Corynebacteria includes pathogenic species like C. diphtheriae and commensal diphtheroids found on skin and mucous membranes. C. diphtheriae is characterized by long, gram-positive bacilli with metachromatic granules, identifiable via Nissl or methylene blue stains, and can be differentiated mainly through blood tellurite agar. Diphtheroids are non-motile, non-capsulated gram-positive rods that grow on ordinary media and exhibit a distinctive palisade arrangement.
