The research investigates the impact of value-added tax (VAT) on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Hargeisa, Somaliland, highlighting issues such as corruption among tax officials and the high operational burden VAT places on these businesses. A study involving 151 participants revealed that SMEs face significant challenges with VAT payments, often leading to financial stress and a risk of business failure. Recommendations include establishing a committee of SMEs to voice their concerns and propose reforms to the tax system, thereby facilitating a more favorable business environment.
