This document discusses how pairing programmers and testers during development benefits both roles. Pairing helps minimize customer feedback time, prevents defects, defines what "done" means for a task, prevents confusion, and expands the benefits of test-driven development throughout the development cycle. The document was presented by Dawn Cannan and Shannon Prue at the Agile Development Practices West 2011 conference on pairing roles and customer-driven development.

Agile and Scrum are often pitched together as the definitive silver bullet for eliminating pain from software development, but they include their own sets of problems that commonly drag down development teams. Whether an agile team is executing an internal project or doing work for a client, a very similar set of problems begins to afflict all the members of such teams, regardless of their roles. The common root causes of these problems can be quickly identified, and complementary solutions can be easily implemented to ensure a happy team that continues to deliver high-quality work.
The document discusses lessons learned from implementing lean and agile approaches in three different products or organizations: Microsoft Windows CE.Net Platform Builder, Adobe Revel, and Spotify. For each product, both positive and negative lessons are outlined, such as isolating the effort as an experiment and being careful of early success for Windows, and balancing autonomy and collaboration for Spotify.

Change How You Do Product - by Tal Ben-Simon (ProductX 2018)Tal Ben-Simon
Presented on stage at the "ProductX 2018" conference.
We, product people, are usually trying to change or redesign our product.
But there’s a point in time, when you need to reorganize the structure and redefine the workflow of your Product-R&D teams and potentially the entire company.
- Why and when to make a change?
- How should this sensitive change be made?
- What is the product manager’s role in leading this change?
I will share the story of the profound changes (which are still being) made in eToro, a fast growing FinTech startup with more than 500 employees…

Many people in Agile and IT talk about Toyota Kata, but it seems very few have tried it out for real at any scale or duration and actual cases are far between. In this presentation I will share my last 4 years of experience with Toyota Kata and especially the job of scaling it across all layers of a 700 people IT organization. How does it translate to a context where the flow of value is counted in days and not seconds? Where did we fail, what adaptions were made, what results did we achieve and why is it both more powerful and more difficult than any of us believed?

Anastasya Razryadova - Difficulties in building Pre-sale as a Service and why...Lviv Startup Club
Presales as a Service provides tips to build things better by treating presales as a project. It recommends estimating work, scaling the team by involving experts and mentoring them, and analyzing work by proposing discoveries and collecting proposals and case studies. It also stresses the importance of valuing experience, rewarding the team, bringing retrospectives in, helping projects start by supporting staffing and sprint 0, and being responsible by treating presales as one's own dream project.
The document proposes a new product development process to provide clarity on what is being built, predictability on timing, and feedback. It involves organizing work into Epics, Stories, bugs, and projects tracked in Jira. Engineers would work in sprints to develop stories and fixes identified by PMs, with weekly bug reviews and monthly idea reviews providing voice for others. Work would flow through statuses in Jira as it is developed, tested, and released. Sprints would be managed on a scrum board and features not requiring major releases could be released at sprint end, while others would be quarterly capital releases not tied to sprints.
This document outlines a performance evaluation framework for testers. It defines attributes of good testers, types of metrics to measure performance, and a quality review process. Performance is measured both quantitatively using metrics like bugs found and test cases run, and qualitatively through reviews of bug and test case quality. Testers are evaluated based on their role, with defined metrics for developers, regression engineers, tools engineers and system testers.

Iasi code camp 12 october 2013 corneliu rimboiu - bridging java and .netCodecamp Romania
The document summarizes a presentation about bridging Java and .NET through specification by example. It discusses the vision, challenges of specification by example, how it was implemented, and results. Key enablers included communication, PRISM for .NET and OSGi for Java architectures, estimation through scenarios, QA through auditing, and a phased production path. Lessons included initially pressure but later rewards, and consultants moving on after product handoff.
The document discusses the importance of being agile over creating perfect documentation upfront. It emphasizes that planning, development, and testing should be iterative processes. Automation, quality, and having fun with testing are important parts of an agile approach. The document promotes delivering working software in short cycles over attempting to make perfect documentation before starting work.
Agile Gurugram 2019 Conferecne | A "Quality" Debate - Rethinking the mindset ...AgileNetwork
Session Title : A "Quality" Debate - Rethinking the mindset for non-negotiable Quality in Software Products
Session Overview : One of the key reasons for embracing agility is faster feedback which helps improve the perceived quality of a software product. And every team is focused towards delivering quality, no one wakes up in the morning with an idea to introduce defects, we naturally ideate to solve problems. Unknowingly though, dysfunctions always creep in and identifying a dysfunction is extremely difficult especially when you are a part of the dysfunction.
In this 45 min talk, discussion is about the importance of quality and how it's no longer negotiable even if Project Management principles tell us otherwise. Stories from past experience, and from organisations ranging from GM to Mumbai Dabbawalas that have embraced the "Quality is not Negotiable" principle and seen the difference.
I present the context of defect severity and how these may create an illusion of quality; how accountability of a single person (e.g.: Product Owner) may result in a "Lack of Commitment" dysfunction; and how cost is not really proportional to quality especially when it comes to delivering virtual products and services related to it.

