Director of Civic Learning and Engagement, Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, 2015-
2016.
Responsible for working with the public colleges and universities in Massachusetts under the
oversight of the Board of Higher Education to help them reach the Board’s goal of involving
every undergraduate in public higher education in civic learning. Worked with campuses to help
them identify, develop, and report on courses across the curriculum that have a substantial focus
on civic learning. Guided national teams to develop tools to assess student learning outcomes for
Civic Knowledge and Civic Values. Worked with K-12 system to help coordinate civic learning
across K-12 and higher education.
Senior Lecturer and Director, Civic Engagement and Service-Learning (CESL), University of
Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, 2011-2016 (promoted to Senior Lecturer II in 2015).
Responsible for promoting and supporting civic engagement and service-learning across the
UMass campus. Oversaw 8 full-time or part-time staff and graduate assistants, 4 part-time
faculty, and 7 undergraduate workers. Directed two-year Service-Learning (SL) leadership
development program (Citizen Scholars Program) and oversaw first-year Residential Academic
Program (IMPACT!), other SL courses, the Civic Engagement and Public Service certificate
program, and the individualized Civic Engagement major track. Developed faculty capacity to
teach SL. Supported other UMass Amherst SL programs and coordinated with SL faculty and
programs throughout the UMass system and the Five Colleges. Guided the development of three
strategic plans for service-learning, and from 2013 to 2015 worked with the UMass Joint Task
Force on Strategic Oversight to build community engagement as a central element of the UMass
strategic plan. Sought and oversaw external grants. Deepened partnerships with community
organizations. Represented UMass SL to external stakeholders. Taught SL courses as needed.

Responsible for promoting and supporting service-learning within the 3,300-student Honors
College. Supervised 7 staff and 3 faculty. Oversaw first-year Residential Academic Program
(IMPACT!), two-year SL leadership development program (Citizen Scholars Program), and other
SL courses, and Honors tracks in the proposed Civic Engagement and Public Service certificate
program and the individualized Civic Engagement major. Developed faculty capacity to teach SL.
Coordinated with other UMass SL programs and faculty on the Amherst campus and throughout
the UMass system, and with Five College community-based learning programs. Sought and
coordinated external grants. Deepened partnerships with community organizations. Taught

Dissertation examined American political culture during the Vietnam era through an interview study of Vietnam veterans. Responsible for working with the public colleges and universities in Massachusetts under the oversight of the Board of Higher Education to help them reach the Board’s goal of involving every undergraduate in public higher education in civic learning. Worked with campuses to help them identify, develop, and report on courses across the curriculum that have a substantial focus on civic learning. Guided national teams to develop tools to assess student learning outcomes for Civic Knowledge and Civic Values. Worked with K-12 system to help coordinate civic learning across K-12 and higher education. Senior Lecturer and Director, Civic Engagement and Service-Learning (CESL), University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, 2011-2016 (promoted to Senior Lecturer II in 2015). Responsible for promoting and supporting civic engagement and service-learning across the UMass campus.
