“Arctic Monkeys Meltdown”
Having not produced an album since 2011 and with each member doing their own thing Indie
investigates what is going on with them right now.

Arctic Monkeys are 4 ordinary lads Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and Matt Helders from
High Green, a suburb of Sheffield; they went from having nothing, to having it all. They all knew each
other from school and all enjoyed doing music together. They started off by doing local gigs round
there area, and then more and more people started noticing them, they would make demos CDs and
passed them out for free to the public, also posting things online about themselves so they get
noticed. By 2005 the Arctic Monkeys was well known around the Northern England. Therefore the
word got out about how good they was so Dominos records signed them and made them very big
worldwide.

The Arctic Monkeys became one of the biggest bands, with hits such as “I bet you look good on the
dance floor”, 2005; released debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, 2006;
released Favourite Worst Nightmare, 2007. These hit singles got the band very popular and well
known worldwide; after that the band kept producing some top hits and becoming very big around
the world. The band become famous very rapidly as their top hits became the public’s ears and eyes.
Everyone was buying there singles, and albums and before they knew it they was touring around the
world doing concerts, singings and becoming well known to everyone.

A lot of their reputation seemed to come from their stage presence and ability to deliver amazing
concerts which was an area Indie was keen to investigate. According to one fan, Jack Coggins “The
atmosphere was immense, I was right at the front of the venue against the barrier, the entire crowd
was bouncing and swaying and the fact my ribs were being shattered against the barrier only added
to the amazement. I’ve seen them 3 times now and every time they’re completely idyllic. They are
by far the world’s greatest live band. Some of the things Alex would notice and say on stage were
brilliant; he gives off a vibe of being so sound.”

But it seems that it wasn’t just their songs that connected with the audience, it was also their
relaxed attitude to the law as well. When we spoke to Kayleigh Brabander about her experience of
the gig she stated it was “Absolutely perfect, the venue was packed out and everyone was up on
their feet singing along. No one had a care in the world, pints were flying and everyone was smoking
in the smoke-free venue. The enjoyment of the gig comes way before the law.”

This concept of seemingly not taking themselves too seriously seems to be echoed at times through
the titles of some of the song they write, but again this seems to fit with their fans. But as one fan
Jack Coggins told us you can see the depth of music knowledge they have with these titles. He told
us his favourite sing is “perhaps not well known compared to other but it definitely has to be “Who
the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys”. The song was never properly released but as it was a very early song I
believe it portrays their original style and roots. The lyrics are absolute genius, Alex Turner is a god.
My favourite line in the song is “Not that bad to start with, I’m not angry. I’m just disappointed.” It
flows so well with the tune and the classic solo with true 60’s routes.”

Other artists such as Jake Bugg have adopted a similar style to the Arctic Monkeys showing how
influential they have been on the music scene despite not producing any new material for the last
two years. Yet this is something which has not put the fans off. When asked if he would see them
again, Jack Coggins replied “Yes definitely, I’m actually waiting for their next UK tour, as soon as it’s
announced I’m getting tickets. They always save the Liverpool show till last, they say because it’s the
best. At V-Festival me and a friend guessed every song they were about to play by judging the chords
and tuning of the guitars. This was possible as we both spend hours perfecting every song. However
though, Alex Turner pointed and said “Thank you” to us at one point as we shouted out the correct
song title while other people were screaming nonsense.”

Arctic Monkeys can be seen on tour in the UK next year.
