Computer Adaptive Tests
& Performance Tasks
● Computer Adaptive Tests – Based on student responses,
the computer program adjusts the difficulty of
questions throughout the assessment
● Performance Tasks –- Measure a student’s ability to
integrate knowledge and skills across multiple
standards. Performance Tasks follow the classroom
activity.
Directions for Administration
● A copy of the “DFA” will be provided to you.
● Read & review them before testing.
● Just as you would read the Directions for Administration
for CST or CAHSEE, you will read these to students.
Accessing the testing interface & Logging In
● CAASPP Website
● You can Google “CAASPP” or go to http://www.caaspp.org/
● Bookmark it now - Click the star on Google Chrome
Log In Screen
Selecting the Test to Give
● After logging in, select the appropriate test to give from
the test selection menu.
Selecting the correct test to give
The Session ID
● When you begin a testing session a unique “session ID.”
● Unique for every session
● Creates a link between testing admin and testing student.
● Needs to be displayed for all students to see
● If the testing administrator logs out, a new “session ID” is required
and students will have to log back in.
Student Approvals
● Once a student enters the “session ID” they must be approved to begin their
testing session.
● Students are able to select the test which the testing admin has selected
● As students request approval they will show up in the Approvals column. The
site auto updates every minute. Select the “Refresh now” button to
immediately update.
● The Student Approvals table is available in the top right of the screen.
Student Approvals
● Once a student logs in they will be placed in “awaiting
approval.”
● Click on approvals and the “Approvals and Student Testing
Setting window will appear.

● Review the student's testing selections to ensure they have selected the correct
test.
● 3 Options:
a. Approve
b. Approve All
c. Deny – If they selected the wrong test

What Students Will Need
● Students will need the following information to login:
● State SSID: CA followed by a hyphen and the SSID Number:
● First Name: Student's legal first name as spelled in the California
Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS)
● Session ID: Test Administrator Generated Session ID:
● This information will be provided to you for your students.
Test Layout for Students
● 1. Banner – Testing Information
● 2. Question Drop Down
● 3. Help & Volume Control
● 4. Testing Tools – Embedded Tools & Test Navigation
● 5. Test item
● 6. Context Menu – Text to speech, highlighter, mark for review etc.
Students - Secure Browser
● Students do not log into the chromebooks as they typically do, they must
open the secure browser.
○ Open the Chromebook
○ Press the power button
○ Click on the bottom left of the screen to open the secure browser
and access the CAASPP login screen.
Students – Ending a Segment
● When students reach the end of the segment they can
review all questions from the segment. Once they
submit they cannot go back and review.
Students – Ending A Test
● After students have completed all items on the test the
“end test button” will appear in the upper navigation
bar.
● Students will need to click and verify if they would like
to end their test.
Let’s Practice - As a Student
● Go to: http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html
● Select the button on the right, “Student Interface & Training
Tests.”
● Keep “Guest User”checked in the top box.
● Uncheck “Guest Session” in the second box and enter the Session
ID.
Testing Rules
Basic Test Rules
● Students must answer all test items on a page before
going to the next page. Some pages contain multiple
items. Students may need to use scrollbars to view all
content on a page.
● Students may mark (flag) items for review and use the
Questions drop-down list to easily return to those items,
provided the test has not been paused for more than 20
minutes
● For tests that contain multiple segments, students may
not return to a segment after it has been completed.
Testing Administrator Rules
● TA’s cannot help students use the tools on the testing
screen or determine what is the best tool to use.
● TA’s cannot help students answer the questions, they
can only refer a student to re-read the question to
determine what it is asking for.
● TA’s cannot login for students but they can assist in
helping students to login or determine why they are
having trouble logging in.
Stopping a Session & Logging Off
● Stopping a session will end the session & automatically
pause all students tests.
● The Students will be logged off automatically.
● Student tests can be resumed, test sessions cannot.
● Testing administrators should exit or logout of the TA
Interface only after stopping the test session.
Regardless of when or how users log off or navigate
away from the TA Interface, student data will not be
lost.
Performance Task
● The classroom activity must occur prior to students
taking the performance task.
● Content from the classroom activity is not to be
available to students.
● Student notes from the Classroom Activity are not to be
used or accessible during the PT.
● Student notes must be collected proceeding the PT and
stored in a secure location until securely shredded.
Computer Adaptive Test - Pause Rules
● Students may pause their Computer Adaptive Test however they should raise
their hand and ask you first.
● If the CAT is paused for less than 20 minutes:
● Student can return to any item he or she has answered within a segment
● If the CAT is paused for more than 20 minutes:
● Student will be returned to the last page with unanswered items/ If it
has both answered and unanswered items on the page they can change
any answers on that page.
● Test Timeout (Inactivity)
● As a security measure, students are automatically logged off after 30
minutes of test inactivity. This timeout also results in the test being
paused automatically.
Troubleshooting
● Closing the Browser/Unintentional Exit
● Session will remain open
● Navigate back to the TA Interface
● Enter Session ID In the “Session ID Prompt”
● Test Session Timeout / Automatic Logoff
● If you are inactive for 30 minutes you will be logged off and the
current session will be paused.
● You must restart a new session & All students must re enter.
Troubleshooting – Student Login
● Student ID Error
● Check Login Information & Watch Student Enter It
● Session ID Does not Exist
● Check ID Being Entered
● Check You Are Using Live Site
● Watch Student Enter Information
● The Testing Session is Closed
● Ensure the Session ID is Correct
● Verify Session is Open
● The student is not associated with the school.
● Contact Testing Coordinator on Site

