The Cuban Revolution overthrew the authoritarian regime of Fulgencio Batista in 1959, after years of growing social and economic inequality, political corruption, and anti-American sentiment. Fidel Castro led the 26th of July Movement in a guerrilla war against Batista's forces from their base in the Sierra Maestra mountains. On January 1, 1959, Batista fled Cuba and Castro took control of the government, establishing a socialist state aligned with the Soviet Union and estranged from the United States.
