Global trade is dependent 80% on sea route than air route, simply for the fact that air route is far more expensive and is used only in case of light weight cargo, perishable cargo, and priority shipments or in other conditions where shipping would not be possible.
Shipping trade is characterized by shipping companies who own vessels and specialize in the transportation of certain types of cargo like General Cargo, Containerized cargo, bulk commodities carriers, oil tankers, gas tankers, OD cargo carriers, etc.
As the business processes and business entities in international trade are becoming more complex, it is becoming increasingly difficult to manage all of the activities on one’s own. Logistics service providers are an important factor in the business success of companies engaged in trade activities at national and international level. Logistics intermediaries come in different forms and under different names, but they all have the same goal: to provide help to companies in the transportation, storage, shipment and distribution of goods from the seller to the buyer or the final consumer.

Containerization refers to the use of standard intermodal containers in freight transport. It has led to vast improvements in port efficiency and lower shipping costs. The key developments were the standardization of container sizes and specifications in the 1960s and the use of container ships, trains, trucks and ports. The top five container ports globally are Shanghai, Singapore, Shenzhen, Ningbo-Zhoushan and Hong Kong. The main advantages of containerization are standardized containers that can be transported anywhere by multiple modes, flexibility, lower costs, and increased speed of transport. Potential requirements for hub ports include location on major shipping routes and access to large hinterlands via multiple transport modes.

It defines logistics and outlines the contents to be covered, including port organisations, the cruise industry, criteria for choosing base ports, and interest groups at the port. It also provides examples of port information from Cruise Europe and analyses attractors highlighted in port advertisements. The largest base ports and cruise ships are identified. Services provided at ports include technical ship assistance, passenger welcoming, on-land transport, tourist activities, and other suppliers. Stakeholders include port organisations, service providers, shipping companies, and port authorities.
The document discusses coastal shipping in India, noting that it currently accounts for only 7% of domestic cargo transport despite India having a long coastline and many ports, and identifies some challenges that have curbed its growth such as regulatory issues, taxation of coastal vessels, and a limited number of coastal shipping operators. It also explains that coastal shipping needs support from road and rail transport to effectively move cargo between factories/warehouses and ports.

Conference overview
The cold chain market in Asia is set to explode in the short and medium
term with 40-50% growth rates over the next two years, due to demand
for perishable goods, increasing wealth distribution and the development
of e-commerce.
Rising middle class incomes in Asia result in increasing demand and are
providing new opportunities for the cold chain logistics sector, covering all
stages between production and consumption.
However there is a big ‘but’. At least 30 percent of temperature sensitive
cargoes are being wasted and have to be destroyed due to insufficient
infrastructure, differences in culture and communication problems.
Due to poor handling in the process of transportation, storage and
retailing, losses in China alone are estimated to be in the region of
RMB100 billion (USD16 billion).
There is a critical need for a better dialogue between the logistics sector
and perishable producers, exporters and importers. Without greater open-
mindedness and mutual trust on both sides this will not work: customers
need more effective and reliable solutions and the logistics sector needs to
be able to maintain and create better value. How can this be achieved?
For a start food safety needs to be improved and the creation of world-
class delivery standards already established in Europe, the US and some
other Asia countries, such as Japan, will need to be adopted across Asia.
A new forum
Running concurrently with the Asia Fruit Logistica Exhibition, this brand new
one-day event will focus on regional perishable supply chain issues in Asia.
Cool Logistics has become an internationally recognized platform for
connecting perishable logistics and cold chain experts with producers and
shippers of commodities that require temperature control.
Designed as a regional event to complement Cool Logistics Global in
Europe and other biennial regional events such as Cool Logistics Africa
and Cool Logistics Americas, Cool Logistics Asia will be held in Hong
Kong, on the doorstep of the world’s largest potential cold chain market.
