1. The document summarizes a study analyzing trends in hematocrit (HCT) levels and blood product usage for patients undergoing open heart surgery between July and August 2011. 2. It was found that on average patients used 2.4 units of blood, and their length of stay was 8.8 days if they received blood and 6.1 days if they did not receive blood. 3. Reducing crystalloid administration by 50% was projected to reduce units of blood per patient to 1.2 and save an estimated $887,808 per year in costs.
