ANALYSIS PROJECT:
 “Structural analysis for passenger car Exhaust system using F.E.A (Finite -
Element Approach)”
Description: This project aims to evaluate the structural integrity of passenger car exhaust
system components by Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Simulation. Finite element
simulation are carried out and the results are explained for the typical exhaust system
components considering the structural loads such as engine vibration loading, providing
ground road loads. The issues associated with the exhaust system components such as
muffler-pipe system, brackets and hanger designs are analyzed. Detailed analysis of
exhaust system components is carried out. Use of Finite Element Method (FEM) enables to
assure the structural integrity of the exhaust system and also contribute to better
understanding of the system behavior in the various operating conditions and evaluation of
structural strength. Accurate finite element model must be generated in order to predict the system
structural behavior and to allow fast optimization processes.
Finite element modeling is carried out for Hyundai i10 passenger
car exhaust system using Altair's pre-processing tool Hypermesh 13.0 Static analysis is performed
by using Msc Nastran for exhaust components to determine the high stress region, and also the
maximum displacement and reaction forces are observed at the bracket and hanger locations. The
results are viewed through Altair's post-processing tool HyperView. Modal analysis is carried out to
determine the structural behavior of the exhaust system. Displacements are found at accelerometer
placing locations under dynamic loading by carrying Modal frequency response analysis.
The natural frequency of the exhaust system which obtained from the Modal analysis is compared
with the experimental results. The results obtained assure the structural integrity of the exhaust
system and also contribute to a better understanding of this system behavior and its structural
strength. In numerical simulation, experimental input parameters are simply applied and model
properties can be easily modified giving accurate results and leading to a fast solution.
1. Static 1G Analysis of Exhaust System:
When the engine is running and the vehicle is idle, the exhaust system is facing
1Gravity in Z-direction. The behavior of exhaust system under 1G was studied and the
displacements at hanger locations are obtained. All degrees of freedom at hanger
locations are constrained using SPC entry and gravity load is applied GRAV entry.
Load: GRAV Scale factor 9.81, x=0 y=0 z=1.
BCs: All DOFs are constrained at Hanger Locations.
Tools Used: ABAQUS, HYPERVIEW
2. Normal Mode Analysis of Exhaust System:
The Normal mode analysis is carried out to study the relative dynamic response of
exhaust system and to make sure there are no unconnected parts exists in the
assembly. The natural frequencies within the given frequency range are computed
using solution sequence in Abaqus solver.
EIGRL card is used to request the natural frequencies within the given frequency
range. All the natural frequencies are tabulated and the corresponding contour fringe
plot of the system is taken for records and further reference.
BCs: All DOFs are constrained at Hanger Locations.
Tools Used: ABAQUS, HYPERVIEW.
