When forming the thesis (argument, opinion), recall that a good opinion is always supported by facts.
Write the essay from the first-person point of view of a law enforcement officer, the first-person point of view of a wildlife hunter, the first-person point of view of an anti-gun proponent who despises freedom and the Second Amendment to our beloved Constitution, or the first-person point of view of a convicted felon who possesses several automatic weapons, all of which have been illegally obtained.
Just a reminder for anyone who needs it: When writing from the first-person point of view of a law enforcement officer, the voice in your entire essay must be the voice of a law enforcement officer (or hunter, or anti-gun person, or convicted felon), and the voice must be especially strong in the introductory and concluding paragraphs. Do not write about the voice,
be
the voice. Write from only
one
point of view, not all four.
The language in assignments that require writing from a particular point of view must conform to the “Checklist for Essays and Other Writing Assignments.” For example, a dirty rotten scoundrel would probably use some unsavory language filled with inappropriate expletives, but if an English Composition student were writing from the point of view of a dirty rotten scoundrel, the voice must be that of a dirty rotten scoundrel, but the writing (usage, grammar, language mechanics) must be suitable for English Composition classroom expectations.

Proofreading for APA style
As we move into the final stage of this writing project, it might be a good idea to go back and
review the entire APA guide to ensure that you have all of the pieces in place for this final step.
Throughout this tutorial, we will discuss some of the key areas you need to look at when
proofreading to make sure your paper meets APA standards.
Checking your Work
This checklist should be used to ensure that your papers and documents are in proper APA style.
Formatting:
● Font used is 12 pt Times New Roman.
● One inch margins on all sides.
● Running head is the title of your paper (up to 50 characters; no longer than five words).
● Running head (abbreviated title) is flush left and in ALL-CAPS.
● Page number is top, flush right, starting on the title page
In-text Citations:
● Do you provide appropriate in-text (i.e. parenthetical) citations for all uses of external
source material?
● Do those in-text (i.e. parenthetical) citations include all of the necessary information (e.g.
author name(s), dates)?
● Do those in-text (i.e. parenthetical) citations precede the final punctuation of the
sentences in which they appear?
Reference Page:
● Is your References page separated from the last page of your paper with a page-break? It
is important that your References page begin at the top of a new page immediately
following the last page of the text of your essay, report, paper, etc. So, you need to insert
a page-break (e.g. see the “insert” menu if using Microsoft Word) after the last line of the
3
text of your paper, rather than using the Return/Enter key, to ensure that your list of
References begins at the top of the following page.
● Is your References page formatted according to the guidelines outlined above (e.g. is the
title References centered)?
Are lines following the first line in each entry, indented appropriately? Hint: the way to
ensure proper indentation is by setting/changing the hanging indent within your
document, rather than by using space or tab key.

Please read this week’s Lessons and then read the information below.
What is the purpose of Modern Language Association (MLA)?
According to Hacker, there are three main objectives in MLA: “(1) supporting a
thesis, (2) citing your sources and avoiding plagiarism, and (3) integrating
quotations and other source material” (395).
You have already learned how to write a thesis and how to compose a well-
organized essay. Now it is time to learn how to include research to support your
ideas.
Why do I need to include research in my writing?
Quite simply, we do not know everything. We need to research whatever topic we
are discussing to learn more about it and also to support our claims. Hacker
explains, “expert opinion can give weight to your argument” (398). For example, if
I were writing a paper about Abraham Lincoln, I would already know some things
about him, but not all. If I wanted to emphasize his work towards ending slavery,
for example, it would be great to include scholarly research about this to support
my claims. Through research, I could find specific dates and legislation and other
important work that the president put forth towards this worthy cause.
Hacker writes, “in a research paper, you will draw on the work of other writers, and
you must document their contributions by citing your sources. Sources are cited for
two reasons: 1. to tell readers where your information comes from—so that they
can assess its reliability and, if interested, find and read the original sources. 2. to
give credit to the writers from whom you have borrowed words and ideas” (399).
The only exception is common knowledge. This is information that you already
knew (without looking it up) or is considered to be general knowledge. (Example:
most people know that New York City is referred to as “The Big Apple.” Therefore,
there is no need to cite a source for that.) However, if you are in doubt, it is better
to be safe than sorry; go ahead and cite the source.
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is taking material from a source and including it in your paper as if you
wrote it yourself, without giving any credit to the original author. This can be
material from articles, books, the internet, other students’ essays, or a variety of
other materials.
To avoid plagiarism, you may either use direct quotes or paraphrase the
material. A direct quote is material that is copied word for word, EXACTLY as the
author has written it. You must put quotation marks around a direct quote.
When you paraphrase, you put what is written in your own words. (Hint: the best
way to paraphrase is to read the material, completely look away from it, and then
rewrite it in your own words. Looking away from the article will help you resist
including language that is too close to the original text.)