Fuel Good 2018: Upgrades Made Easy: The Canadian Museum of HistorySparkrock
The Canadian Museum of History upgraded their NAV and SharePoint systems without major issues by carefully planning and testing the project. They designed a new technical infrastructure, trained users, and conducted multiple cycles of user acceptance testing and remediation over several months. While there were inevitable bugs found during testing, taking the time for thorough preparation and testing helped ensure the upgrades went live smoothly without significant problems.
This document discusses the relationship between Agile development practices and key performance indicators (KPIs). It notes that Agile focuses on early delivery of business value, while KPIs are typically used to measure performance. However, directly applying traditional KPIs like lines of code or story points completed can incentivize behaviors that go against Agile principles. Instead, it recommends measuring outcomes like defects, code quality, release frequency and stability as a better way to support Agile teams. The key message is that teams should not work to achieve KPIs but rather KPIs should help teams by reflecting their actual performance.
This document contains Ken DeLong's work history, activities, favorite books, strengths, and views on software engineering best practices. It emphasizes hiring the best engineers, optimizing for learning, reducing waste, attention to quality, and avoiding technical and cultural debt.

Software development is shifting to Agile development practices due to the speed of change within organizations, and therefore creating the demand for such shifts. These same compelling reasons are pushing learning groups to challenge their current methodologies and become more adaptive. This can’t be accomplished without a Performance Support strategy, methodology, and technology.
Our charge is not only to keep up with Agile software development, but to keep up with the adaptive performance requirements of organizations to be “Agile": to grow, change, and innovate at or above the speed of their markets – in other words, the need to: “learn at the speed of change.”
Our top 10 Metrics reveal the most fundamental data points Agile methodology requires to work effectively, and will put you on the highly targeted path to successful implementation of your Agile processes.

Jan de Vries - How to convince your boss that it is DevOps that he wantsAgile Lietuva
- We all know that we could implement DevOps a lot faster if we only would have commitment from our boss. We all know that there is a shiny business case for almost every DevOps implementation
- And we all know that the whole company will reap the benefits regarding speed, agility and stability once we implemented DevOps. Actually, it provides good, fast and cheap at the same time. So, what are we waiting for? What is your boss waiting for? What is C-level waiting for?
- That’s something we will do research on in this workshop. We will also share our research on this from the recent past.
- The workshop starts with a presentation about 7 practices that a company should adopt to be able to apply DevOps.
- The technique that we use is called Appreciative Inquiry. To tackle a problem, it discovers the best practices that work, the reason they work and how these combined practices can be used to avoid the problem ahead and create a strategic change. The aim is to build – or even rebuild – organizations around what works, rather than trying to fix what doesn’t.
- So we want to know what your boss is afraid of and what you have already tried to convince him that he is better off with DevOps. You will leave the workshop with the combined Appreciative Inquiry insights of all the attendees
This document discusses five important process characteristics that can help improve companies:
1. Flow efficiency measures the percentage of time that work is adding value for customers. Measuring flow efficiency can help identify areas of waste.
2. Arrival rate refers to the number of new work items entering the system per unit of time. Understanding arrival rates and patterns is important for balancing demand with capacity.
3. Option discard rate is the percentage of potential work that is discarded or rejected before being started. High option discard rates may indicate too many low-value options are being explored.
4. Utilization measures the percentage of time that resources are working versus waiting. Both too high and too low utilization can negatively impact lead times
The document outlines the agenda for a three day offsite meeting for an engineering team. Day 1 focuses on introductions, goals for the offsite, an engineering organizational review and feedback. Day 2 covers operations topics like onboarding/offboarding processes, project management and agile practices. Day 3 discusses the engineering organization vision for the next 1-3 years, including improving agile practices, career development and technology roadmaps.

Installing CPAN modules and managing their dependencies has got much easier over recent years thanks to tools like cpanm. But what about the DarkPAN, i.e. all the code that *isn't* on CPAN?
In this talk we will look at how to build our own private CPAN, upload our own DarkPAN modules, and easily mix private and public dependencies.
From this we will build cross-platform installation packages which can be used on any system with Perl installed (no external dependencies or even Internet access required).
Presented at the YAPC::Europe 2012 conference in Frankfurt, Germany.
