complex, at its core, comprehension is based
on summarizing—restating content in a
succinct manner that highlights the most
crucial information.

Summarizing strategies that do not emphasize
text structure have the least powerful effect. The
problem with this approach is that it provides no
guidance as to how students might differentiate
important from unimportant information.
To be effective, a summarizing strategy should
help students discern the inherent structures in a
text.

Summarizing Protocol
Read the selection paying close attention
to structure
Use a *tool to capture the structure
from the selection
Take information from the *graphic
organizer and write a precise, concise
summary.
(When testing, use the summary criteria
to evaluate the BEST summary.)
As readers interact with the text to construct
meaning, their comprehension is facilitated when
they organize their thinking in a manner similar to
that used by the author. Readers who struggle with
text comprehension often do so because they fail to
recognize the organizational structure of what they
are reading, and they are not aware of cues that alert
them to particular text structures.

Several factors are responsible for the possible
extinction of elephants. Poachers kill elephants for their
valuable ivory, and growing communities encroach on the
elephants’ habitat. Conservationists want to stop the sale