Research Paper – 150 points
Your final essay in English is a research paper that provides an opportunity to delve fully into a topic of your interest. Writing a research paper—while a challenge—offers a reason to read, research, reflect, think deeply, then address and formally answer in writing a question worth exploring. See the bottom of this document for possible topics.
This assignment is designed to utilize all the skills we have learned this semester, including in-text MLA citation techniques and documentation of sources we have learned in our lab sessions.
The length of the essay should be a minimum of four pages, but no longer than seven pages.
RESEARCH PAPER TIMELINE AND ASSIGNMENTS:
Select a controversial topic - My choice of topic is HUMAN CLONING
Minimum of 4 pages and no more than 7 pages.
A controversial topic is one that reasonable individuals can argue over and that has at least two sides. Gun control and abortion are two classic topics that are controversial; the life of your favorite actor or the history of baroque music are not controversial.
Once you select your prompt, begin researching reliable sources and compiling them into an annotated bibliography. This is a good time to visit our Library and the library’s website and database of academic articles.
List of sources, a working thesis, and first pages of rough draft - 20 points
When this step in the process is due, you will need to have compiled an annotated bibliography (a list of sources with brief descriptions of the source) from your research on your topic. As you encounter sources that relate to your topic, be sure to paraphrase key ideas, record word-for-word quotations you may want to use, and note page numbers from the sources that you can easily reference once you begin to write the paper.
As a research paper, this assignment requires research, which means you need to reference at least three outside sources:
· An article or essay from a reliable, trustworthy source. You should try to include an article from one of the library online databases, if possible.
· One book on the topic, if available; otherwise, you may use another trustworthy source.
· One other source (i.e. another essay from the library database, a website, video, DVD, interview with someone knowledgeable about the topic, etc);
· Note: Please do not cite Wikipedia for this research paper
Turn in your annotated bibliography along with the first pages of your rough draft. By this due date you will need to identify a working thesis statement. (A “working thesis” refers to the idea that because your research will eventually lead to what position you take on your topic, the final thesis will begin to take shape as you read and think about your topic.)
Your thesis statement—which in its final version will answer the question you have identified to research—is a one-sentence (or occasionally two-sentence) statement of your central idea.

Writing and Formatting ENGL 2113 Essays
Overview
Each essay (W3, W4, and W4) should be approximately 750 words in length and include the
following:
A title, which reflects both the topic and your thesis
Four (and only four) paragraphs:
o an introductory paragraph that ends with an underlined thesis statement
o two body/support paragraphs that begin with an underlined topic sentence
o a concluding paragraph
At least two authoritative, credible online sources of support, which are cited in the text
and included on a Works Cited or Reference page. The sources must be correctly
formatted using either MLA or APA style.
Follow these steps to format and save your essay:
Set margins at 1 inch
• Set line spacing at either 1.5 or 2
• Insert a header with your last name and page number aligned to the right
• In the body of the first page, aligned to the left, include:
o your full name
o instructor’s name
o ENGL 2113 (your section number)
o date
• Include a title for the essay, one that reflects the topic and your thesis
• Save the document as a Word document
• Name the file YourLastName Assignment # (for example, Smith W3)
Follow these seven steps to write, submit, and review feedback on your essay:
1. Read the Essay Grading Guidelines document
If you don’t meet these criteria, you will lose points.
2. Read the assigned essay prompts
Each essay prompt will be posted to D2L.
3. Outline your argument
Before writing your essay, write out your thesis and the topic sentences you plan to use to defend
that thesis. You will submit these three sentences for the W1 assignment. You will not turn in the
2
these statements separately for the other essay assignments; however, you would be wise to write
them out before you write each essay:
Thesis: In one sentence, state your opinion, or your stand, on the assigned topic.
Topic/reason sentence one: In one sentence, state one reason WHY the reader should accept
your opinion.
Topic/reason sentence two: In one sentence, state a second reason WHY the reader should
accept your argument.
Reminder: A topic/reason sentence has two jobs: to serve as a reason in support of your thesis, and
to announce which reason will be discussed and supported in the body paragraph that follows.
Again, each topic sentence should be a reason in support of your thesis, not simply an introduction
to the paragraph.
4. Write your paragraphs
Paragraph one: an introductory paragraph. Assume that the reader of your essay does not know
the assignment topic. First introduce the reader to the topic of the essay. Do not start the
introductory paragraph with your thesis. End the paragraph with your thesis. Underline the
thesis statement.
Paragraph two: a body or support paragraph that is 7-10 sentences in length. Begin this body
paragraph with your first topic/reason sentence. Underline the topic sentence. Devote the

