Cytochrome is an electron transferring protein containing a heme group. There are different types of cytochromes which contain different groups attached to the heme. Cytochrome C specifically is attached to the inner mitochondrial membrane and plays a key role in electron transfer as part of the electron transport chain and ATP production. The electron transport chain involves several protein complexes including Complex III which contains cytochromes B and C, and Complex IV or cytochrome C oxidase which uses cytochrome C to shuffle electrons into oxygen molecules.
