PROJECTS (Listed most recent first)
1. Nanoteq project: Review software development practices and procedures.
Implemented a development flow closer to TDD (Test driven development)
practices, implemented a CI (Continuous integration) server, created a functional /
acceptance test framework alongside C++ based unit testing. Re-introduced formal
code review sessions.
2. Nanoteq project: Secure file distribution and management center.
FreeBSD based server solution managing the various voice and fax products. SIP
VOIP server functionality coupled with custom management infrastructure on a
secure platform. Non-disclosure applies.
3. Nanoteq project: Secure PSTN voice and fax interpreter.
PSTN based voice and fax solution with dedicated cryptographic module.
Multinational PSTN support, with V.32/V.34 and group 3 and group 4 (T.4)
operation. Multinational clients. Non-disclosure applies.
4. Nanoteq project: Secure GSM phone.
Custom developed GSM handset with dedicated cryptographic module. Hardware
and software was developed in-house ensuring security with no possibility of
hidden backdoors. Voice over IP and Instant messaging functionality. Multinational
clients. Non-disclosure applies.
5. Inteletrack project: Advanced train brake line monitoring system.
The continuation of the project (see 6) now included train completeness detection
by comparing the front and rear GPS positions. Other improvements included
VSWR and RSSI monitoring of the radio channel, full logging of system operations,
GPRS reporting of the units and various other improvements. The system was
developed and installed successfully and is set to replace the currently used
system of the last 20 years in Transnet Freight Rail.
6. Inteletrack project: Track warrant system for Malaysia railroads.
6. Curriculum Vitae: Kobus Coetzee (August 2011) Page 6
The project goal was to develop a GPS train position monitoring system, and text
communication for the train driver. The communications link was the Nokia Tetra
radio communications network. The project was completed but awaits final
commissioning since it coincided with the movement and upgrade of the majority of
the railways. A prototype system was installed and demonstrated to the client.
7. Inteletrack project: Train brake line monitoring system.
The project goal was to monitor the train brake line pressure, and communicate
this information to the train driver via a radio communications link up to a distance
of 2 km. The project was set back by 2 months with the incorrect placement of the
micro controller IC (the 5V model was ordered instead of the 3.3V model). The
project was a success and lead to the further evolution of this product line (see 2).
8. Inteletrack project: GSM and Satellite (Iridium) communications box.
The project goal was to provide train drivers a reliable and tamper resistant
communications medium with the train control center. I inherited this project. Initial
study of the Iridium system was not done sufficiently, with the result that the
satellite communications side suffered from poor reliability. The project was still
deemed a success and the client is still using this product in Malawi as well as in
Mozambique.
9. Final year project: Infrared pupil detection as a computer peripheral input.
The project was met with mixed success. There was a setback when the
development board short circuited a week before final examination, with the result
of re-examination.