Devote the

What is an Exploratory PaperExploratory Argument In explorat.docxalanfhall8953
What is an Exploratory Paper?
Exploratory Argument:
In exploratory essays, the writer (you) explores three sources that take a position on a controversial issue. All three sources can take the same side of the issue or two can take the same side and one can be on the other side of the issue. For example, take this issue: “Should there be stricter copyright penalties on the Internet? For instance, all three sources explored may argue that once a person uploads a photograph on, for example, flickr.com, it becomes public domain and no copyright laws should apply. The sources explored will argue on the same side of the issue, they all answer the issue question: yes. Yet, they will present evidence that will align with their different perspectives. For example, one source may take a legal perspective and the evidence will come from legal sources; another source may take a psychological perspective and their evidence to support their position will come from psychological studies, etc. In addition, the sources must come from a variety of secondary sources: scholarly journals, magazines, and/or newspapers, and the sources cannot be all Websites.
The Purpose
In the exploratory paper, the writer identifies three sources that take the same side of the issue; this means, for each source, their thesis statements/claims are the same. In order to help the reader (students, instructor) understand each source’s argument, the writer, (you) will include a brief 2-3 sentence summary for each source that includes the writer’s thesis/claim and the reasons provided to support his or her perspective. Also, this will include an analysis of how well the reasons and evidence support their position and their perspective. This requires specific references from the work in the form of direct quotations. This last part is important. Your own opinions are not expressed at all. This is not an argument paper.
Advantages to Writing an Exploratory Paper
Exploratory papers have a number of advantages. When you view an issue from many perspectives, you gain a greater depth of understanding of it and the various views taken. Also, exploratory papers provide mutual understanding and common ground for you next stage in argument: writing your own argument paper. These sources can be used to support your side to an issue or they may be used as an opposing view to your own position. After exploring sources on an issue, you learn about the other positions on this controversial issue.
How to Write the Exploratory Paper
The exploratory framework appears on eCompanion in the folder marked: “Exploratory Paper Assignment.” This handout basically lays out the format for each body paragraph. Also, there is a student sample essay that explores the issue: Should biotechnology be banned in U.S. sports? All three sources in this paper take the same side of this issue and argue that biotechnology basically destroys honest competition, but they approach and support thei.

