DICAPRIO TAKES A STAND ON
CLIMATE CHANGE
STAFFWRITER, COURTNEY BAREFOOT
Leonardo DiCaprio is best known for his roles on
screen from The Titanic to The Reverent his acting has
touched our hearts for years but now he is pulling on our
heart strings in another way, by talking about the
environment.
DiCaprio, a United Nations Messenger of Peace
took the stage on Earth Day to address the pressing issue of climate change. At the landmark
Paris agreement a record-breaking 175 countries signed to make an effort to reduce their impact
on greenhouse gas emissions.
He said that when he first learned about climate change that it “absolutely terrified him”,
which is no surprise as only months prior during his Oscar speech DiCaprio mentions how
important the environment is to him “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It’s the
most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop
procrastinating.”
DiCaprio’s UN speech continues with the same urgency “An upheaval, a massive change
is required right now, one that leads to a new collective conscience,” he said “Our planet cannot
be saved unless we leave fossil fuels in the ground, where they belong.”
DiCaprio’s words must have had an impact on the world’s leaders as they believe the
original 2020 deadline will be blown out of the water; many suspect it could be enacted as soon
Barefoot 10
as soon as the end of 2016. Those present and siging at the New York convention include John
Kerry and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, we will continue to follow the efforts that are a result
of this agreement.

REMEMBERING CHERNOBYL
STAFFWRITER, COURTNEY BAREFOOT
Tuesday marks the thirty year anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster in Pripyat in the then
Soviet Union. On April 26, 1986 a
reactor at Chernobyl nuclear power
station exploded during routing
testing causing a fire that continued
for ten days and radioactive levels
300 times greater than those at
Hiroshima. Thirty years later and the
devastation can be visibly seen, with a thirty kilometer range of devastation with twenty-five
times the ambient radiation.
The World Health Organization reports increases in persons suffering from cancers such
as thyroid and leukemia for those who were young at the time of the accident. They expect that
the impact of Chernobyl will be seen for many years to come.
Today the area remains a ghost town except for the wildlife that is still suffering from the
explosion. Many of the organisms that
are present suffer from genetic
damage, smaller brains, tumors and
sterilization as a result of the high
radiation.
Barefoot 12
The impact extends much larger than the immediate areas, over five million people living
in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine are living in areas with higher than recommended radiation
levels. It is estimated that some areas will not be radiation free for at least 24,000 years.
Countries still mourn over the devastation to the towns and wildlife and can only leave it
up to time to heal the land.

Do you Bleed? Well You’ll Want Too.
A Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
One of the most anticipated films of the summer was
Batman v Superman, with its early summer release date and
2 hour and 33 minute run time it was guaranteed to bring the
crowds, which it did with 170.1 million dollar income for its
opening weekend. While Warner Brothers had full pockets it
left fans wanting more.
The whole film could be described as a whole bunch
of movie trailers crammed together with some angsty scenes
of Ben Affleck shoved between. Receiving only a 28% on
Rotten Tomatoes, and 2/5 on The Guardian, the film only
profited based on name recognition rather than any attempt at a genuinely well written script.
Fans could tell that a few scenes were just to set up future films, but rather than getting
people excited for the next installment, it felt like a new plot point to follow. This happens more
than one time, and each new plot point is never mentioned again.
One of the most criticized components of the films was the highly anticipated fight
between Batman and Superman. While the fight continued for a large chunk of the second half of
the film, it came to an abrupt stop when Superman helplessly whispered “Martha”. Batman
stopped fighting and immediately joined sides with Superman because they shared a common
name between mothers. The whole interaction seemed over-scripted and an ingenuine
interaction.
Barefoot 16
As a fan of the Superhero genre, I would recommend this film so you can know the
backstory for the next few films to come, and for the ending fight scene, but if you are looking
for a well-thought out film with fantastic writing and a superb script you better wait for
something else.

  • 9. Barefoot 9 DICAPRIO TAKES A STAND ON CLIMATE CHANGE STAFFWRITER, COURTNEY BAREFOOT Leonardo DiCaprio is best known for his roles on screen from The Titanic to The Reverent his acting has touched our hearts for years but now he is pulling on our heart strings in another way, by talking about the environment. DiCaprio, a United Nations Messenger of Peace took the stage on Earth Day to address the pressing issue of climate change. At the landmark Paris agreement a record-breaking 175 countries signed to make an effort to reduce their impact on greenhouse gas emissions. He said that when he first learned about climate change that it “absolutely terrified him”, which is no surprise as only months prior during his Oscar speech DiCaprio mentions how important the environment is to him “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It’s the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.” DiCaprio’s UN speech continues with the same urgency “An upheaval, a massive change is required right now, one that leads to a new collective conscience,” he said “Our planet cannot be saved unless we leave fossil fuels in the ground, where they belong.” DiCaprio’s words must have had an impact on the world’s leaders as they believe the original 2020 deadline will be blown out of the water; many suspect it could be enacted as soon

  • 11. Barefoot 11 REMEMBERING CHERNOBYL STAFFWRITER, COURTNEY BAREFOOT Tuesday marks the thirty year anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster in Pripyat in the then Soviet Union. On April 26, 1986 a reactor at Chernobyl nuclear power station exploded during routing testing causing a fire that continued for ten days and radioactive levels 300 times greater than those at Hiroshima. Thirty years later and the devastation can be visibly seen, with a thirty kilometer range of devastation with twenty-five times the ambient radiation. The World Health Organization reports increases in persons suffering from cancers such as thyroid and leukemia for those who were young at the time of the accident. They expect that the impact of Chernobyl will be seen for many years to come. Today the area remains a ghost town except for the wildlife that is still suffering from the explosion. Many of the organisms that are present suffer from genetic damage, smaller brains, tumors and sterilization as a result of the high radiation.
  • 12. Barefoot 12 The impact extends much larger than the immediate areas, over five million people living in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine are living in areas with higher than recommended radiation levels. It is estimated that some areas will not be radiation free for at least 24,000 years. Countries still mourn over the devastation to the towns and wildlife and can only leave it up to time to heal the land.

  • 15. Barefoot 15 Do you Bleed? Well You’ll Want Too. A Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice One of the most anticipated films of the summer was Batman v Superman, with its early summer release date and 2 hour and 33 minute run time it was guaranteed to bring the crowds, which it did with 170.1 million dollar income for its opening weekend. While Warner Brothers had full pockets it left fans wanting more. The whole film could be described as a whole bunch of movie trailers crammed together with some angsty scenes of Ben Affleck shoved between. Receiving only a 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 2/5 on The Guardian, the film only profited based on name recognition rather than any attempt at a genuinely well written script. Fans could tell that a few scenes were just to set up future films, but rather than getting people excited for the next installment, it felt like a new plot point to follow. This happens more than one time, and each new plot point is never mentioned again. One of the most criticized components of the films was the highly anticipated fight between Batman and Superman. While the fight continued for a large chunk of the second half of the film, it came to an abrupt stop when Superman helplessly whispered “Martha”. Batman stopped fighting and immediately joined sides with Superman because they shared a common name between mothers. The whole interaction seemed over-scripted and an ingenuine interaction.
  • 16. Barefoot 16 As a fan of the Superhero genre, I would recommend this film so you can know the backstory for the next few films to come, and for the ending fight scene, but if you are looking for a well-thought out film with fantastic writing and a superb script you better wait for something else.
