While the streaming media market is rapidly evolving
throughout the world, China is clearly leading the way in
OTT deployment. With over 738 Million internet users[1],
China heads the world. (Compare this to the United States
with fewer than 300 Million users.)[2] Internet penetration
in China is growing very quickly – from a mere 16 percent
in 2007 to over 55 percent in 2015. The explosive growth in
Internet users has subsequently spawned a tremendous
demand for OTT video. An estimated 229 Chinese people
will watch video via an OTT streaming subscription in
2018. [3] Fueled by such demand, China is putting OTT into
practice faster than any other geography.

Over-the-top (OTT) technology has emerged as a game-changer in the media and entertainment industry, transforming the way viewers consume and engage with content. OTT refers to the delivery of video, audio, and other media content over the Internet, bypassing traditional distribution channels such as cable, satellite, or terrestrial broadcasting.
A study on Over The Top Streaming services and analysis of Key Performance I...Neranjan Viduranga
More than five decades, cable televisions and satellite televisions were the only source of entertainment for the world, which combined audio and video together. But with the rapid growth of the internet and the IT industry in the 21st century, new emerging technologies were beginning to leap out from brilliant minds. Among those new emerging technologies, there were few technologies that could disrupt the television and change the foundation of broadcasting industry in to an entirely different one. “Over The Top” or more commonly known as “OTT” technology is the most disruptive emerging technology that has a great impact on television and the broadcasting industry. This “OTT” technology has been able to change the traditional way of entertaining through audio and video into a whole new experience.
In this paper, author discuss about the fundamentals of Over-the-Top services and platforms including a brief description about the history of OTT with more technical information about protocols, requirements, OTT platforms and Key Performance Indicators of OTT services. At the final part of this paper, author discuss about the results from another research done by Hyun woo Nam and Henning Schulz Rinne, which performed measurements of Key Performance Indicators of YouTube service.
