HOW ARE THOUGHTS MADE?
Thinking about thinking?
▪ Does the physical brain limit our thinking about thinking
▪ Can we think without words, with images, sounds or even smells
▪ When conscious, can we stop ourselves thinking
▪ Are dreams past thoughts replayed, or unconscious thinking
▪ Can we take control of how a thought is formed
▪ As adults, are our thoughts limited by our earlier development
▪ Thinking is holistic, we have no sense of which parts of our brain
are being used
What is the Mind?
A construct of thinking?
▪ Self awareness, sense of identity and humanity
▪ Integration of perceiving, analyzing, planning, acting
▪ Placing ourselves in the present, between past and future
▪ Ideas and Imagination
▪ Personality
▪ Self determination, setting our own destiny
▪ Beliefs, our position in the Universe
What are our thoughts?
▪ Reuse of past perceptions and thoughts, stored as memories
▪ Memories and current perceptions manipulated using language
▪ Learning redeployed
▪ Applied self awareness
▪ Orchestrated by, and part of, consciousness
▪ Utilise verbal, numerical, spatial, etc reasoning, and decision
making
▪ Building blocks of imagination, planning and self determination
What makes our thoughts?
▪ A holistic function of the brain orchestrated by the cerebral/neo cortex
▪ integrates other functions, relies on wakefulness and alertness mediated by the thalamus and brain
stem
▪ prefrontal cortex a core component
▪ The content of consciousness and focus of attention built upon
▪ perceptions from visual and auditory cortex
▪ assisted by language using Broca’s and Wernicke’s area
▪ declarative memories of learning & experience, using the hippocampus and neocortex
▪ joined up analysis of current perceptions
▪ synthesis of ideas, and of composite ideas as plans
▪ brain regions in neocortex giving capacity for spatial & numeric reasoning
▪ perceptions arising from sensory input as interpreted by the thalamus
▪ the inbuilt mental model of the body and its interaction with self awareness
▪ input from the limbic system including amygdala, handling emotions and related memories
▪ Hallucinations and malfunctions due to drugs, injury or illness
Course Learning
▪ This course provides a method –
bottom up learning about the
brain and central nervous system
▪ Week 10 illuminated
developments in ideas on how
the brain’s anatomy relates to
higher functions such as
language
▪ Personal research provided some
additional ideas on functions not
addressed by the course such as
the mechanism of thought
