Culture of Adversarialism

This presentation postulates that violence and conflict are no more natural to human beings and their society than compassion and cooperation, and that their apparent ‘naturalness’ is because they are part of a cultural construct that is prevalent in today’s world. It proposes that this view of humanity came to be put forward as part of the myth developed to justify the European conquest and colonization of the rest of the world. It analyzes its modern–day reproduction as a hegemonic imaginary, who stands to gain and lose from it, how it is propagated, and whether or not one could speak of a conspiracy.

Cultural relativism & Ethnocentrism
Cultural relativism holds that morality is determined by one's own culture, and that no culture is superior to another. It challenges the idea of universal moral truths. However, cultural relativism is problematic as it cannot criticize objectively bad practices like genocide.
While cultures do have some differing moral codes, there is also significant agreement across cultures on basic moral rules necessary for societies to function. Many apparent disagreements are due to misunderstandings rather than true conflicts.
Ethnocentrism is the bias of judging another culture through the lens of one's own culture. It prevents open-minded understanding of other ways of life. Cultural relativism teaches tolerance of differences but not an obligation to accept all cultural practices.

Marxist Literary Criticism
Marxist criticism views all aspects of society as determined by economics and class struggle. It sees culture as arising from the economic base of society and serving the interests of the ruling class by promoting ideologies that justify the status quo. A Marxist critic would analyze a text by examining how it reflects the socioeconomic conditions of its time and whether it reinforces or challenges dominant ideologies around issues like class, religion, and capitalism. The critic aims to reveal how power structures and inequalities are perpetuated through cultural works and ideologies.

Cultural Relativism
Introduction
Relativism is the idea that claims that truth is a conditioned notion that does not go behold cultural boundaries. This idea came to existence since the Greek era about 2400 years ago. I chose this topic because its cultural relativism has a wrong claim that each culture has its own equal and distinct valid modes of thought, perception as well as a choice. The truth is that moral truth is universal and objective. It is not right to maintain that man’s opinion in a given society will define what is wrong and right. This work is meant to look at the importance of multiculturalism in the whole world. This will facilitate curbing of virtues such as racism, political correctness, and postmodernism (Donnelly, 1984). It will as well do away the philosophy of social engineering that tends to show western culture as the most superior when compared with other cultures.
Cultural Relativism is a mistaken idea claiming that there are no objective standards to judge our society because each culture has its accepted practices and beliefs. It is a wrong idea because no one can reflect the intolerance of society reflecting its indigenous world overview. There is no objective truth about every person at every time. No one moral code that is worse than or better than any other. Following cultural relativism is like objecting to Hitler and Nazism, South Africa’s Apartheid, Genital mutilation in African young girls, Mayan infant sacrifices. This is because each of these practices was justified by the worldview of the society in which they were practiced. By accepting cultural relativism, we would be prevented from criticizing our cultural practices like slavery because our culture recognized them at that time. There would also be no need for, or argument for, social progress (Teson, 1984). This would deter societal development. Racism, Multiculturalism, deconstructionism, social engineering, and political correctness are the descendants of cultural relativism.
Multiculturalism
The central idea of multiculturalism is that there is no culture that has higher values than the other. Multiculturalism, which is a politicked form of cultural relativism, does not accept the idea that there are general truths, rules or norms with respect to both morals and standards (Steinberg, 2009). Enlightenment beliefs in objectivity, principles of freedom and reason and evidence that equally apply to all are time gone.
Multiculturalism dismisses the world overview of Eurocentric Western perspective that is based on the contributions of the white males that are dead. It also rejects the western civilization significance because it claims that the western traditions are mostly racism, elitism and sexism thus they cause most of the current problems (Donnelly, 1984). On the other hand, it accepts the Romantic view of nature as bei.
Grand Weaver and World Views
This document discusses the changing world views over the past 50 years and the rise of postmodernism. It argues that each decade since the 1950s has seen the loss of an important aspect of what it means to be human: innocence in the 1950s, authority in the 1960s, love in the 1970s, hope and the future in the 1980s, and the power of reason in the 1990s. Postmodernism rejects objective truth and moral values in favor of subjective interpretations. As Christians, the document says we must define truth through correspondence to reality and logical coherence, and remain in the world but not of it, following Jesus' example.

Utopophobia
When speaking of personal transformation and rebuilding the social order, one often hears the objection that this is Utopian, meaning an impossible dream. However, one of the requirements of such a transformation is precisely to have a positive vision of the future. Before beginning a building, all good architects make drawings and models to portray what they have in mind. Actors visualize their performance before going onto the stage. Successful companies develop a shared vision to which all staff members can commit themselves.

A critical review of dominant leadership styles, including representative democracy when based on adversarial approaches to elections. An alternative, non-adversarial electoral method is proposed, learned, practiced and debriefed.
Theories that Support Adversarialism
We would be hard put to find anyone who thought that this world is so perfect that it cannot improve. Most people would like a better world, a society of justice, unity and peace. However, when any proposal for the construction of such a society is posed, many people counter that it is impossible. When asked why, the most common arguments put forth have to do with the nature of man and society.
The purpose for this presentation is to refute popular beliefs by which selfishness, greed, conflict, aggression, and violence define human nature, and to show that they are no more than options that have become predominant in certain cultures, especially in the Western world that has imposed itself on today’s world. It proposes that the roots of this cultural stock are to be found in medieval Europe, which has gained control of a large part of the world through conquest, colonization and cultural hegemony throughout the past five centuries.
We will see how the arguments that justify and legitimize this culture have been built –through science, philosophy, religion, and the arts– a full-blown myth and belief system regarding the naturalness and inevitability of contest, struggle and hostility among humans, and how this myth has been institutionalized to form our modern social structures.
Cooperation theory
This section addresses some of the social dilemmas that currently affect humanity on a global scale. We will see how game theory has provided tools to study them scientifically, and how cooperation theory is looking for a way out of them.
Cooperation theory research and proposals are grouped into three major areas: strategic, institutional and motivational.
We also review some global dilemmas to understand their inner dynamics, what would have to be done to correct them, and what obstacles there are to achieving this.

Hasta fines del Siglo XIX, se creía en la posibilidad de un futuro mejor, pues predominaban conceptos de evolución social hasta un estado ideal y de la perfectibilidad del ser humano. Sin embargo, como resultado de los horrores vividos durante la primera mitad del Siglo XX, muchas personas se tornaron escépticas en cuanto al potencial humano. Releasing Culture of Mutuality from Obscurity
There are significant sources of often-invisible referents of a cultura of peace that coexist alongside, below the surface, or sometimes against the current of the predominant culture of adversarialism. A classical example is the so-called ‘private sphere’, traditionally managed by women, which is characterized by cooperation, conciliation, preservation, kindness, and compassion. It coexists with the ‘public sphere’, conventionally dominated by men, with its patterns of competition, conflict, conquest, aggression, and insensitiveness. The public sphere tends to be the most visible and outspoken, but it is the private sphere that has enabled humankind to survive the damage it has caused.
