From passively accepting problems to
becoming a real innovator: what does it take
for educators to cross this bridge?

Where do we want to get to?
Schools have to face innumerous problems on a daily basis, both due to internal
(students’ discipline) and external (students’ families) issues. These problems frequently
have the potential to harm the school environment, relationships, and, eventually,
learning. If we want to have schools where learning opportunities are pushed to the
extreme, all the different actors that are part of the school community (students,
teachers, administrators, other staff, parents, and others) need to act together, feeling
responsible for helping to solve the schools' problems, need to see themselves as problem
solvers and need to look at innovation as an essential ingredient in school culture. At the
end of this workshops, I am hoping you will understand how to go about making this
scenario become a reality ;)

What does it take?
Checklist for the creation of a culture of innovation:
( ) List your real problems - try to create consensus and prioritize
( ) Create a case for change - mobilize all stakeholders
( ) Create a shared vision
( ) Create a macro-roadmap for transformation with essential elements
( ) Find people who can really help you in the creation of solutions
( ) Decide on a good disciplined methodology to use
( ) Make sure you have everything you need (infrastructure, buy-in, skills)
( ) Prototype, make mistakes, make corrections / a new version, try again…

Creating Innovation in Schools

  • 1. From passively accepting problems to becoming a real innovator: what does it take for educators to cross this bridge? Rafael Parente
  • 2. Where do we want to get to? Schools have to face innumerous problems on a daily basis, both due to internal (students’ discipline) and external (students’ families) issues. These problems frequently have the potential to harm the school environment, relationships, and, eventually, learning. If we want to have schools where learning opportunities are pushed to the extreme, all the different actors that are part of the school community (students, teachers, administrators, other staff, parents, and others) need to act together, feeling responsible for helping to solve the schools' problems, need to see themselves as problem solvers and need to look at innovation as an essential ingredient in school culture. At the end of this workshops, I am hoping you will understand how to go about making this scenario become a reality ;)
  • 3. What is innovation? Can teachers be innovators? Should teachers be innovators? Why do we need to implement a culture of innovation in our schools? What does it take?
  • 4.
