- The hashtag oscarssowhite was started to bring awareness to the all white nominees for the Academy Awards. I am collecting data about the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag to see the effects of the rebellion against racism in Hollywood. I selected this hashtag because the fight against racism in Hollywood may only have an immediate effect on a select group of people. However, these actors receive so much media attention that this fight is spanning outside of one award to have a large social influence. The #OscarsSoWhite brings the topic of racism and social injustice in social media to a united cause. An award should be received because of a great performance. Race, gender, and sexuality should not stand in the way of someone's success. Many actors including George Clooney believe that “the real problems are the diversity from the beginning, the people who are greenlighting films.” Clooney insisted that the Hollywood studios approach to creating films needs change from the agencies to the writers. However, not all are I support of the movement including Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding who insist that the Academy is in the process of making changes. There has even been talk of bringing back the black Oscars formerly known as the tree of life awards.
- My data set is all from the same day February 29, 2016. This was the day of the Academy Awards. There are some large time gaps in my data set that I think come from the failure of the google drive document to collect the massive amount of tweets that came in. There was a huge spike in the number of tweets at 5:05-5:20 time period that could be due to the protest where #OscarsSoWhite supporters gathered near the outside interview area as guest arrived to increase awareness about the topic. I think that the diminishing tweets just at the end of the Academy Awards is not a good sign for the #oscarssowhite discussion to make a lasting impact.
- I think that it is important to remember that this issue is not just focused on the black population but every minority. The word cloud is interesting because while the words are made larger by their frequency, I find myself looking at the smaller words including: women, Asian, Latino, and opportunity. These topics may seem small compared to size in the word cloud, but they were mentioned enough times to make them relevant. I chose to examine Chris Rock’s opening monologue. I think that Chris Rock made a big impact and in publicly supporting the Oscars so white movement at the Oscars he made a big step for the movement. This data seems very different to me because, having read the full monologue, selecting a few words does not really represent the purpose or effect of the speech. I think that tweets are so short because they are limited to only a few characters, but when you examine a longer piece of work the frequency of words does not portray as much of an effect.

Don’t do that.” – Nathan Yau “Data is an abstraction of real life, and real life can be complicated, but if you gather enough context, you can at least put forth a solid effort to make sense of it” -Nathan Yau The messages in these tweets are all over the place and it’s impossible to analyze each and every one, but I have accumulated so many tweets that I can analyze the smaller parts of them and put together to make some sense of the impact this data can have. When analyzing twitter data on a social issue there needs to be more room for interpretation and trying to really understand the data, as used in Yau’s approach. Nathan Yau describes different types of data visualization as a method to understand and combine data and represent the full picture. He says, “A major mistake is to treat every dataset the same and use the same canned methods and tools. Don’t do that.” The word cloud visualization reminded me that this issue impacts every minority. Analysis of the data reveals that this issue stems beyond the winner of an award and has huge connections to a large number of social injustices including the black lives matter movement and the gender pay gap.
- #OscarsSoWhite focuses on the social injustice of the awarding of Oscars based on race. However, this issue provides a platform to discuss a large range of social injustices. I hope that this movement does not die out now that the Oscars have ended, but continues to challenge the barriers of our society.