In this section, you will learn how to reference the sources of information that you use to write essays or reports. You may feel a bit worried about referencing your written work if you have never had to do it before. However, once you understand the theory behind it and try it out a few times, you will find that it is actually quite easy to do.
English 101Essay Assignment 7 Argumentative EssayTopic an.docxkhanpaulita
English 101Essay Assignment 7: Argumentative Essay
Topic and Structure:
Argumentative Essay – Choose one of two topics provided in these instructions to develop an argumentative essay. You must choose one of the topics listed, or your submission will not be graded.
Option #1: Does Technology Promote Loneliness?
Develop a thesis statement built upon whether or not technology promotes loneliness. You should focus on either one form of hardware or one type of software. For example, you could target cell phones or laptops. If you want to look more into software, you could narrow your discussions to one type of social media or one gaming app. These are just a handful of a vast array of options you could choose.
Develop at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource can assist you in developing the counterargument and refutation). This organization should yield four body paragraphs. Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. The beginning of a sample topic sentence might be, “First, Facebook does not promote loneliness because….” Then, be sure to support that claim with a point or two of researched data, followed by mostly original material that helps to explain how your research supports your claims as well as provides new insights and perspectives. Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that synthesizes the paragraph’s main ideas.
Sample Thesis Statement: Social media, particularly Facebook, does not promote loneliness because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument focus). *Note that a thorough thesis statement will include the counterargument in addition to your own arguments, but be sure to frame your counterargument as the opposition’s opinion so that readers do not think that you are changing your stance.
See The Top Ten Tips for College-Level Writing (Presentation) for more thesis statement assistance.
Use at least three credible sources (the author should be considered an expert on the topic in which he or she writes), such as books, articles, and websites, to support your claims. Include a mix of cited paraphrases, summaries, and quotes in your argumentative research paper. Use MLA format (Tip: You will find useful MLA resources within the course topics, particularly in Topic 9) to create proper parenthetical citations as well as a Works Cited page at the end of your essay. For additional Works Cited assistance visit the OWL Purdue website and use the left navigation menu to locate the type of reference you need.
Option #2: Is Citizen Privacy or National Security More Important?
Develop a thesis statement focused on determining if citizen privacy or national security is more important. You can choose any country or region. Your chosen topic needs to be specific and might address a question like the ones you see in these examples.
Argumentative Essay
This writing assignment involves writing your Argumentative essay. Once you draft your essay and
revise, you may submit it for feedback. The feedback will help you revise the draft so you can submit it
as a final. The final version will be graded.
Option #1: Your Position on Pirated Movies
Develop a
thesis statement
on the topic of pirated movies (piracy hurts the economy by…, society can
prevent movie piracy by…, etc.) and write an argumentative essay. Strive for
at least three strong
arguments
in addition to a
counterargument and refutation
(see counterargument and refutation
details in the Top Ten Tips section). Using
argumentative topic sentences
that include your opinion for
each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. Beginning of a sample topic
sentence: “The first way movie piracy hurts the economy is….” Then be sure to support that claim with
researched data.
Conclude each paragraph
with a sentence that summarizes the paragraph’s main
ideas.
Sample Thesis Statement:
Ideally, a thesis would include the major assignment objectives for the essay, which in this case would
be your claim/opinion, reasons why you have that opinion, and the counter-argument: “Movie piracy is
unethical because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add
counterargument focus).”
Note that a thorough thesis statement will include the
counterargument
in addition to your own
arguments.
See Top Ten Tips section for more thesis statement assistance.
Use
at least three
credible sources
(the author should be considered an expert on the topic in which he
or she writes; try Google Scholar to search), such as books, articles, and websites, to support your thesis.
Include a mix of
cited paraphrases, summaries, and quotes
in your argumentative research paper. Use
MLA format to create proper parenthetical citations as well as a
Works Cited
page at the end of your
essay. For additional Works Cited assistance visit

and use the left navigation menu to locate the type of reference you need.
Option #2: Your Position on Electronic Policing
Develop a
thesis statement
on the topic of electronic policing and anti-plagiarism software and write an
argumentative essay. Your chosen topic needs to be specific and might address a question like the ones
you see in these examples:
•
Should student writers be subject to having their work checked by anti-plagiarism software?
Why or why not?
•
Is anti-plagiarism software an effective deterrent to stealing published work? Why or why not?
•
You may choose another topic regarding electronic policing as well; just be sure that your main
thesis addresses the topic of
electronic policing

Abstract
The abstract is on its own page. The first paragraph of the abstract should not be indented. It is typically 150 to 250 words and summarizes the main points of the paper. It should include your thesis and summarize your main points and results. Do not include quotations here. Define any abbreviations and acronyms you use in the paper here. You might want to write it after you’ve written the rest of your paper, so that it’s easy to summarize.
In academic publishing, writing a good abstract is important, because it is the first, and sometimes only, bit of information your readers get to help them decide whether they should read or buy your article. After this paragraph, there is a page break that forces the beginning of your paper onto its own page: You will want to keep it there.
This Is Your Title: It Should Be Less Than Twelve Words
This is your introduction and thesis paragraph. The introduction should be about five or six sentences and provide some background or context for your topic. Do not use I or you in academic writing. When appropriate, include recent events relating to the topic. For example, if you are writing about cyber warfare, you might mention Russia using cyber-attacks to influence the last US presidential election. Your thesis should be one sentence and outline the main points of the paper.
Literature Review or Background
Summarize and quote the important research on this topic that has gone before you. Define subject-specific vocabulary or related theory. Usually, you want to look at books for background. You might want to use your textbook or an encyclopedia to find the names of researchers or theories that are important to the topic, then, search for those names on the library website. Use keywords when research of your topic in databases (example: cyber warfare or cyber attack) to find related articles and books. Need help? Ask A Librarian.
Anytime you summarize what someone else has said, include the author’s last name and year either in the text or in parentheses at the end. If you quote someone else, include the author’s last name, year, and page number either in the text or in parentheses at the end. If an article has three to five authors, write their last names out the first time, then cite only the first author’s last name followed by “et al.” If an article has six or more authors, include only the first author’s last name followed by “et al.” If the source does not have an author, such as a website, put the name of the article or webpage in parentheses at the end.
The whole point of in-text citations is so your reader can find the correct source in your References, so make sure authors or titles match both in-text and in References. Find out more about in-text citatio ...

