General Conventions of Indie Rock Music Videos Mise-en-scene Camerawork Editing & Sound • Costume – usually consists of generic and fashionable clothing, Indie Rock artists sometimes make use of vintage clothing • Location – if performance video, may include clips from concerts etc. • Makeup – • Props – may include instruments • Setting – often filmed in a studio, or at a set that resembles a house, or small venue • Fast camera movements, such as panning, and hand-held movements are used to fit the beat of the song • Close ups are often used to portray an emotion • Usually feature jump cuts, often timed on the beat of the song • Long edits can be used to make the artist seem dominant over their fans. • Short edits can also be used to portray a sense of confusion and/or anger – common themes of Rock and its Sub-genres
- 3. What is Indie Rock? • Indie Rock is a genre of Alternative Rock that immerged in the US and UK in the 1980s. • Indie Rock is described as having a balance of cheerful Pop and the loud expressiveness of Rock. • Music videos for Indie Rock come in two forms: Performance and Narrative (sometimes both).
- 4. Performance Weezer – Say it Ain’t So A performance video contains clips that are mainly focused on the band and/or artist. Performance videos contain no narrative and do not require a story to be followed. An example of this is the video for “Say it ain’t so” by Weezer. This video features the band performing their song in a single room, with an occasional clip of the band hanging out. This video itself has no meaning, and would not be able to exist without the song.
- 5. Narrative Amber Run – I Found A narrative video contains a visual story that is easy to follow that may link directly to the song and its lyrics. Contains no lip- synchronising An example of a narrative video would be “I Found” by Amber Run. This video is part one of a two part narrative (with part two being “Pilot”) this video follows the narrative of two men kidnapping a woman from her home and holding her at ransom. However throughout the video, we see the younger of the two falling in love with the woman and realising what they are doing is wrong. The younger man then releases the girl. Part one ends with the older man laying on the ground after being drugged with chloroform. This video would be able to standalone from the song as there is a clear storyline that would provide enough interest to spike the audience’s attention.
- 6. Mixture The Kooks - Naive A mixture video contains clips that are both narrative and performance. This can be done in several ways. In the video for “Naive” by The Kooks, the lead singer is seen walking around a location lip-synching the words to the song, however there is a hint at a narrative that is consistent throughout the video. However, in the example of “Tighten Up” by The Black Keys the divide between narrative and performance is obvious Both of these videos would potentially be able to stand alone, however in some situations, more of a narrative may be required to keep the audience interested.
