INTRODUCTION
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is defined as a disease state characterized
by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow obstruction.
• There is a lack of studies on the association of COPD with disorders of serum sodium and
potassium. Hypokalemia may be a complication of AECOPD due to decreased nutritional
intake in acute illness or increased renal loss, especially in case of concomitant
decompensated heart failure.
• Reduced general state of health in acute illness such as acute exacerbation of COPD
might lead to impairment of thirst sensation for example due to fever, confusion or
inflammation. Furthermore, patients might suffer from weakness or even immobility
limiting their free access to water even with intact thirst sensation. Both conditions
might increase the risk for hypernatremia in these patients.
• This study aims at evaluating serum electrolyte levels in acute exacerbation of COPD.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
• To establish relationship between Acute Exacerbation of COPD and
Electrolyte Imbalance
• Prognosis of hyponatremia/hypernatremia and
hypokalemia/hyperkalemia with acute exacerbation of COPD
MATERIALS AND METHODS
• Type of Study: A cross sectional observational study
• Period of Study: July 2022 to August 2023
• Place of Study: Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Hospital, Jaipur
• SAMPLE SIZE. : All patient admitted in hospital during above period
meeting the inclusion criterion
INCLUSION CRITERION
• All cases of COPD patients presenting to outpatient department or
emergency with acute exacerbation.
• Age of patient between 18 -65 yrs of age
EXCLUSION CRITERION
• 1. COPD patients admitted for causes other than COPD exacerbation
• 2. COPD patients requiring mechanical ventilation
• 3. Patients with pre-existing renal, hepatic, endocrinal or cardiac
illness.
• 4. All patients not willing to give consent
METHODOLOGY
• Patients admitted under General Medicine of Mahatma Gandhi
Medical College and Hospital, will undergo a detailed medical history
and a thorough physical examination
• All routine blood parameters including, complete blood count, serum
electrolytes , erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) ,C reactive protein
(CRP),renal function test, liver function test, ABG , chest xray .
• COPD diagnosis will be confirmed by clinical history and
investigations, spirometry if and when required .