Assignment 08
SO245 Social Impact of Technology
Directions:Unless otherwise stated, answer in complete sentences, and be sure to use correct English spelling and grammar. Sources must be cited in APA format. Refer to the "Assignment Format" page for specific format requirements.
Instructions
In your course, turn to Lesson 8. Skim through it to refresh your memory. Next, carefully study and review the section titled “Approaches to Measuring Technological Progress.” Next, relying solely on the material in your course, use your own words in order to write a short comparison and contrast essay that defines and explains three distinct perspectives on the evolution of technology. As you write, imagine you are talking to a friend who has no knowledge of this topic. In short, write the way you speak, using a conversational tone. Also, try to alternate short sentences and longer sentences to make your writing more readable.
Before, during, or after you’ve completed your essay, be sure to create a title and cite yourself as the author. For example:
A Comparison of Three Perspectives on the Evolution of Technology
Heather Jones
Your essay should have 5 paragraphs. Paragraph 1 is your lead paragraph. It will contain an overview of what you have to say in comparing and contrasting the perspectives of Gerhard Lenski, Leslie White, and Alvin Toffler with respect to the evolution of technology.
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4, are your body paragraphs. In your essay, paragraph 2 should describe the perspective of Gerhard Lenski.
In paragraph 3, you’ll write about the perspective of Leslie White.
In paragraph 4, you’ll describe and discuss the perspective of Alvin Toffler.
Paragraph 5 is your summary and conclusion paragraph. Here, you will compare the three perspectives to show how they are, or may be, similar. You’ll contrast the three perspectives to describe how they are different. You will end this process – and your essay – by expressing your view as to which theorist or theorists offer the most useful insights into the evolution of technology.
Mechanics
Your document’s margins should be 1 inch, top, bottom, left, and right. That’s the default option if you use MS Word.
All your copy should be flush left.
For purposes of evaluating your essay, skip a line between each paragraph.
Make sure you use a standard indent for the first sentence of each of your paragraphs. Pressing the tab key one time is a simple way to do that.
It’s permissible to use direct quotes from the lesson. But don’t overdo it. One to three such quotes should be your limit. In any case, be sure to bracket a direct quote with quotation marks. For example: According to Marlowe, “White and Lenski are on the same page.”
Begin by writing a first draft. Then, remembering that writing is rewriting, try and try again to make your prose readable. After you think you’ve composed a final draft, go over your essay again to locate and correct grammar and spelling errors.

Abstract
Abstracts are research tools that can help you readers determine if the scope of your article/essay will help them in their own research. In APA, abstracts are typically 150-250 words in length and provide an evaluative summary of the essay to follow. The personal opinion of the author is strictly prohibited in abstracts. Unlike a body paragraph, the first line of an abstract is not tabbed-in. For many student essays, especially in lower-numbers courses, an abstract will not be required; still, it is good to practice this skill.
Title of Assignment
In APA style, the introduction of the essay should begin here, followed by the body paragraphs. APA is typically a more formal style than most students are accustomed to using in a writing course. For the purposes of this course, the level of formality should be based on the assignment. For example: APA asks that students always write in third person (avoiding words such as I, me, we, our(s), you, your(s), etc). Certain rhetorical modes, however, don’t cater well to third person (narrative and reflection writing are two such examples). In these situations, first person (I, me, we, our(s)) may be, and should be employed; second person (you, your(s)) should be avoided in all academic writing unless an essay is specifically designed to relay instructions (there are few assignments that will employ second person).
Like any essay, students should make sure their essays are formatted with one-inch margins, with their text exclusively in Times New Roman 12-point font, and students should double space their lines. This document can be downloaded and used as a template wherein students may simply replace names, titles, dates, and so on with their own information.
The final page of this document will demonstrate a References page. If a student uses information from any source, that source must be identified within the text and listed on a References page. These citations should be listed in alphabetical order and, opposite to the way a normal paragraph works, the first line should be flush left and each following line should be tabbed in. Though there is really no substitute for a good APA Style Manual, students can refer to a citation generator such as http://www.citationmachine.net/apa/cite-a-book to ensure proper formatting. There are numerous theories that attempt to explain the development and manifestation of psychological disorders. Some researchers hold that certain disorders result from learned behaviors (behavioral theory), while other researchers believe that there is a genetic or biological basis to psychological disorders (medical model), while still others hold that psychological disorders stem from unresolved unconscious conflict (psychoanalytic theory). How would each of these theoretical viewpoints explain anxiety disorders? Does one explain the development and manifestation of anxiety disorders better than the others?

