2. Legal and Ethical Research
There are many different legal issues to consider within media broadcasting including:
● Copyright
● Defamation
● Discrimination
● Data Protection Act
● and Ethical Issues
We had to take this into consideration when recording our news bulletin so we would not be breaking the
law. Even though we researched news stories from local newspapers and used them in our broadcast this
is not a form of copyright as we only took basic information and scripted it ourselves. All the news stories
which we included in our broadcast contained correct information and therefore there was no defamation
within our broadcast as there was no false statements.
In our broadcast we have also used copyright free music material so that copyright was not an issue.
There were no ethical issues within our broadcast as there was no exploitation or offensive material, as our
radio show is a daytime show there was no explicit material(watershed) included.
We have not discriminated against anyone on the grounds of sex, age, disability or ethnic origin within our
broadcast as our news stories are purely news from the local area.
We have not used any confidential data within our broadcast.
3. Contacting Participants and
Questioning
The participants we decided to contact were The British Heart Foundation. Before we went to question
them, we contacted them via telephone and asked them if we could ask them a few questions about
the charity and the work they do. When they agreed we went down to the shop and had a prepared set
of questions we were going to ask. The questions we had prepared were:
1. How long have you worked for the charity for?
2. Why did you decide to work for this charity?
3. When was the foundation first set up?
4. How does the charity use our contributions?
5. What outcomes has this charity seen through its work?
6. How much does it mean for you to receive as many contributions as you do?
7. Have you got anything you’d like to ask the members of the public?
We decided on these questions because they were about the charity and the work they do but also
because we wanted to know what donations meant to the charity.
