A credit card allows cardholders to pay merchants for goods and services with the promise to repay the card issuer. The card issuer creates a revolving line of credit that the cardholder can use to make purchases or get cash advances. Credit cards differ from charge cards in that they allow ongoing balances subject to interest charges rather than requiring full repayment each month. Credit cards also differ in that a third party pays merchants and is reimbursed by the cardholder.