There are multifaceted ethical issues relating to international investments. One aspect relates to human rights. Most Latin American governments have constitutions that mandate health care as a human right, yet some of these countries provide poor health care for the majority of their population.
During the 1980s, the general populace of these countries deteriorated, even though several Latin American countries developed strategies to reposition medical personnel and services to rural areas. Throughout this time, many international donors provided assistance; however they did so with imposed conditions. An example of this constrained assistance was the World Bank, which imposed restrictions that included privatization of health care, as well as required limitations on universal access.
Did the World Bank and other international donors act responsibly and ethically in constraining their humanitarian assistance? Who has the responsibility for the health care of the Latin American people? Is it a reasonable and socially responsible practice to offer international assistance in exchange for an opportunity to shape a country's political and/or social system? Why or why not?

TCO 5. There has been a bumper crop of politicians who have been revealed to be less than upstanding citizens. John Edwards, a former senator who was in the running for the 2008 presidential nomination, and who said family values were at his core, was revealed to have had an affair with a campaign worker, at the same time his wife was battling cancer. Similarly, New York governor Eliot Spitzer, a married, moralizing crusader for laws against sexual tourism, was caught in an escort service "sting", and forced to resign. These are only two of several recent examples of politicians who have celebrity status, and flaunted the social norms of decency.
Apply the course concepts of the
dark side of self-esteem
and
moral hypocrisy
to this type of behavior. What do you conclude about people who behave in such a way? Hint: Explicitly use each concept by name and also give a one sentence definition of it before explaining how the concepts apply to these people.

TCO 6. The Beltway sniper attacks in the Washington D.C. area, in 2002, completely transfixed American consciousness for the three weeks in October, when a pair of armed killers roamed through the Capital region, ambushing and killing 10 people, and wounding three others. As time progressed and law enforcement officials were having little luck in solving the case, tensions and apprehensiveness spread far beyond the area where the killings were concentrated. Even though there was never any hard evidence that the killers were headed in their direction, the citizens of towns and cities a hundred miles away were terrorized by the notion that the killers were about to show up in their communities.
Discuss this with respect to the

that Myers writes about in Chapter 6. Be specific as to what aspects of suggestibility apply to the case.

TCO's 4 and 12. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Cuban Taekwondo athlete Angel Matos fell to the mat, after being hit by his opponent. He became incensed at the referee, who disqualified him for exceeding the one-minute time-out allowed for an injury. Matos angrily disputed the call, physically pushing a judge and then pushing and kicking the referee in the face. He spat on the mat and was escorted out by officials. The World Taekwondo Federation immediately banned Matos for life, and the IOC took away his bronze medal.

Write an Abstract
What is an abstract?
Your initial abstract will a brief, single-paragraph summary of what your Persuasive Argument research paper will be about, including the position you are taking on your topic. The thesis statement will be included in your abstract.
What's included?
As much as possible at this point in your writing, include your paper’s purpose, main points, method, findings, and conclusions. If you have not yet reached a conclusion, nor researched thoroughly, include what you expect will be your conclusion. After your paper is completed, you can always go back and change it or add to it as long as it stays within the word limit.
How long should it be?
The abstract’s length should be a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 250 words; it should be confined within a single paragraph. Unlike in other paragraphs in the paper, the first line of the abstract should
not
be indented.
What are Keywords?
At the end of the abstract, a list of the important words related to the paper are listed. Leave one line of space after the abstract and begin the next line with the word "Keywords" in italics, followed by a colon, and indented a half inch. See page 527 in

Include a mix of
cited paraphrases, summaries, and quotes

John Edwards, a former senator who was in the running for the 2008 presidential nomination, and who said family values were at his core, was revealed to have had an affair with a campaign worker, at the same time his wife was battling cancer. Similarly, New York governor Eliot Spitzer, a married, moralizing crusader for laws against sexual tourism, was caught in an escort service "sting", and forced to resign. These are only two of several recent examples of politicians who have celebrity status, and flaunted the social norms of decency.

