2. DETAILS OFTHERESEARCH PAPER
• TITLE OF THE RESEARCH PAPER
• “A Study on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon Composites for Structural Applications.’’
• AUTHOR
• Padmayya Naik, A. O. Surendranathan, Neelkantha V. Londe Department of
Metallurgical and material Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka,
Surathkal, Karnataka, S.India. Research Scholar, N.I.E, Mysore, Karnataka, S.India.
• JOURNAL
• International Journal of Engineering Science and Technology (IJEST) 5 may 2011, Vol.
3, 3670-3675.
3. NEEDFORRESEARCH
• Carbon fiber reinforced composites:
- Increase in demand for:
structural applications
Aircraft brake disc application
- Alternative source of the materials
- Economic advantages over the conventional metallic disc
- Resistance to high temperature
Low co-efficient of thermal expansion
Very light in weight
High thermal conductivity
Stable co-efficient of friction over temperature of operation with low wear
4. INTRODUCTION
• Composites
These are the materials made from two or more constituent
materials with significantly different physical or chemical
properties, that when combined, produce a material with
characteristics different from the individual components.
6. MATERIALSUSED
• Carbon Fiber
• Coke
• Pitch
• Nylon
• In this paper author has not explained the physical properties of carbon fiber used for
manufacturing of composites
11. COMPRESSIONTEST
From graph author states that as carbon content in composite material decreases the
compression of composites also decreases
12. DENSITYTEST
Author claims that increase in the carbon fiber composition increases the density of material and its
weight is also increased
13. WEARTEST
Author explained that higher volume fraction of carbon fiber will leads to higher probability of
blunting of cracks compared to lower volume fraction of carbon fiber
14. SEM ANALYSIS
Specimen 1 Specimen 2
From photograph author claims that interfacial bonding between the carbon fibers and matrix is not
good therefore it show much less value than theoretical one
15. ORIGINALITYOFTHEPAPER
• The Previous work done by the others are available and is referred by the author very
precisely.
• The Authors took many of the findings from his own past work carried out with other co-
authors.
• The idea has been influenced by past work done by the author.
16. CLARITYOFpaper
• Paper was highly organized as the graphs and the explanation of the graph were
contradictory.
• There are no spelling mistakes, grammatical mistakes, no wrong interpretation of the
graphs in the paper.
• The paper was well written all the terms and explanations were sufficient too.
• Methodology of experiment carried out and the test results and procedure not clearly
mentioned in the paper.
17. BIBLIOGRAPHY
• Author has referred sufficient references for his research work.
• The reference cited by the author clears that most of the work of this research is done
previously by the same author.
• All the references have been cited in their work.
• The references were all original and available in the mentioned Journals.
18. TITLEANDABSTRACT
• The title of the research paper is self explanatory and it is very much suitable to the
research done by the author.
• The abstract gives us the clean idea about the research work done by author. Thus abstract
brings out the main points and key features of the paper.
• The abstract briefly defines the work done and the result outcomes .
• The keywords are sufficient for one’s understanding of the paper
19. SUMMARY
• More emphasize should be done on the graphitization temperature carried out for the preparation of
composites.
• The properties of carbon fiber used for manufacturing of composites should be explained.
• Some more work related to variation in carbon fiber content and graphitization temperature used for
manufacturing of composites should be done.
• The information regarding methods of testing and process used for manufacturing of composites
should be explained in detail.
• In SEM author has neglected the explanation of photograph of specimen 2 he should go through all
the specimens specified in this paper.
