2. Danish literature
A little timeline
- The Middle Ages:
- Denmark’s first literature appeared in inscriptions using the runic alphabet.
- The 16th Century:
- Sixteenth-century Danish poetry was religious or polemical with fine love poetry and hymns.
- The Literary Renaissance:
- Thomas Kingo was a prominent poet. His hymns reflect a violent, passionate character,
worldly and yet deeply religious.
- The 18th Century:
- Ludvig Holberg promoted a discussion about morality and the social structure, when being a
playwright for Danish theatre.
- At the same time, a revival of emotional poetry was taking place.
- The Romantic period
- In Denmark, writers started exploring the emotional novels, poems and plays.

4. Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754)
- Norwegian by birth, Danish by heart
- Contributed to Danish Literature
- Playwright/Dramatist for the first Danish-language theatre in Copenhagen (1722)
- Subjects in his pieces:
- morality, satire and the former Danish aristocratic social structure
- Holberg’s way of using humor...
- Holberg changed the Danish Literature in the 18th century
5. H.C. Andersen (1805-1875)