Summer 2001
Almost every intellectual claims to have the welfare of humanity, and particularly the
welfare of the poor, at heart: but since no mass murder takes place without its
perpetrators alleging that they are acting for the good of mankind, philanthropic
sentiment can plainly take a multiplicity of forms.
Two great European writers of the nineteenth century, Ivan Turgenev and Karl Marx,
illustrate this diversity with vivid clarity. Both were born in 1818 and died in 1883, and
their lives paralleled each other almost preternaturally in many other respects as well.
They nevertheless came to view human life and suffering in very different, indeed
irreconcilable, ways—through different ends of the telescope, as it were. Turgenev saw
human beings as individuals always endowed with consciousness, character, feelings,
and moral strengths and weaknesses; Marx saw them always as snowflakes in an
avalanche, as instances of general forces, as not yet fully human because utterly
conditioned by their circumstances. Where Turgenev saw men, Marx saw classes of men;
where Turgenev saw people, Marx saw the People. These two ways of looking at the
world persist into our own time and profoundly affect, for better or for worse, the
solutions we propose to our social problems.
The resemblances between the careers of these men begin with their attendance at Berlin
University at overlapping times, where both were deeply affected—even intoxicated—by
the prevailing Hegelianism. As a result, both considered careers as university teachers of
philosophy, but neither ever held a university post. They had many acquaintances in
http://www.city-journal.org/index.html
common in Berlin, including Mikhail Bakunin, the Russian aristocrat who later became a
revolutionary anarchist, the philosopher Bruno Bauer, and the radical poet Georg
Herwegh. They shared a carelessness with money, perhaps because they were both born
into easy circumstances and therefore assumed that money would never be a problem.
Both started their writing careers as romantic poets, though more of Turgenev’s poetry
than Marx’s was published.
Their literary influences and tastes were similar. Each read widely in the Greek and Latin
classics; each could quote Shakespeare in the original. Both learned Spanish in order to
read Calderón. (Turgenev, of course, also learned it to speak the native language of the
great, but unsatisfactory, love of his life, the famous prima donna Pauline Viardot.) The
two men were in Brussels at the outbreak of the 1848 revolution against the July
monarch.

theme throughout this course has been that human and social services.docxsharondabriggs
theme throughout this course has been that human and social services professionals constantly apply theories and processes to address issues and challenges. As a social change agent, leader, and advocate, you should be able to apply relevant theories and processes to implement and support change on a local and global scale. As always, codes of ethics should provide guidance as you attempt to bring about change. As the final step in the development of your strategic plan, you will develop an action plan for each year of the strategic plan. For example, your plan might start off with strategic goals at the local level with plans to take these goals national or international in following years of the strategic plan.
To prepare:
Review the feedback from your Instructor regarding the components of your strategic plan in Weeks 3, 4, and 6–8.
You should make any changes based on the feedback you received. You will include these elements as a whole this week for your final strategic plan.
Finally this week, consider what actions you will take each year of the strategic plan.
The Assignment (15–22 pages):
Guidelines for each section of the Assignment are provided below.
Part I. The Fundamentals (3–4 pages):

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Daily Writing 2.2 DUE OCTOBER 19
Draft a persuasive essay that uses a minimum of 300 words and
at least three paragraphs that argue for or against the thesis
below.
Thesis: Alabama (or wherever you reside) should ban sales and
other distribution of all firearms except for those required by
employment.
Agree or disagree

with the above opinion, but take a clear, logical stand on the
issue. Before forming your own thesis,
click here to read “A Word about the Thesis” posted in
“Handouts and Course Documents.” attach below
2. When forming the thesis (argument, opinion), recall that a good
opinion is always supported by facts.
Write the essay from the first-person point of view of a law
enforcement officer, the first-person point of view of a wildlife
hunter, the first-person point of view of an anti-gun proponent
who despises freedom and the Second Amendment to our
beloved Constitution, or the first-person point of view of a
convicted felon who possesses several automatic weapons, all of
which have been illegally obtained.
Just a reminder for anyone who needs it: When writing from the
first-person point of view of a law enforcement officer, the
voice in your entire essay must be the voice of a law
enforcement officer (or hunter, or anti-gun person, or convicted
felon), and the voice must be especially strong in the
introductory and concluding paragraphs. Do not write about the
voice,
be
the voice. Write from only
one
point of view, not all four.
The language in assignments that require writing from a
particular point of view must conform to the “Checklist for
Essays and Other Writing Assignments.” For example, a dirty
rotten scoundrel would probably use some unsavory language
filled with inappropriate expletives, but if an English
Composition student were writing from the point of view of a
dirty rotten scoundrel, the voice must be that of a dirty rotten
scoundrel, but the writing (usage, grammar, language
mechanics) must be suitable for English Composition classroom
expectations.

