products by enabling them to build large ecosystems and complements that elevate them from the mundane to the strategic. This has important implication for energy and energy efficiency given broader forces that are reshaping the energy landscape, namely the rise of denser networks (physical, grids, pipelines, fiber, etc.), growth in digital information and the opportunity for new forms and power of analytics and the shift to platform business models that harness network effects by building large ecosystems and incentivizing complements that increase the value of the platforms. Linked to this is the rise of the API Economy, which is creating a new ways to exchange valuable information. In short, a new “energy data layer” is emerging with powerful implications for the future energy intelligence, productivity and efficiency.

Business Intelligence and Analytics Education, and Program
Development: A Unique Opportunity for the Information
Systems Discipline

EDWARD A. STOHR, Stevens Institute of Technology
“Big Data,” huge volumes of data in both structured and unstructured forms generated by the Internet,
social media, and computerized transactions, is straining our technical capacity to manage it. More impor-
tantly, the new challenge is to develop the capability to understand and interpret the burgeoning volume of
data to take advantage of the opportunities it provides in many human endeavors, ranging from science to
business. Data Science, and in business schools, Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) are emerging
disciplines that seek to address the demands of this new era. Big Data and BI&A present unique challenges
and opportunities not only for the research community, but also for Information Systems (IS) programs at
business schools. In this essay, we provide a brief overview of BI&A, speculate on the role of BI&A education
in business schools, present the challenges facing IS departments, and discuss the role of IS curricula and
program development, in delivering BI&A education. We contend that a new vision for the IS discipline
should address these challenges.

AI is Not Magic: It’s Time to Demystify and Apply Srinivasan Parthiban (VINGY...Dr. Haxel Consult
The term Artificial Intelligence was first coined in 1956 and since then the technology has progressed, disappointed, and re-emerged. Now the prediction is that AI will add $16 trillion to the global economy by 2030. AI is becoming as fundamental as electricity, the internet, and mobile as they were born into the mainstream. Not having an AI strategy in 2020 will be like not having a mobile strategy in 2010, or an Internet strategy in 2000. As a result of technology advancements, AI-related patent applications have surged over the recent years. The patent searchers, information professionals and bioinformatics researchers who have been involved in collecting data, organizing the data and analysing the data are starting to move up in the ladder with AI. Of course, AI can help you, your business, your employees, and your customers, but you need a prescriptive approach to harness its power and put AI to work. This presentation will take a glimpse under the hood of AI and look into some recent trends in data and analytics that are relevant to the information professionals.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

For many years most GE revenues were based on the sale of engines to leading aircraft manufacturers as
well as maintenance and repair services. In 2011, following increased competition from software companies,
GE launched the “industrial internet” that includes installation of advanced digital sensors that collect data
on engine performance, and the development of advanced analytics capabilities. Analysis of collected data
enabled the company to develop innovative products and to change its business model from product sale
to performance based. The gaining momentum of the Internet of Things is ushering in the DDI era. As more
“things” become connected more data can be collected and optimization and analyses can be conducted,
leading to new business models, improved finances and productivity growth.