Computer Adaptive Tests & Performance Tasks ● Computer Adaptive Tests – Based on student responses, the computer program adjusts the difficulty of questions throughout the assessment ● Performance Tasks –- Measure a student’s ability to integrate knowledge and skills across multiple standards. Performance Tasks follow the classroom activity.
  • 6. Directions for Administration ● A copy of the “DFA” will be provided to you. ● Read & review them before testing. ● Just as you would read the Directions for Administration for CST or CAHSEE, you will read these to students.
  • 7. Accessing the testing interface & Logging In ● CAASPP Website ● You can Google “CAASPP” or go to http://www.caaspp.org/ ● Bookmark it now - Click the star on Google Chrome
  • 9. Selecting the Test to Give ● After logging in, select the appropriate test to give from the test selection menu.

The Session ID ● When you begin a testing session a unique “session ID.” ● Unique for every session ● Creates a link between testing admin and testing student. ● Needs to be displayed for all students to see ● If the testing administrator logs out, a new “session ID” is required and students will have to log back in.
  • 12. Student Approvals ● Once a student enters the “session ID” they must be approved to begin their testing session. ● Students are able to select the test which the testing admin has selected ● As students request approval they will show up in the Approvals column. The site auto updates every minute. Select the “Refresh now” button to immediately update. ● The Student Approvals table is available in the top right of the screen.
  • 13. Student Approvals ● Once a student logs in they will be placed in “awaiting approval.” ● Click on approvals and the “Approvals and Student Testing Setting window will appear.
  • 14. Student Approvals ● Review the student's testing selections to ensure they have selected the correct test. ● 3 Options: a. Approve b. Approve All c. Deny – If they selected the wrong test b a. C

What Students Will Need ● Students will need the following information to login: ● State SSID: CA followed by a hyphen and the SSID Number: ● First Name: Student's legal first name as spelled in the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS) ● Session ID: Test Administrator Generated Session ID: ● This information will be provided to you for your students.

  • 19. Students - Secure Browser ● Students do not log into the chromebooks as they typically do, they must open the secure browser. ○ Open the Chromebook ○ Press the power button ○ Click on the bottom left of the screen to open the secure browser and access the CAASPP login screen.
  • 20. Students – Ending a Segment ● When students reach the end of the segment they can review all questions from the segment. Once they submit they cannot go back and review.
  • 21. Students – Ending A Test ● After students have completed all items on the test the “end test button” will appear in the upper navigation bar. ● Students will need to click and verify if they would like to end their test.
  • 22. Let’s Practice - As a Student ● Go to: http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html ● Select the button on the right, “Student Interface & Training Tests.” ● Keep “Guest User”checked in the top box. ● Uncheck “Guest Session” in the second box and enter the Session ID.
  • 24. Basic Test Rules ● Students must answer all test items on a page before going to the next page. Some pages contain multiple items. Students may need to use scrollbars to view all content on a page. ● Students may mark (flag) items for review and use the Questions drop-down list to easily return to those items, provided the test has not been paused for more than 20 minutes ● For tests that contain multiple segments, students may not return to a segment after it has been completed.

Testing Administrator Rules ● TA’s cannot help students use the tools on the testing screen or determine what is the best tool to use. ● TA’s cannot help students answer the questions, they can only refer a student to re-read the question to determine what it is asking for. ● TA’s cannot login for students but they can assist in helping students to login or determine why they are having trouble logging in.
  • 26. Stopping a Session & Logging Off ● Stopping a session will end the session & automatically pause all students tests. ● The Students will be logged off automatically. ● Student tests can be resumed, test sessions cannot. ● Testing administrators should exit or logout of the TA Interface only after stopping the test session. Regardless of when or how users log off or navigate away from the TA Interface, student data will not be lost.
  • 27. Performance Task ● The classroom activity must occur prior to students taking the performance task. ● Content from the classroom activity is not to be available to students. ● Student notes from the Classroom Activity are not to be used or accessible during the PT. ● Student notes must be collected proceeding the PT and stored in a secure location until securely shredded.
  • 28. Computer Adaptive Test - Pause Rules ● Students may pause their Computer Adaptive Test however they should raise their hand and ask you first. ● If the CAT is paused for less than 20 minutes: ● Student can return to any item he or she has answered within a segment ● If the CAT is paused for more than 20 minutes: ● Student will be returned to the last page with unanswered items/ If it has both answered and unanswered items on the page they can change any answers on that page. ● Test Timeout (Inactivity) ● As a security measure, students are automatically logged off after 30 minutes of test inactivity. This timeout also results in the test being paused automatically.

Troubleshooting ● Closing the Browser/Unintentional Exit ● Session will remain open ● Navigate back to the TA Interface ● Enter Session ID In the “Session ID Prompt” ● Test Session Timeout / Automatic Logoff ● If you are inactive for 30 minutes you will be logged off and the current session will be paused. ● You must restart a new session & All students must re enter.
  • 30. Troubleshooting – Student Login ● Student ID Error ● Check Login Information & Watch Student Enter It ● Session ID Does not Exist ● Check ID Being Entered ● Check You Are Using Live Site ● Watch Student Enter Information ● The Testing Session is Closed ● Ensure the Session ID is Correct ● Verify Session is Open ● The student is not associated with the school. ● Contact Testing Coordinator on Site
