When first used by the Tudors five hundred years ago, shutters were functional and provided protection from the elements. Window width then dictated whether they were installed on the inside or outside. As time and technology passed, they became less functional and were used less. They became popular again as the 21st century approached when interest in Victorian décor resurged and they are now one of the most popular window treatments and decorative elements.
