7. RULES OF SCRUM
AS EXPLAINED BY AGILE ADVICE
The rules of Scrum related to the Team Member Role
I am truthful about the internal quality of my product (technical debt)
I know my product well and can quickly describe its high-level purpose
I actively seek to help my team mates
I commit myself to doing whatever it takes to reach each and every Sprint goal
I volunteer for a new task from the Sprint backlog as soon as I complete a task
I share my obstacles (technical, tools, process, teamwork, personal) every Daily Scrum
I am willing to learn any skill needed to help my team
I work with all the team members to expand the Definition of “Done”
I live the values and principles of the Agile Manifesto in my team
I never tell any other individual team member which task to work on next
8. BLIND SPOT OF AGILE
Not all people are disciplined
Not all people are attentive
Not all people are skilled*
Not all people know what they want
Not all people want to work
Not all people care
*But they can be and even want to be
9. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Culture
No matter what you do to make people more effective and behave competently, it all depends on whether
they actually care.
What we do wrong
• We often hear (and say): “Not our project”
• Customer is an alien and not a partner
• Other departments, leadership, out whole company are at fault
• We always need someone to blame
10. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFICCulture
No matter what you do to make people more effective and behave competently, it all depends on whether
they actually care.
What we can do
• Increase visibility
• Show what is done on customer side
• Always share info on your activities (as a leader)
• Share info on cooperation with other departments
• Praise others (not only yourselves)
• Focus on satisfying the main objectives of the project
11. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Instructions /Teaching / Mentoring
Teach people to be competent. To be Agile.
What we do wrong
• Don’t team teammates to learn
• Don’t teach teammates to communicate
• Don’t teach them to open up
• Don’t teach them to trust each other
12. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Instructions /Teaching / Mentoring
Teach people to be competent. To be Agile.
What we can do
• Organize group professional trainings
• Set requirements to your trainers
• Invite auditors/assessors with recommendations
• Set the example – learn and brag about it
13. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Tests
Require people to be properly and regularly tested to suit requirements of the project.
What we do wrong
• We are afraid of tests ourselves
• We connect testing with performance, promotion criteria and salary increase
14. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Tests
Require people to be properly and regularly tested to suit requirements of the project.
What we can do
• Use tests and certification as a tool of learning
• Use tests regularly
• Promote the change in attitude towards testing in your company
• Read “How We Learn” by Benedict Carey
15. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Proactive tools and techniques
Don’t let people “just do Agile” and “follow the routines”. People need guidelines and constraints.
What we do wrong
• We assume Agile Manifesto or some Scrum trainings are enough to organize people
• We trust the team to self-organize
• We trust the team to come up with effective rules
• We trust the team to be competent and disciplined
16. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFICProactive tools and techniques
Don’t let people “just do Agile” and “follow the routines”. People need guidelines and constraints.
What we can do
• Use checklists, smart tool, notifications
• Frequently evaluate the effectiveness of the tools you use
• Conduct surveys on how easy and clear your tools are
• Automate everything
• Integrate everything
• Use the tools yourself
17. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Feedback
Noticing what is really wrong and talking about that requires courage and trust.
What we do wrong
• We don’t give feedback and do it inconsistently
• We don’t like to hear feedback
• We use Retrospectives as the only tool of feedback
• We use 1:1 inconsistently and with detrimental results
18. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Feedback
Noticing what is really wrong and talking about that requires courage and trust.
What we can do
• Understand the nature of feedback (being goal-oriented and information driven)
• Learn to accept compliments
• Promote feedback seeking in your team and your company
19. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Management
“Management will need to clean up the mess”.
What we do wrong
• Use team members as scape goats in case something goes wrong
• Forget the definition of Project Manager/Manager/Leader
• Behave like know-it-alls
• Again, trust people to clean their mess
20. MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DUTCH
TRAFFIC
Management
“Management will need to clean up the mess”.
What we can do
• Take responsibility
• Define escalation procedure and teach the team how to use it
• Increase visibility of your project to higher management (they can help)
