Digital transformation & dev ops - two sides of same revolutionJason Bloomberg
Digital transformation and DevOps are closely related concepts that both involve adapting an organization's technology and culture to better serve customers in today's digital world. Digital transformation requires internal changes to focus on customers and innovation, while DevOps aims to increase business agility through cultural shifts and automation. Together, digital transformation and DevOps can help enterprises thrive by capitalizing on disruption.

This thesis examines approaches to identify small impoundments in Kansas reservoir drainages using digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from LiDAR data. Chapter 2 applies two elevation-based methods to identify additional impoundments beyond those in the National Hydrography Dataset and finds they produce more accurate surface area geometries. Chapter 3 delineates catchment areas for small impoundments within nine eastern Kansas reservoir drainages and compares erosion-related traits between impoundment catchments and direct runoff areas. The distribution and size of impoundments, as well as average catchment size, may influence downstream reservoir sediment yields. This research demonstrates methods for improving water body inventories using LiDAR data and provides insight into the role

Enterprise agility – do you really want this pain? why?Alek Kozlov
The document discusses Skype's transition to agile practices between 2010-2014. Some key points:
- Skype adopted Scrum in 2010-2012 in an effort to increase delivery speed and address organizational issues. This was led by consultants in a "top-down push" manner.
- The transition helped increase release cadence from 1.5 years to 2 months on average by 2013. However, cross-product collaboration was still challenging due to incentive structures.
- While agile adoption provided benefits, Skype still struggled with holistic delivery across teams and continuous reorganizations demotivated people. New management approaches were needed to fully realize agile's potential.
- Transitioning large organizations to agile is

When growing a startup product development you encounter major challenges: How do you scale your product development teams? How do you keep as fast and responsive as you used to be? And how do you leverage the existing knowledge? In this talk I’ll show a couple of practices and rituals based around a Kanban board which captured our whole product development efforts with about 30 participants. I’ll show the design of the Kanban board, the policies and meetings around it and the personal duties ranging from a developer to a product manager up to the CEO. I will also compare it to other approaches from the community and what our lessons learned are.

DevOps does not exist in a vacuum; it rests on a social structure and culture that are intertwined. Hierarchies within organizations, industry connections, and globalization all influence culture. At the same time, culture influences social structure and impacts its effectiveness. To complicate matters even more, the tools we use have an overarching influence. Tools can affect our behavior, how we share knowledge, and our organizational hierarchies.
Often, a particular technology is presented as a “best practice” or as the right way to solve a problem. How do we resolve the cognitive dissonance that arises when the “correct” tool is no longer suited to our current environment? As technology increasingly shapes how we work, how do we determine what technologies to adopt to help effect the changes we want?
In this webinar, Chef Software Engineer Jennifer Davis will help you to frame the choices available to you, identify the weaknesses in your environment that your current tools disguise, and be more effective and deliberate with the tools used in your organization.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
