Presentation on health and risk communication best-practices from Wayne County, Michigan. Presentation a the PIO Summit at Wayne State University sponsored by DTE.
The document discusses patient feedback and engagement for healthcare in the 21st century. It notes that while the web allows everyone to have a voice, having a voice does not mean being heard or having a conversation. Approximately half of the feedback on Patient Opinion is positive, but some patients have negative experiences. Some feedback on the site has led to changes in local healthcare services. The document also provides statistics on activity and usage of the Patient Opinion website, which allows patients to provide feedback on healthcare services. It aims to make services better through incentives for responsiveness and tools to support change based on patient feedback.
The document discusses social media basics and Rotary's presence and strategy regarding social media. It provides an overview of popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. It emphasizes that social media is about having conversations and recommends listening first before communicating. The goal is not to control conversations but to add value by sharing expertise, projects, and building trust and communities. Rotary's social media strategy is to listen and learn, communicate to new audiences, and better connect members in the 21st century.
Social media provides new opportunities for fundraising but also challenges traditional major gift strategies. While personal relationships remain primary, social media can help start dialogues with potential major donors, especially younger "wired wealthy" donors who expect online options. Non-profits should create customized online experiences for these donors but start slowly and focus on quality over quantity of engagement. Social media is not a game-changer on its own but can advance relationships when used as a tool to deepen understanding and meaning before explicitly asking for money.
This document summarizes data from a community needs assessment of 14 communities in Western Wayne County. It finds that since 2000, median income has fallen 27%, unemployment has risen to 16%, and poverty rates have increased. Many families face obstacles like a lack of financial resources, parental stress, unstable housing, poor performing school systems, lack of transportation and access to services. To address these challenges, service delivery needs flexible family support, advocacy to access resources, and cross-system collaboration. Long-term solutions require public policy and advocacy to reduce barriers facing low-income families.
Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis: Poverty - Des McCafferty and Eileen Hum...The Royal Irish Academy
Royal Irish Academy Conference: Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis
23 April, 2013, Academy House
The on-going crisis and associated responses to it (political, governance, popular etc.) provides an entry point for a wide-ranging exploration of spatial justice as a theoretical construct and a departure point for empirical analysis. Discourses of justice, equality and fairness remain central to a range of interconnected debates as Ireland seeks to recover from the interrelated collapses of the banking system and property markets and the knock on effects through the rest of society and the economy. Scale is an important dimension in framing and constructing popular discourses concerning issues of justice, e.g. the role of EU institutions in shaping Ireland’s treatment of banking debt or the impact of national budgetary measures on particular places. The focus of this conference is on understanding these spatially connected processes, how they are functioning at different scales, their impact on particular or specific places and spaces, as they give rise to new or evolving social and economic geographies.

This document discusses strategies for delivering disaster education. It provides perspectives from four Extension experts on using various media like websites, YouTube, social media, and traditional media to share information. Content should be repurposed across multiple platforms and information should be repeated often. Building relationships with local emergency managers and collaborating with partner organizations is also recommended. Extension can help with communications, updating emergency plans, and reaching underserved groups. Overall, the document advocates for an interdisciplinary approach using communicators, technologists, and consistent messaging to deliver disaster education.

2023 OHIO YAB Cuyahoga County PresentationLisa Dickson
This document discusses youth concerns about proposed solutions to challenges in Cuyahoga County's out-of-home care system. Youth question whether spending $27,000 on keycards or assigning a sheriff's deputy will truly safeguard youth. They also worry proposed placements may not have adequate services or oversight. Youth propose alternative solutions like trauma-informed training and life skills programs. Creating videos about fostering and adoption could help recruitment where increasing wages alone may not.
