Cyrus Mistry is an Irish-Parsi businessman who was selected to be the next Chairman of Tata Sons, taking over from Ratan Tata in December 2012. He is the youngest son of construction magnate Pallonji Mistry and graduated from Imperial College London with a degree in civil engineering. Under his leadership, Shapoorji Pallonji Group expanded significantly in construction and diversified into infrastructure development. He has served on the boards of many Tata companies since 2006 and was chosen as the consensus successor to Ratan Tata due to his experience, family connections, and compatibility with Tata.

Laila and Aloo.
Married to Rohiqa Chagla, the daughter
of lawyer Iqbal Chagla. Together, Mistry and his
wife have two sons.

In the beginning, he undertook simple jobs for
the military and the PWD, constructing
barracks, small public buildings etc.

Mistry is also a founder member of the Construction
Federation of India.
He is a trustee of the Breach Candy Hospital Trust,

He served as a Director of Tata Elxsi Limited,
from September 24, 1990 to October 26, 2009
and was a Director of Tata Power Co. Ltd until
September 18, 2006.
He serves as Chairman of the Board of
Shapoorji Pallonji Group and Afcons
Infrastructure Limited.
He also serves as Director of various companies
including Forvol International Services Ltd,
Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd, Cyrus Investments
Ltd, Shapoorji Pallonji Power Co. Ltd etc.
7. He has been a non-executive director of Forbes
Gokak Limited since June 23, 2003.
He is also a founding member of the Construction
Federation of India.
He is a trustee of the Breach Candy Hospital Trust,
Mumbai.
He is also on the board of Imperial College India
Foundation.
8. Under Cyrus' guidance, Shapoorji Pallonji's
construction business has grown from a turnover of
USD 20 million to approximately USD 1.5billion.
The companies have evolved from pure
construction to now executing projects under
design & build and EPC delivery methodologies,
implementing complex projects in the marine, oil
and gas, rail sectors.
Under Cyrus' stewardship, the companies
registered many firsts in India ²construction of the
tallest residential towers, the longest rail bridge, the
largest dry dock and the largest affordable housing
project.
9. Cyrus was responsible for building the
infrastructure development vertical in the
Shapoorji Pallonji Group starting in 1995 with
a106 MW power project in Tamil Nadu.
Was further responsible the development of the
India's largest biotech park near Hyderabad in
partnership with the Andhra Pradesh
government.
The Infrastructure vertical has also developed
two large road projects totaling an investment
of USD 550 million under his leadership.
10. Cyrus Mistry emerged as the only consensus
choice with the backing of current chairman
Ratan Tata and Pallonji Mistry as Tata Group's
search for a successor entered the final lap.
The 82-year-old tycoon, the largest individual
shareholder in Tata Sons, made a strong pitch
for an insider to be the next chairman.
Ratan Tata is said to have favoured Cyrus
Mistry who is credited with scaling up and
diversifying Shapoorji Pallonji Group, one of
India's most valuable private enterprises.
11. Mistry, often referred to as the Phantom of Bombay
House for his low-profile involvement in the affairs
of Tata Group, is believed to have spoken
forcefully even as the search committee began
interviewing candidates from outside the group.
Several factors are said to have worked in Cyrus
Mistry's favour: his age; the fact that his family holds
the largest single equity block of 18.4% (outside of
the Trusts) in Tata Sons.
The tradition of every chairman of the group so far
being a Parsi; his chemistry with Ratan Tata; his
understated style; strong operational experience
combined with financial acumen; and his Indian-
cum-international outlook.
12. Ratan Tata has for years said that he wanted
someone young, someone ideally in his/her
early-to-mid 40s, and Cyrus fits the bill.
On November 23, 2011, Mistry was named as
the Deputy Chairman as a result of a
unanimous vote of the Tata Sons Board of
Directors and selection committee. He will
begin serving as chairman when Tata retires in
December 2012.