Underline the thesis in the first paragraph of the essay. In the
text of the essay and on a Works Cited page, use and cite the
source below and one other online source (MLA format style)
that supports your thesis. The textbook and Blackboard are not
outside sources.
Click here for the Lagman source. attach below
Two sources are required. Make sure that the text of your essay
includes the in-text citations for the Lagman source and the
other credible online source of your choice. The text of your
essay must include a short, direct quotation from each source
not to exceed eight lines (accumulatively).
For additional help with formatting the Works Cited page and
citations, review the model essay and the examples in the
Handouts and Course Documents section. Also see the “How
To” section for examples of citing the Bible and other
variations of multiple authors of one source and multiple
sources with one author.
If the last paragraph of the text of your essay is 2, then the
Works Cited page will begin on Page 3, the page following the
last paragraph of your essay. The page must be titled Works
Cited centered at the top of the page, followed by a list of the
citations. The Works Cited page must be numbered.
DISCUSSION 3
4. Week 2 Formal Essay DUE OCTOBER 23
Read Daniel J. Solove’s “The Nothing-to-Hide Argument,” pp.
734-743. Some students have the eBook edition of the textbook,
and the page numbers are probably different. Search the index
for Solove.
If you still do not have a textbook,
click here and read Chapter 2 only.
Draft a persuasive response (500 words minimum) that
considers the audience and Solove’s point of view. The thesis in
your essay must address the following argument made by
Solove:
Privacy is rarely lost in one fell swoop. It is often eroded over
time, little bits dissolving almost imperceptibly until we finally
begin to notice how much is gone. When the government starts
monitoring the phone numbers people call, many may shrug
their shoulders and say, “Ah, it’s just numbers, that’s all.” Then
the government might start monitoring some phone calls. “It’s
just a few phone calls, nothing more,” people might declare.
The government might install more video cameras in public
places, to which some would respond, “So what? Some more
cameras watching a few more places. No big deal.” The increase
in cameras might ultimately expand to a more elaborate network
of video surveillance. Satellite surveillance might be added, as
well as the tracking of people’s movements. The government
might start analyzing people’s bank records. “It’s just my
deposits and some of the bills I pay—no problem.” The
government then may start combing through credit card records,
then expand to Internet service provider (ISP) records, health
records, e4mployment records, and more. Each step may seem
incremental, but after a while, the government will be watching
and knowing everything about us.
5. Agree or disagree with Solove’s argument, but take a clear
stand.
When forming the thesis and writing the essay, also use one
additional online source to support your opinion. Your second
source cannot be a review of Solove’s essay or his book,
Nothing to Hide: The False Tradeoff between Privacy and
Security
.
Underline the thesis in the first paragraph of your essay. Use
and cite the online Solove source and your addition source. Also
cite both sources with an in-text citation in the text of your
essay and a full citation on the Works Cited page (MLA format
style).
Below is an example of the Solove online citation.
Clarification of Sources: Avoid using sources such as
Blackboard, the textbook, encyclopedias, quotation Websites,
Yahoo Answers, Ask.com, About.com, Wikipedia and other
Wiki sources, social publications such as People Magazine, Jet
Magazine, ehow, other social and “Give-Me-an-Answer”
Websites, and Weblogs (blogs). Instead, do some serious
research. Dictionaries, The Holy Bible, and other reference
sources may be used only in connection with other credible
sources. Avoid using the dictionary as a source unless you are
providing an unusual definition of a word. The same applies to
simply defining a word; assume that your audience already
possesses a brain and a vocabulary.
If you are not sure if your chosen source is credible, contact me.
One question has already been asked about the URL.
6. Q: May I use the word

are more than four lines long, and it gets on my very fragile
nerves to type all of those symbols, numbers, and letters on the
same line.
A: I prefer that the entire URL be used because I will access
