POSITION APPLIED FOR: Anything in the Rio Rancho / Albuquerque area
QUALIFICATIONS
Two year qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with distinctions
BS in Physics & Materials Science, Advanced Diploma in Computer Science
Full clean driving license
I Hold Security Clearance and clearance on anti terrorism checks (UK)
I am a US citizen and a New Mexico resident
Trained task supervisor - usually a team of 2 or 3
Qualified to level 2 in Health and Safety at work, and Managing Safely and in Team Leading
Qualified to level 3 in Electrical Installations - 17th
edition
HANDS ON EXPERIENCE
Electrical fault finding and repair throughout four building complex, included heating, lighting, ventilation
security camera and every piece of equipment within that area.
I used BMS to check for faults in heating and ventilating system.
Rebalanced extract air flow rates to correct pressure differentials in filtered air systems.
High currents (515 Amps) and high voltages (15 kV)
Built and installed box providing additional controls to coil winder, cyclotron and other projects.
4 years building & testing superconducting electromagnet body scanner main magnets (515 Amps)
Highly varied work including repairing a large expensive machine (RM2) using sets of schematic drawings.
I read and created schematic diagrams, logic diagrams both gates and logic blocks, and timing diagrams.
I also did a lot of routine work making and repairing cables and maintained safety records on all portable
electrical equipment in my area.
Integration testing of non sparking vault room grab and controller at manufacturer's site.
I designed analog circuits for converting temperature into voltage and moisture into voltage, and 4 - 20 mA
outputs and digital to 0 to 500 V outputs.
Trouble shooting of digital circuits (timing problems and repairs).
Schematic and PCB layout CAD - 1 years experience
PLC code fixes in a large program, I have also written small ladder logic programs
I used PSPICE circuit emulator to design an AC log amplifier used in a moisture measurement instrument.
I set up and used data loggers, archived & presented the data to the relevant authorities
Experienced with hazardous chemicals and radioactive substances
I have cryogenic experience with liquid nitrogen
Repair of radiation tolerant cables with brittle insulation including very fine camera cables
Trouble shooting of a radiation tolerant camera and servo mechanism.
I removed the RF interference affecting a servo motor system.
Experience with materials including metals, ceramics, glasses, composites and polymers
Crane operator and occasional fork lift operator
I determined plateaus and calibrated photo multipliers.
Involved in treatment, storage and monitoring of nuclear waste
As well as checking the electrics I also produced the gamma radiation data for the WEP processing line
I also calibrated load cells, flow meters, pressure sensors and humidity probes.
INSTRUMENTS I HAVE USED
I have used workshop equipment – saws, files, cutters, automatic spot welder, grinders, vernier callipers &
micrometers and a microscope with graticule.
I have used electronic and manual laboratory scales, Electron & optical microscopes, thermal expansion
measurements using LVDT rig, scanning calorimeter, flux gate & Hall magnetometers, storage
oscilloscopes and multimeters and current clamps, time-domain reflectometer, spectrum analyser, Geiger &
scintillation counters, He-3 neutron proportional counter, high purity germanium gamma spectrometer.
PC
Intermediate level in Excel, regular user of Word and Open Office Text and Spreadsheet, user of several
email systems and search engines, Internet and Intranet applications, experienced user of several different
databases and remote sensing/logging software
GENERAL
I also absorb knowledge of engineering equipment both overall functional understanding and at all levels
down to component level analog, digital, microcontroller or PLC. I have good eye sight and hearing and
can lift 50 lbs. I have often been on my feet for nearly all of the 12 hour shifts.
EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
I took early retirement from RSRL to move self and son to USA, bought a house, etc. Now completely
ready for work. I have a sufficiently varied background in technology to know I am competent and
interested in all fields of technology with an electrical, electronic or instrumentation content.
May 2009 to April 30 2014
United Kingdom Atomic Energy Agency which became Research Sites Restoration Limited
My core role was electrician but with approval I helped with other tasks. Principally I helped the badly
overworked Waste Officer by taking over monitoring and reporting radioactive gas discharges. I also filled
in for absent staff in production and helped out elsewhere as needed after gaining approval, which included
the ventilation and filtration systems and all associated instrumentation.
My core task was to keep the large PLC-controlled machine (RM2) used for the recovery of waste cans
functioning, and to keep the Head End Cells working and to repair and maintain all other electrical
equipment.
I was also responsible for the electrical safety checks on all moveable electrical equipment and the back up
lighting in the four buildings of our complex and for the tritium monitors on alternate weeks.
I also improved documentation for the Vault Store humidity logger, radon monitors, the Head End Cells
interlock testing, electrical safety and back up lighting checks and corrected the equipment wiring diagrams
for the entire radioactive waste encapsulation plant.
May 2004 – May 31 2008
Siemens Magnet Technology (011 44 1865 880880)
I worked in three departments in succession on different stages of super conducting magnet production.
In the process I learned the details of superconducting magnet construction and the basics of magnetic
resonance imaging.
I made the first suggestion at the start of the suggestions scheme and had two others still in progress when I
left. I covered Health and Safety and 5 S (tidiness and tool & materials organisation) for my section. The
coil winding machine I used was partly PLC controlled and partly manual.
Child support payments forced me to leave SMT accepting a good redundancy package. I then took a
holiday and applied for work, the RSRL post had a lengthy medical and security clearance process.
Previous employment: Protimeter - humidity and moisture measuring equipment manufacture and
calibration – bought by GE and moved to China. I did some subsequent work building test equipment.
Condition Monitoring – temperature and vibration machinery monitors I reached the position of Hardware
Design Engineer - bought by Entec and moved to Cincinnati, now part of Rockwell.
Field Service – carried out diagnosis and repairs to 70 in-store UPS systems.
Contracting – various jobs including cyclotron technician for Oxford Instruments.
Danica Power Supplies – I was involved in test, repair and assembly of switched-mode power supply
manufacture – our site was closed due to quality problems.
