This document provides the course plan for a Quantitative Methods course taught at Gyan Ganga Institute of Technology & Management.
The course aims to introduce students to basic statistical techniques for business decision making. It covers topics like descriptive statistics, probability, inferential statistics, regression, correlation, and the use of statistical software.
The course is designed to help students understand and apply statistical concepts to business problems. It will use methods like lectures, case discussions, student presentations and assignments to teach topics over 38 sessions. Student performance will be evaluated through class participation, assignments, quizzes and tests.
This is a PowerPoint presentation for the third and fourth phases of the ASSURE model, the phase of selecting strategies, technology, media and materials and also the phase of utilizing technology, media and materials.
It is remarkable how often academic staff discovers students’ weaknesses in expressing their thoughts either in a written, or an oral context, as well as in team working. The above skills are considered essential for their successful performance during their studies, which in turn requires writing technical reports, presenting their work, or participating in group projects, laboratory work, field work, etc. In this respect, we designed and conducted a two-academic year study in 2009-10 and 2010-11, during an engineering course. The results indicate that students self-reported an initial high level of weaknesses for both communication skills (writing and speaking), while a higher confidence for team-working skills. This effort highlighted that there is a large improvement potential for both communication skills and a lower potential for team-working skills. Based on the above results and in conjunction with other difficulties, such as: (a) the lack of awareness in the academic community for such skills in a traditionally-organised university (i.e. in Greece), (b) the inability to redesign all courses, currently relying on a content-based organised curriculum, on a competency base, and (c) the international literature which highlights specific generic skills of engineering students as essential during their studies and future career, Technical University of Crete organised short training workshops, based on experiential learning methods, during the academic year 2012-13. The aim of these workshops was the enhancement of the three aforementioned skills (writing, speaking, team-working) of the participating volunteers-students from all university departments. This paper justifies this innovative initiative and presents the analytical results from the contribution of the short training workshops organised in Technical University of Crete.

September 2016 Semester
Module Leaders: Kuldeep Pradhan
Module Lecturers:
Nooreen Jafferkhan
Kuldeep Pradhan
Aims:
The aim of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to develop techniques for data gathering and
storage, an understanding of the tools available to create and present useful information, in order to
make business decisions
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit a learner will:
LO1 Be able to use a variety of sources for the collection of data, both primary and secondary
LO2 Understand a range of techniques to analyse data effectively for business purposes
LO3 Be able to produce information in appropriate formats for decision making in an organisational context
LO4 Be able to use software-generated information to make decisions in an organisation.
Delivery:
This unit will be delivered through a combination of different methods that mainly include formal lectures (1 hour) and seminars (2hours). The lecture sessions will normally introduce the topics, and will be largely tutor-led. Seminars are designed to allow for in-depth discussion on the lecture topic, and provides opportunities for students to understand in more detail the linkages between the lecture content and the assessment for the module. During seminars, several methods and techniques that can be applied may include question and answer, group discussions and short presentations based for example on scenarios, video-clips and case study material.
Assessment:
The assessment for this module will take the form of an “Individual Assignment” which will be scenario based over a number of tasks. The tasks presented will cover learning Outcomes (LO1 – LO4), and will be designed to evaluate students’ understanding of the module content.
A completed assignment must provide evidence reflecting that students have understood and can use the information they have studied on the course. The evidence should meet all the assessment criteria and presented in a manner that helps students to receive at least a PASS grade, in order to succeed in the Module.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Â
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

2. Course Description and Overall Goal
We know that a sound knowledge of statistical techniques is necessary for the study of modern business and economics; this
course will provide a basic introduction to statistical methods for policy analysts. The course will provide an introductory foundation
in statistical inference, enabling the student to become a competent producer of basic statistical research. In addition the skills
acquired will enable the student to become a somewhat more sophisticated consumer of more advanced research methodologies.
The emphasis is on practical applications and real-world problem solving. Areas covered include: descriptive statistics, probability,
inferential statistics, regression and correlation, and the use of a statistical software package.
Learning Objectives
The objective of the course is to make the students familiar with some basic statistical and linear programming techniques. The
main focus, however, is in their applications in business decision-making.
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
• To understand the benefits of Quantitative Methods.
• to understand what the data is telling us
• To take decision based on central tendencies
.
• To understand the distribution of data with pictures and equations.
3. • .
• To understand the Probability Experiments and able to take decision logically and rationally with the help of probability.
• To use statistical software, such as Microsoft® Excel, to solve business and economic problems
• Know various statistical topics, such as frequency distribution, elementary probability theory including discrete and
continuous probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis.
• To understand the concept of using a sample statistic to estimate a population parameter. Criteria for choosing a
good method.
•
This course provides students with the insight into the services, pricing, techniques, goals and objectives, management
styles, internal problems and risks of financial institutions, and the markets in which they operate. The course
accomplishes this insight by (i) profiling the financial, operating, and organizational characteristics of each type of
financial institution, and (ii) examining the services offered by these firms to the public.
4. Learning Methodology
The class will consist of a combination of case discussions, class discussions, student’s presentations and lectures. Student’s
preparation of assigned material and involvement in class discussion is essential for the success of the course and class
participation will count towards the final grade. Generally a student centered learning methodology will be used. The specific
activities will involve:
• Class discussion on the theoretical aspects of the subject and related the concept in real life situations
• Solving numerical questions
• Daily quiz on the topic covered in the last session.
