The emissions analysis conducted for the Steel Manufacturers Association reveals that U.S. electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmakers emit 78% less carbon in crude steelmaking compared to blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BOF) counterparts. The study also shows that scope 3 emissions associated with EAF steel production remain similar or lower compared to BOFs, highlighting the higher carbon footprint for slab rerollers using imported slabs. Overall, U.S. crude steel production exhibits a significantly lower carbon intensity compared to Europe due to a larger proportion of EAFs in the production process.
