United Kingdom Atomic Energy Agency initially then site was transferred to Research Sites Restoration
Limited
My core role was electrician but with approval I helped with other tasks. I volunteered to help the badly
overworked Waste Officer by taking over monitoring and reporting radioactive gas discharges and
calibration of the equipment. I also filled in for absent staff in production and helped out elsewhere as
needed after gaining approval, which included the ventilation and filtration systems and all associated
instrumentation.
My core task was to keep the large PLC-controlled machine (RM2) used for the recovery of waste cans
functioning, and to keep the Head End Cells working and to repair and maintain all other electrical
equipment in the complex.
I was also responsible for the electrical safety checks on all moveable electrical equipment and the back up
lighting in the four buildings of our complex. Key to my success in all compliance was that I created forms
to ensure I carried out each stage of each complex task consistently.
Much of the work was complex and most was done by small groups of workers who reminded each other if
they forgot a step in the task. I was generally the only one doing the work I did so had to find another
method and that was sophisticated type of checklist where I entered data at each stage to ensure I could
verify every step.
2. I also improved documentation for the Vault Store humidity logger, radon monitors, the Head End Cells
interlock testing, electrical safety and back up lighting checks and corrected the equipment wiring diagrams
for the entire radioactive waste encapsulation plant.
I took early retirement from RSRL to move self and son to USA, bought a house, car, passed the Mature
Driver Training Course and learned more PLC programming for my own interest. I have a sufficiently
varied background in technology to know I am competent and interested in all fields of technology with an
electrical, electronic or instrumentation content. I like to be physically mobile and to work around people
so decided to work in retail.

Siemens Magnet Technology (011 44 1865 880880 ask for HR)
I worked in three departments in succession on different stages of super conducting magnet production. I
was transferred to a shift that was short of staff because I was the only person on my shift who got along
with the shift manager. I enjoyed the work there greatly and they were a good bunch to work with.
I made the first suggestion at the start of the suggestions scheme and had two others in progress when I left.
For over a year I covered Health and Safety and 5 S (tidiness and organisation) for my section.
Child support payments forced me to leave SMT accepting a good redundancy package. I then took a
holiday and applied for work, the RSRL electrician post had a very lengthy security clearance process.
